The Twenty-second Annual Commencement-Distribution of Prizes by Bishop
LOUGHLIN
   The twenty-second annual commencement of St. Francis’ College, Baltic
street, near Court, took place last evening at the Athenaeum, which was
crowded in every part.

   The salutatory was spoken by John M. McCARTHY, 
followed with a song 'The Minstrel Boy' (MOORE), by W. J. COURTNEY. 
W. J. RYAN gave an essay 'The Classics'; 
Herbert F. FARRELL sang 'The Bridge' MAILARD; 
Jos. A. McKENNA read an essay entitled 'Painting, a Catholic Art'; 
Louis J. ADAMS’ essay was 'The Catholic Church and Modern Society'; and 
Herbert F. FARRELL gave a discourse on 'Irish Poetry'. 

Then came the award of gold and silver medals, books, etc.by Bishop LOUGHLIN. 
In all there were about two hundred prizes. 
In the senior department the first gold medal for general excellence, 
presented by Rev. W.J. DOHERTY, was awarded to William J. RYAN, 
and the second gold medal for elocution given by Rev. W. J. HILL, 
was awarded to Herbert F. FARRELL. 
In the second preparatory class J. J. CONWAY received a silver medal presented by
Rev. Peter PLUNKETT.
