York street, near Bridge Brooklyn Union-Argus Tuesday 1 July 1879 The pupils of the grammar department of Public School No. 7, received their friends this morning and entertained them with interesting exercises. The exercises included declamations by : Daniel IRWIN, Frank S. HOLTOP, Nettie MC MANUS and Willie BURKHART; recitations by : Katie TYRRELL, Thos. P. CROUNE Alice MC DONNELL; dialogue, "The Sewing Circle" by Belle LEECH, Annie LEE, Annie COLGAN, Lizzie WALLACE, Annie FARMEGTON, Jennie NESTELL Jennie E. BRESLAND; dialogue, "The British Lion and American Hoosier" By Robert WILSON, Thos. M. BROWN, Wm DORAN; dialogue, "1770 and 1879," by Jennie D. BREISLAND and Bella MC MILLEN; song by Maggie CONNERY; vocal duets by Agnes MITCHELL and David WALLACE; solo with semi-chorus, by David WHITE; solo, with chorus, by Cecilia REDMAYNE, songs by the school Prof. Carl WAGNER was musical director. The number of scholars in the grammar department is 347. Of these 190 received certificates, the recipients being those who had been present every day of their school term, and in their studies showed ninety per cent. Mr. C. P. CUNNINGHAM, the Principal, was congratulated on the good showing made by the scholars. The children were also highly complimented by the gentlemen of the Board of Education on their progress. Some drawings on the blackboard by Rebecca BORLAND, Jennie BREISLAND, Annie FARRINGTON, and Bella MC MILLEN were unusually artistic.
