Duffield and Johnson streets Brooklyn Union Argus PUBLIC SCHOOLS VISIT OF THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT TO SEVERAL OF THEM GRADUATING EXERCISES AT NO. 5--PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMAS State Superintendent of Public Schools, Neil GILMOUR, and Superintendent Andrew MCMILLAN, of Utica, this morning visited several of the public schools in this city, in company with Superintendent FIELD. At No. 11 they were received by the Local Committee, consisting of Messrs. CAMPBELL, CULYER, GATES and COLE, and subsequently at No. 27 and No. 5 by their committees. At the latter school, No. 5, which is on the corner of Duffield and Johnson streets, they were entertained in listening to the graduating exercises of the academic class. Besides the above named gentlemen there were Colonel Thomas CARROLL, chairman of No. 5, Mr. B.Y. CONKLIN, Prof. JELLIFFE, Mr. John GALLAGHER, Mr. Albert S. CASWELL and several of the friends of the scholars. THE GRADUATES: Isabella HOLMES, Honora M. QUINN, James T. HART Benjamin WECHSLER. The first named three read compositions of their own, and the lad Benjamin WECHSLER recited and performed a violin solo. The compositions were rather above the average, but in one instance-- that of James T. HART--the reading was poor. WECHSLER RECITED ADMIRABLY. State Superintendent GILMOUR, Miss HOLMES and Miss QUINN were also presented with bouquets. The class teacher, Miss Anna L. MUMFORD, was likewise the recipient of a basket of flowers. THE OTHER EXERCISES; Piano solo by Lydia SMITH, Reading by : Lizzie LONG, Ella TICHNOR, Mary MURRAY, Avis LANGDON; Recitations by : Katie BALANTINE and Katie GOWER Vocal solo, "The Lover and the Bird," by Mary MURRAY, who received a bouquet from a gentleman on the platform; and Florence ASHLEY, a member of the Academic Class. There was also singing by the school, with Mr. CASWELL at the piano. Mr. CONKLIN was congratulated by the State Superintendent and Mr. MCMILLAN, who expressed themselves as highly pleased with what they had seen and heard.
