GHOST NOT YET FOUND _________________________ But Some of The Marines Are Certainly Justifying Their Ancient Reputation.

The Talk of the supposed ghost of Billy HUNT, which a large number of the marines on Cob Dock, in the Navy Yard, are stoutly maintaining they have sen during the past few days, has to-day developed into an interesting situation. The majority of the marines were surprised and considerably irritated that the affair has become public property, and to-day many of them are telling different tales of their experiences. This morning at the yard a score of persons, including some newspaper men, were at Cob Dock trying to get some clew to the mysterious ghost affair, and many asked permission to spend the night on the dock to find out something at first hand. This permission , of course, could not be granted. One corporal declared this morning that he had experienced the same sensations and seen the same visions that the several other young men had felt and seen. He added that he had felt a peculiar tugging at his coat tail, and some unseen had were pulling him. One of the older sergeants was indignant this morning because so much talk had been made about the matter. He acknowledged that he had heard the assertions of the different corporals and marines, but he called it all a fake. "If there was anything it was a trick," he said, "which was worked up by some of the fellows to frighten the guards. No one here is foolish enough to believe in ghosts." A few, however, are foolish enough to, and some of them are willing to take an oath that their stories are true. A corporal said that the theory of someone throwing stones at the guard house would account for the noise, but not the strange figure. The marines are certainly divided in sentiment as to the likelihood of the dock being a resort for ghosts. Back to GHOSTS Main Back to CEMETERY INDEX Back to BROOKLYN Page Main
