20 January 1929 Auto Mishaps Seeking outdoor relief from the heat last night, seven children were injured by automobiles in the borough. Most of the accidents occurred near the homes of the injured. A young woman was also injured when a taxi in which she was riding crashed with a private car. Boy Hurt at Play Henry WEISSLER, 5, 324 East Fifty-second street, while playing in a driveway between 314 and 320 East Fifty-second street, was struck by an automobile driven by David LEADERMAN, of 5207 Church avenue. The boy was taken to Brownsville and East New York Hospital suffering from internal injuries. Taxi and Auto Crash Frances PAPPAMERA, 18, 8142 Bay Sixteenth street, was removed to Coney Island Hospital suffering a fracture of the left leg and fractured jaw, which she sustained while riding as a passenger in a taxicab driven by Harry GOSSITEG, of 256 Berriman street, at Nineteenth avenue and Eighty-first street. The cab collided with an automobile driven by John MONDA of 418 Sixty-ninth street. Girl Hit at Crossing Jane HERMANN, 7, 572 Manhattan avenue, while crossing the roadway at Driggs avenue near Graham, was struck by an automobile truck driven by Edward KLEIN, of 196 Middle street. The young girl went home after treatment for abrasions of the body. Auto Runs Down Girl Shirley GORDON, 8, 160 Nelson street, while crossing the street at Lee avenue near Nelson street, was struck by an automobile driven by Virginia LARIO of 245 West 104th street, Manhattan. The girl was removed to Beth Moses Hospital suffering a possible fracture of the skull and lacerations. Boy is Injured Charles LANTZ, 11, 2035 East Sixty-fifth street, while crossing the street in front of his home, was struck by an automobile driven by Lansing LOCKWOOD of 420 Twenty-first street. He was treated for lacerations and abrasions. Child’s Skull Fractured Joseph Di GIACONIO, 9, 549 Eightieth street, while playing in the roadway on Sixth avenue near Eighty-sixth street, was struck by an automobile driven by Alfred J. GREEN of 459 Eighty-sixth street. The boy was rushed to Norwegian Hospital suffering a compound fracture of the skull. Hurt Playing Ball Anna O’CONNOR, 6, 130 York street, while playing ball on York street, near Bridge street, was struck by an automobile driven by John KEATING of Halseyneck Lave (sic), Southampton, L.I. The child was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital with a fractured right shoulder and abrasions and lacerations of the body. Girl Hit by Car Rosalie MITCHELL, 4, 2977 West Twenty-third street, was struck by an automobile while crossing West Twenty-third street near Railroad avenue, driven by Joseph GILBERT of 1718 Sixty-eighth street. The girl was taken to Coney Island Hospital suffering a possible fracture of the skull and lacerations. 1 April 1929 Sixteen persons, nine of them children, were injured in automobile accidents here last night and early this morning. Most of the accidents happened at street Intersections and one of the injured are in a serious condition. Fractured Right Leg Alafanso LESSREDO, 4, 91 Sacket Street, while crossing Sacket Street near Van Brunt Street, was struck by an automobile owned and driven by Louis DENBERBELIA, of 167 Furman Street. The child was removed to Long Island College Hospital with a fractured right leg. Runs Into Auto Maurine CONNOLLY, 5, 418 Sixty-first Street, while playing in front of his home, ran in front of an automobile driven by Bertha JENSEN, 122-19 114th Avenue. A surgeon removed the child to the Norwegian Hospital, suffering a fracture of the left leg. Boys Skull Fractured While crossing Stillwell Avenue and Eighty-sixth Street, Mario DE MARFETTO, 8, 2118 West Eighth Street, was struck by an automobile owned by Joseph PAOLELLA, of 1529 Seventy-first Street. The boy was removed to Coney Island Hospital suffering a possible fracture of the skull and lacerations of the face. Boy Taken to Hospital Philip SASOWSKI, 12, 126 Alabama Avenue, while crossing Glenmore Avenue was struck by an automobile owned by George I. MARTIN of 1 Sherman Avenue, Manhattan. The boy was removed to Bradford Street Hospital suffering a compound fracture of the left leg. Child Hurt By Car Henry FLORIDIA, 6, 514 Marcy Avenue, was struck by an automobile, driven by Joseph CONLON, of 1340 Bergen Street, while crossing Park and Marcy Avenues. The boy was treated for cuts and bruises. Boy Runs Into Machine Leonarda De ROSO, 11, 7321 Fifteenth Avenue, was struck by an automobile driven by Michael PANAGENI, of 1442 Seventy-eighth Street. The boy ran into the auto at Seventy-third Street and Fifteenth Avenue. Girl Cyclist Hurt Della ACKERMAN, 19, 8809 Twenty-third Avenue, while crossing Cropsey Avenue near Twenty-third Avenue, while riding a bicycle, ran into a touring car. After treatment by a surgeon for abrasions and lacerations she went home. Child Hit At Crossing Concetta D'ANTONO, 3, 765 East New York Avenue, while crossing Troy Avenue and East New York Avenue was struck by an automobile driven by Samuel WEIN, of 201 Linden Boulevard. The girl went home after treatment for lacerations of the scalp. Girl Cut And Bruised Elizabeth GRIFFEN, 28, 228 Highland Place, while crossing Fulton and Crescent Streets was struck by an automobile owned and driven by Dominick VENEZIA, of 391 Montauk Avenue. Boy Hurt On Bicycle Barney SCOTTI, 17, of 70 Montrose Avenue, while crossing Lorimer Street and Montrose Avenue on his bicycle ran into a machine driven by Peter FREISHMAN, of 160 South Fourth Street. Child Suffers Lacerations Abraham COHEN, 5, of 104 Powell Street, while crossing Powell Street and Pitkin Avenue, was struck by an automobile owned and driven by Harry COPPERSMITH, of 575 Belmont Avenue. After treatment by a surgeon he was taken home suffering from lacerations. Hit By Automobile John PETZUTO, 4, OF 1462-25 Vanderveer Avenue, was struck by an automobile driven by Nunzio TABERASI , of 10622 Seventy-sixth Street, Woodhaven. The boy was struck while crossing Euclid Avenue, near Weldon Street. Aged Man Injured Nathan ROAKOWITZ, 60, 18 Rutgers Street, Manhattan, was struck by an automobile driven by Murray BADER, of 857 New Lots Avenue, while crossing Blake and Hopkins Avenues. The man was attended and taken home suffering from lacerations. Two Sisters Hurt Josephine CATTONE, 18, 189 Ralph Avenue, and her sister, Bessi (CATTONE), 22 received slight lacerations while riding in an automobile owned and driven by Petro GAMPARI, OF 315 Harrison Street. At the intersection of Seventeenth Avenue and Seventy-fifth Street they collided with another machine driven by Samuel COPPERMAN, of 296 Bay Thirty-second Street. Auto Passenger Hurt James COPTOLA, 24, 297 South Third Street, while a passenger in an automobile driven by William RUDMAN, of 372 South Second Street, was in a collision with another machine driven by Max ROSENBERG, of 597 East Ninety-fifth Street, at Marcy Avenue and Stockton Street. 4 April 1929 THIRTEEN HURT BY AUTOS HERE Police Hold Driver After His Car Fells Unidentified ManOne unidentified man was killed and thirteen other persons were injured in over-night auto accidents. The injured included 10 men and three women, most of whom were able to go home after treatment. Truck Kills Man An unidentified man about 50 years of age was instantly killed last night when he was struck by an automobile truck driven by William FISHER of 588 Concord Street, Manhattan. The man was hit by the truck while crossing South Second and Berry Streets. The police of the Bedford Avenue station arrested the driver of the machine. The dead man is described as five feet nine inches tall, weighing 150 pounds and apparently Irish American. Run Down by Auto Samuel WEINER, 44, 951 Eighty-sixth Street, was struck by an automobile while crossing Sixty-fifth Street and Eighteenth Avenue, driven by Krist HANSEN of 862 Fiftieth Street. The man was attended and removed to United Israel Zion Hospital, suffering a fracture of the left arm. Youth's Foot Fractured Frank GRIECO, 17, 1521 Dean Street, while crossing Flatbush Avenue and Livingston Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Paul WINSLOW, of Forest Hill Inn. The man was attended and removed to Brooklyn Hospital suffering a fracture of the left foot. Aged Man HurtJames HEYLAN, 70, 76 Dikeman Street, while crossing Hamilton Avenue and Columbia Street, was struck by a Hamilton Avenue trolley in charge of Motorman Harry SHLAPP, of 340 Sixth Avenue. The man was removed to Kings County Hospital, suffering from a possible fractured skull. Injured at Crossing William BROECK, forty-four, number 314 East Eighty-third Street, Manhattan, was struck by an automobile driven by Albert SCLINTER of number 2603 Atlantic Avenue, while he was crossing Fulton Street at Elton Street. The man was attended for lacerations. Lacerated and Bruised Louis NEWMAN, fifty-four, number ?4 Rush Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Alexander SCHUMACHER of number 49 Parkville Avenue, while crossing Roebling Street and Division Avenue. The man was attended by a private physician for lacerations and bruises. Girl Hit by Car Ida HERMAN, twenty-one, number 105 Ross Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Joseph KATZ of number 865 East One Hundred and Seventy-seventh Street, Manhattan, while crossing Marcy Avenue and South Ninth Street. The girl was attended for cuts and bruises. Man Hurt in Crossing Dominick PARAZZO, thirty-four, number 135 Avenue U, while crossing in front of number 151 Avenue U was struck by an automobile driven by James MARTO of number 22 Styles Street. The man was taken home after treatment for cuts and bruises. Hurt in Car Crash Florence DERCHOFF, fifty-eight, number 1677 East Fifty-third Street, was injured while riding with her husband, when their car collided with an automobile driven by Frank BLAKE of number 327 Alabama Avenue. The woman suffered lacerations. Woman Injured Margaret CURRAN, 59, 380 Wythe Avenue, while crossing Broadway and Ellery Street was struck by an automobile driven by Joseph MERG, of 1659 Decatur Street. The woman suffered lacerations of the scalp and fracture of the right leg and was removed to Beth Moses Hospital. Hit by Jersey Motorist Frank KRONES, 68, 377 East Forty-sixth Street, while crossing Linden Boulevard and Utica Avenue was struck by an automobile driven by Owen LINDO, of 32 Buren Avenue, Irvington, New Jersey. The man was attended for cuts and bruises. Auto Hits Trolley Cecil HOWARD, 21, 150 Ocean Avenue, and Helman SODERMAN, 19, 150 Ocean Avenue, both suffered lacerations while passengers in a taxicab driven by Isadore HULSE, of 3723 Eighteenth Avenue, who also suffered slight cuts and bruises. The taxicab was struck by a Franklin Avenue trolley in front of 150 Ocean Avenue. The following is just a short article I found kind of sad: (also for April 4, 1929)AGED MAN, BROKE, PLEADS FOR LONG SENTENCE IN JAIL Had Just Lost Left Leg in Accident on Job "No, your honor, three months is not enough; give me six months." So spoke Louis KLOCK, 49, standing before Magistrate Thomas A. DOYLE in the Jamaica Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of vagrancy. Beside him stood Patrolman Owen DAVIS, of the Richmond Hill precinct, who had obliged the old man by taking him into custody. The officer told the court that the old man had hobbled up to him at Jamaica Avenue and 118th Street, Richmond Hill, yesterday morning and begged him to please put him in jail. He was out of work and his stomach was sorely in need of food, he explained. He had left Kings County Hospital several weeks ago, where he had his left leg amputated, he told the officer, as a result of being in a smashup about 6 months ago. Since then he found it hard to pursue his work as a building laborer. KLOCK was taken to the Richmond Hill station house, where he was given a long-needed meal. Later he was taken to the Jamaica court,where the necessary formality of making out a complaint against him was complied with. To make the transaction legally perfect. KLOCK was charged with vagrancy "in that he has no home and no visible means of support." April 6 thru 8, 1929 Two Sustain Skull Fractures Thirteen persons sustained more or less serious injuries in auto mishaps last night and early today, in one six were hurt, one sustaining a fractured skull and another possibly similar injury. Six Injured in Crash Thomas MADDEN, 26, 650 Sixty-first Street; Adalie WALGREEN, 30, 518 Seventy-third Street; Albert WALGREEN, 31, same address; William ALBERTSON, 30, 258 Fifty-second Street; Muriel ALBERTSON, 30, 258 Fifty-second Street, and Mary McDOUGAL, 29, 218 Forty-ninth Street, were injured while riding in an automobile owned and driven by Thomas MADDEN, when at Third Avenue and Fifty-ninth Street, it was in collision with a Third Avenue trolley car in charge of Motorman Henry CARTER. WALGREEN was taken to Harbor Hospital suffering a possible fracture of the skull and lacerations, and William ALBERTSON was taken to Norwegian Hospital suffering from a fracture of the skull. All others were treated and went home. Three are Hurt Irving GOLDSTEIN, 23, of 1746 Sterling Place; Francis WEINER, 21, 249 East Ninety-third Street, and Gertrude INKLES, 28, of 249 East Ninety-third Street, sustained slight injuries while riding in an automobile owned and driven by GOLDSTEIN, when at the intersection of Kings Highway and Remson Avenue, it was in collision with an automobile driven by Samuel HIRMOWITZ OF 127 Ross Street. After treatment for lacerations and contusions the injured went home. Seek Hit-Run Driver Police of Vanderveer Park Station are looking for the driver of an automobile which last night struck and slightly injured William DRAMBOEY, 18, of 1785 East Forty-seventh Street, while the boy was crossing Kings Highway at Troy Avenue. The driver of the machine fled. The boy was attended for abrasions and lacerations and went home. Sustains Cuts and Bruises Frederick MURPHY, 27, 369 East Twenty-first Street, while a passenger in an automobile owned and driven by Michael HEVATY, 369 West Twenty-first Street, was in collision with another machine owned and driven by Dominick GIRODANO, of 5302 Avenue S. MURPHY was treated for cuts and bruises and went home. The crash occurred in front of 2531 Church Avenue. Woman, 81 Injured Christena MIHNKEN, 81, and Edna MIHNKEN, 35, of 206 Park Avenue, were injured while riding in an automobile owned and driven by John MINHKEN, which was in collision with an automobile owned and driven by Hyman KAMMER, of 166 East Fifty-second Street, at Linden Boulevard and Kings Highway. They were attended for lacerations and went home. Got Off With Lacerations Elias BEAR, 24, 7214 Nineteenth Avenue, a passenger in an automobile driven by Michael STEMPLER, of 1901 Sixty-fourth Street, which was in collision with another automobile owned and driven by James DREW, of 6401 Fort Hamilton Parkway, was severely hurt. After treatment for cuts and bruises he went home. 8 April 1929 When Auto Collides With Other Machine Yesterday's summer weather, calling thousands of motorists out of doors, was not without its motor mishaps, although there were no serious accidents reported by the police, mishaps recorded involved six men, six children and four women. Two Hurt in CrashRaymond ROSENTHAL, 23, 458 East Fifty-first Street, and Samuel ROSENTHAL, 26, crossing Glenwood Road at Utica Avenue in their automobile collided with a machine driven by Benjamin SCHENDORF, of 1130 East Twenty-ninth Street. Raymond was removed to Kings County Hospital for a possible fracture of the skull; Samuel was taken home after treatment for lacerations. Injured at Crossing Petro MOLAZE, 19, 433 Myrtle Avenue, crossing Broadway and Wythe Avenue, was struck by an automobile driven by Max GARFINDEL, of 72-16 Roosevelt Avenue, Astoria, LI. He was treated for cuts and bruises. Boys Skull Fractured James BUSSA, 5, 20 Sherlock Place, was struck by an automobile driven by James SELIO, of 1159 Troy Avenue, while crossing Sherlock Place at Atlantic Avenue. Cyclist Hit by Car Samuel HAKAW, 24, 192 Hegamen Avenue, while riding a bicycle in Riverdale Avenue near East Ninety-eighth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Henry SCHMACH of 1977 Seventy-fourth Street. The young man was removed to Brownsville and East New York Hospital suffering from a possible fracture of the skull. Woman Hurt on Sidewalk Anna ROSS, 33, 641 Riverdale Avenue, was struck by an automobile driven by Morris FEINSTEIN, of 587 Bristol Street, while standing on the sidewalk at Riverdale Avenue and New Jersey Avenue. The woman was attended for lacerations. Taxi Injures Girl Bessie GANSTEIN, 22, 1709 Eighty-fifth Street, while a passenger in an automobile driven by Morris WEINSTEIN, of 1965 Union Street, was hurt in a collision with a taxicab of the Moffat Renting Co., of 915 Knickerbocker Avenue. After treatment for lacerations the girl went home. 9 April 1929 Nine persons, including five women, two men, and two children were injured in auto accidents here last night and early this morning. The man was attended and removed to Kings County Hospital suffering a fracture of the right leg. James ESPOSITO, 15, 2088 Ocean Parkway, was struck by an automobile while crossing Ocean Parkway and Avenue V, driven by Irving FASULO, of 724 Avenue W. The boy was taken home after treatment for lacerations and bruises. Jennie AARONS, 71, 1650 Seventy-Fourth Street, and Pheobe AARONS, 46, same address, while riding in an automobile driven by Harry GREENFIELD, of 2243 Eighty-Second Street, were injured when the car hit another machine at Twenty-First Avenue and Seventieth Street, driven by Paul CULTER, of 1709 West First Street. Jennie AARONS was removed to Coney Island Hospital suffering a fracture of the left shoulder. Phoebe went home after treatment for contusions. Anna CONNORS, 28, 172 Douglass Street, and Raymond PRICKETT, 28, 53 Butler Street, were both slightly injured while riding in an automobile driven by PRICKETT, in front of 2444 Coney Island Avenue, which was struck by a Smith Street trolleycar, in charge of Motorman Busio BEACATTO, of 204 Newkirk Avenue. Both the injured were attended, the girl for concussion of the brain and Raymond, for cuts and bruises. While riding in an automobile at the intersection of Liberty and Pennsylvania Avenues, Viola HAESE, 32, 316 Forty-Second Street, was hurt when the car collided with another machine driven by Michael ANPANZO, 11 Starr Street. After treatment for lacerations of face and hands the woman went home. Athur DUTCH, 23, 1828 Sixty-Sixth Street, while riding a bicycle in Bay Parkway at Sixty-Fifth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Richard FELDEL, of 1625 Brooklyn Avenue. The young man went home after treatment for a possible fractured rib. Minnie ROSSICK, 32, 85 Strong Street, Bronx, while in an automobile driven by her husband, Charles, was hurt in a collision with another machine driven by Benjamine LIEHENSTEIN, of 222 Neptune Avenue, atthe Park circle entrance of Prospect Park. The woman went home with her husband, after treatment for cuts and bruises. 16 April 1929 Wet Pavements Responsible for Many Accidents to Motorists Wet pavements were responsible for a number of auto accidents which injured twenty-two persons here over night. The list included sixteen men, five women, and one child, but although some are still confined to hospitals, none are in serious condition. Five Hurt in Crash Five young men were slightly injured when a taxi in which they were riding and driven by Benjamine SCHILDER, of 6 Nass Walk, Coney Island, collided with an automobile truck driven by Oscar HOLM, 31 Duffield Street, at Flatbush Avenue Extension and Tillery Street. Due to the wet pavement the taxi smashed into the truck, skidded and turned over causing lacerations and bruised to the four men passengers in the rear. They are, Max OFFERMAN, 46, 7110 Nineteen Avenue; Samuel ROSENBERG, 28, 1612 Forty-Eighth Street; Daniel SILVER, 26, 5315 Fifteenth Avenue, and Frank GIOVOUNI, 42, 305 Rugby Road. All the passengers including the driver of the taxi were treated by a surgeon from the Cumberland Hospital. Injured at Crossing Bernard SODEN, 56, 686 Tenth Street, while crossing Eighth Avenue and Tenth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Joseph SANKI, of 1249 East Tenth Street. The man was removed to Methodist Episcopal Hospital suffering from concussion of the brain. Suffers Hip Injury David LONGER, 30, 832 Linden Boulevard, was struck by an automobile while crossing Linden Boulevard and East Fifty-Second Street. The car was driven by Nelson SHAFF, of 293 East Fifty-Fifth Street. The man was removed to Kings County Hospital suffering from a fracture of the left hip. Aged Man is Hurt Ernest WESTFALL, 65, 29 Brevoort Place, while crossing Bedford Avenue and Monroe Street, was struck by an automobile driven by William BEGINS of 2247 Schenectady Avenue. After treatment by a surgeon he was removed to Kings County Hospital suffering from a possible fracture of the left thigh. Fractures Skull Patrick DONLAN, 50, 1632 East Thirteenth Street, while crossing Kings Highway and East Fifteenth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Charles PARKER of 236 Dean Street. A surgeon from the Coney Island Hospital removed the injured man to that institution suffering from a possible fracture at the skull, and lacerations of the face. Woman Run Down Agnes BOYLE, 38, 148½ Sixteenth Street, while crossing Fourth Avenue and Sixteenth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Martin MANDELL of 1519 East Third Street. The woman went home after treatment for a possible fracture of the nose. Auto Injures Man Neary DRURY, 56, 194 Eighth Street, while crossing Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street, was struck by an automobile driven by Frank DORLAN of 604 Fifth Street. The man sustained a fractured left jaw and multiple lacerations and contusions and was removed to Methodist Episcopal Hospital. Hit and Run Victim Police of the Fourth Avenue station are looking for the driver of an automobile who early last night struck Frank FOLEY, 55, 4318 Eighth Avenue, while the man was crossing Eighth Avenue at Forty-Third Street. According to witnesses, the driver of the machine put on more speed after striking the man and escaped through a side street. The man was removed in Norwegian Hospital suffering from fractured ribs and bruises. Pushed in Car’s Path Michael LINEEN, 55, 174a Veronia Place, while walking on the sidewalk near the curb, was accidentally pushed into the path of an automobile driven by Charles BRUNO, of 1270 Seventy-Seventh Street, at Tilden Avenue and Rogers Avenue. The man went home after treatment for cuts and bruises. One of the victims was a patrolman who was run down by a car that sped on after the accident. He was attended and taken to Brownsville and East New York Hospital suffering from a fracture of the right leg. Then Woeful Mother Appears to Claim Runaway, 3 Frederic DEUTSCH, a taxi driver, of 3702 Flatlands Avenue, arose from bed a 3 o’clock this morning and proceeded to take his car from the garage and go to work. He got as far as Kimball Street and Flatlands Avenue when he saw a real, live kewpie coming down the middle of the avenue. He rubbed his eyes in amazement. The kewpie remained there. DEUTSCH approached and found a boy about three years old and clothed in very little. DEUTSCH then picked the kewpie up and took him to the Vandeveer police station. When they arrived the kewpie began to cry, and the lieutenant, three sergeants and seven policemen spent 4½ hours amusing the kewpie to keep him quiet. They wrapped him up in a policeman’s overcoat, fed him milk and coffee, danced Indian war dances, swinging their clubs; put on boxing bouts and even resorted to making funny faces for the kewpie’s amusement. At 7:30 a frantic woman rushed into the police station and said her boy had disappeared from home during the night. Immediately, ten weary policemen handed her the kewpie and she identified him as her son, Richard MOORE, 3, of 1478 East Thirty-Eighth Street. Mrs. MOORE said Richard had not been able to walk up to his second year, but that he had found his legs in the last few months and was making great headway. Evidently, she said, he woke up last night and decided he would continue his walking exercise regardless of time and place. The list of those hurt also includes four women and two children. Three of the injured were victims of hit and run drivers. All sustained severe cuts on the head and body and were taken to Dr. KING'S private hospital at Bay Shore. Two Are Drowned in Rough Water A fishing excursion by three men off Chicken Point, near Port Washington, yesterday resulted fatally for two. George KIRK, of 326 East Ninety-Third Street, Manhattan, was drowned. His father, Gilbert KIRK, 87, of the same address, was pulled out of the water alive but died on the shore before police arrived with a pulmotor. John WEDDELL, KIRK'S son-in-law, was saved and revived. The rescues were made by George LAMPUS, 16, of Chicken Point, who commandeered a rowboat when he heard the cries of the men and saw them struggling in the water. He rowed out to them and pulled the elder KIRK and WEDDELL into the boat. The younger KIRK had disappeared. The drownings resulted when the boat containing the fishermen capsized as the water turned rough. The three went to Port Washington early yesterday. In the afternoon the wind freshened as the tide began to come in. The boat, about 250 yards off shore, was caught in a large wave and overturned. Scores of other fishermen were in boats nearby, police said, when the accident occurred, but LAMPUS was the first to reach the drowning men and made the rescues unaided. 30 April 1929 Fifteen persons, including five men, for women, and six children, were injured in auto accidents last night and early this morning. Police of the Fifth avenue station, who describe the man as 55 years old, 5 feet 9 inches in height, weighing about 125 pounds, say the man might be Charles ANDERSON. A card bearing this name issued in March of this year from the Brooklyn State Hospital was found in his possession. The dead man was crossing the roadway at Third Avenue when he was struck by the machine, which was driven by Frank Clyde ARNOLT of 160-81 St. Ott avenue. The man was rushed to the hospital where he died shortly after. Detectives of the Fourth avenue station are investigating. The man was attended for a possible fracture of the left ankle and was removed to St. Johns Hospital. After treatment for multiple lacerations the child remained home. 2 WOMEN DIE AS CARS CRASH; DRIVERS HELD Brooklyn Girl is Killed When Passing Auto Upsets Machine Two women, one of them from Brooklyn, were killed. Two are said to be critically injured, and several others suffered lesser injuries in two automobile accidents on Long Island yesterday, for which two men face homicide charges today. Miss Gertrude TILLMAN, 18, of 463 Hinsdale street, was killed instantly when the car in which she was riding sidewiped another car and turned over on Sunrise Highway near New Bridge road. Miss Doris BELFER, 17 of 652 Georgia avenue, who was also caught beneath the overturned car, is in a critical condition today at the Nassau Hospital at Mineola. Harry GROSSMAN, 21, of 398 Junius street, is in the same hospital with serious cuts and bruises and Abraham LEVIN, of 91 Williams street, is also being treated here for three broken ribs. GROSSMAN is under arrest on a technical charge of homicide. FATALLY INJURED Mrs. Martha ENGSTROM, 38 of 122-20 115th avenue, Richmond Hill, was fatally injured and died before she could be given medical aid when the car driven by Joseph CASEY, 21, of 57 Russell street, crashed into the car in which she was riding with her husband. Helen ENGSTROM, 11, daughter of the dead woman, sustained a broken leg and a probably [sic] fractured skull. She is reported to be in a critical condition at the Rockaway Beach Hospital. The accident occurred on Cross Bay road near Raunt. According to those who saw the crash in which Miss TILLMAN was killed, GROSSMAN was driving his car at a high rate of speed when he sidewiped the car driven by John G. BALLTON and overturned. BALLTON was uninjured and his car was only slightly damaged. The accident in which Mrs. ENGSTROM was killed was the sequel of a road house meeting between CASEY, John CRAIG of 182 Driggs avenue; two girls, whose names the police withheld, and Paul SANTANGELO, 24, of 164 Driggs avenue. OFFERED THEM RIDE SANTANGELO, according to detectives, offered to drive the four out to the bungalow where they were staying at Broad Channel. They accepted the offer and SANTANGELO drove them part of the way. Then CASEY objected to SANTANGELO’S driving and took the wheel himself. Left without the car to look after, the detectives said, SANTANGELO tried to force his attentions upon one of the girls and she slapped him. During the quarrel which resulted, CASEY let go the wheel, according to the report, to strike SANTANGELO and the car crashed into the car driven by ENGSTROM. ENGSTROM’S car then crashed into a taxicab. The five in SANTANGELO’S car continued on to the bungalow where they were arrested. Later CASEY was held on a technical charge of homicide and SANTANGELO held on the charge of being partly responsible for Mrs. ENGSTROM’S death. The injured were attended by a surgeon from Trinity Hospital. 22 July 1929 TWO HIT-AND RUN DRIVERS HUNTED BY THE POLICE Police of the Clymer street station are searching for the hit and run driver whose automobile struck five-year-old Helen DIFELITE of 149 Lorimer street as she was crossing the street in front of her home yesterday. After the child was struck, the driver, according to neighbors, speeded up his machine and disappeared. Helen was treated by dr. ISRAEL at Beth Moses Hospital for lacerations and contusions of the scalp. -Frank BARBAGALLO, 6 years old, of 135 Vermont street, is in the Bradford Hospital suffering from abrasions of the right knee received when he was struck by a hit and run autoist while crossing the street, in front of his home yesterday, according to police of the Miller avenue station who have instituted a search for the driver. -Mrs. Caroline ULLINGER, 57 years old, of 127 McKinley avenue, is in Kings County Hospital with a fractured left ankle received according to police when she was struck by an automobile owned and operated by William BEYHL of 2555 Pitkin avenue, Brooklyn. The woman was removed to St. Catherine's Hospital suffering a possible fractured right ankle.
