Volunteer Fire Dept.
If you have someone who was a volunteer fireman in NYC prior to and just
after the end of the Civil War write to:

City of New York
Fire Department
Fire Academy
 Randall's Island
George F. Mand Library
New York, NY 10035
212-860-9200

I was told by the librarian, Daniel Maye, that they have records form
1860-1865. The copy in the books is hard to read and of poor quality but he
was able to work wonders with the 3 sheets he sent me. It helps if you know
the engine company your ancestor was in .

Many volunteers mustered into the Civil War in Zouave unites. If you check
the unit homepages you might find your ancestors on them.
