A self made and self taught man. At his father's death he was thrown
upon the world penniless, with a widowed mother and sister depending upon him
for their support. By hard 1abor he acquired means to embark in business in
the fur trade on his own account, and is now the proprietor of a large and
flourishing factory; in addition to which, he is the proprietor of the splendid
line of stages running to and from Fulton Ferry and East Brooklyn.
