AMHERST COLLEGE
Preparing for Commencement--The Fall Season
     "From a Special Correspondent"
Amherst, April 17

The appointments for the next commencement were announced this afternoon. 
Valedictory was awarded to Arthur H. WILLMAN, of Malden, Mass; 
Salutatory to William W. SLEEPER of Worcester, Mass.; 
Department of political economy to Charles H. FULLER, of Brooklyn; 
Department of physic to Henry B. GOODWIN, of Brooklyn; 
Department of mental and moral science to Harry N. GARDINER, of Bristol, England; 
Department of mathematics to George S. ELY, of Fredonia, N.Y.; 
Department of geology to George H. WILLIAMS, of Utica, N.Y.; 
Department of chemistry to H.S. JOHNSON, of Lowell, Mass.; 
Department of physiology to William M. LADD, of Portland, Or.; 
Latin to Joseph W. FAIRLEY, of Berkley, Mass., 
Department of modern languages to D.H. COLCORD, of Danvers, Mass. 

The monitors appointed from the present junior class for the next year 
were also announced, and were: 
John F. JAMESON, 
Charles L. GOODRICH, 
Charles B. GOLD 
Arthur W. KELLEY.

William PEET, Jr., of Brooklyn, was elected class prophet for the senior 
class supper, which is to be held in Boston at the end of commencement week.

There is this year a livelier interest in baseball than ever before, and 
Amherst sends forth a nine which will stand a good chance for the college 
championship. A grand stand has been built upon the new ball grounds, and the 
field is in a fine condition. 
Games have been arranged with all the college and many professional nines. 

The members of the college team are as follows:

second base; W.H. CRITTENDEN, '81,

J.L. WENTZ, '79, right field.
