GRADUATING EXERCISES OF No. 4
Brooklyn Union-Argus
July 3, 1877

The graduating exercises of Public School No. 4, took place at the Simpson
M. E. Church, corner of Willoughby and Clermont avenues.

The Local Committee was represented by Mr. H. E. WHEELER and Dr. C. H. SCHAPPS, . . .

The salutatory was delivered by Miss Lizzie J. SMITH, who welcomed the
audience and bespoke in kindly consideration.

Master C. G. TODD followed with a disquisition on salt, reviewing the
history of that article everywhere except in combination with 'Salt River.'

Miss Sarah F. COOK, encharmed her audience with the reading of the 'The Old
Clock on the Stair.'

Miss Ida HURLEY ? Explained how happiness, the aim of life, could be best attained.

Miss Gertrude ROBERTS rendered 'A Lecture on Women’s Rights’ with very fine
effect, though her voice was sunk too low.

Master Walter E. WHITNEY declaimed 'The Higher Views of the Union' with much spirit.

Miss Cornelia A. TEAL gave a humorous description of the characteristics of
the class and Miss Lucy G. WATT delivered the valedictory.

But the great attraction of the evening was Miss Maggie STEWARD, whose
dramatic powers evinced in the rendition of three pieces, - - -? the tragic,
the comic and the sentimental, were rapturously applauded.
