CLOSING EXERCISES AT THE ACADENY ON THE HILL.

The Graduates, the Entertainment and the Premiums --
Creditable Advancement in Art and the Sciences --
Address by Bishop LOUGHLIN.

The closing exercises and distribution of premiums
of the Academy of the Visitation occurred yesterday afternoon
at the new convent of that order on the corner of Clinton and
Willoughby avenues. In addition to the 170 pupils there were
present the Right Rev. John LOUGHLIN, bishop of the diocese;
Vicar General KEEGAN,
Rev. Fathers TAFFE, McCULLOM, MALLON, KIELY, BOBLER, GALLAGHER,
MITCHELL, MELIA, WOODS, MENINGES, HADYN, O'DONOHUE, JAMMEL,
McCARTHY, WHITMAN, O'MALLON and McGOLDRICK; also the relatives
and friends of the graduates. The large hall of the building
was profusely decorated with bunting and natural flowers, and
the trailing similax and evergreens that covered the platform
gave the place the appearance of a conservatory.

The three grand pianos beneath the platform were arranged
to form a semi circle, in the center of which a large golden harp
glinted dazzingly in the sunlight. As the children and young
ladies entered the room and took their places,
Miss Carlotta HIGGINBOTHAM played on the piano the entrance march.
She was followed
Misses Annie STEWART,
Mary WILFORD,
Julia MAGUIRE and Theresa CALLAHAN in a grand Coronation March,
from MEYERBEER (or MEYERBOER);
after which Miss HIGGINBOTHAM again delivered "O Gloria Domina,"
from LAMBILOTTE, and was well and deservingly applauded.

A chorus by the class followed, and then gold medals were awarded
the three graduates,
Misses
Margaret M. BURKE,
Julia E. MAGUIRE
May J. CAMPBELL,
for uniform excellence of deportment and success in English studies.
A crown of flowers was also placed on the head of each of the young
ladies by the Bishop.

Miss Julia MAGUIRE and Miss Annie STEWART played a duet in a creditable manner,
Misses Rita RYAN and Carlotta HIGGINBOTHAM sang, "Se o Corra Sorridi."
Premiums of books and bric a brac were awarded to the members of the
different classes, beginning with the First Academic Department, and
the duo, "La Traviata," was executed by Miss Fannie MOORE, first piano, and
Miss Priscilla McGOEY second piano.
Both young ladies deserve much praise, and reflect credit on their tutors.

The "Bird and the Violet," as rendered on the piano by Miss Julia MAGUIRE,
and also well received.
The junior class then sang in chorus and was followed by
Misses Julia MAGUIRE,
Annie STEWART,
Teresa* CALLAHAN
Carlotta HIGGINBOTHAM in the difficult "La Reine des Fees,"
the rendering of which elicited a storm of applause.
Premiums in instrumental and vocal music, drawing and oil painting
were then conferred, and
Misses
Annie HEALEY,
Annie STEWART and
Agnes RYAN sang "O Restless Sea," accompanied by little Rita RYAN on the harp.

The Grand Russian March from FRANCIS, as rendered by
Misses
Fannie MOORE,
Priscilla McGOEY
Gertrude KELLY and
Cecilia CALLAHAN, was very good, and after a
harp solo by Miss HIGGINBOTHAM the musical exercises were concluded.

The Bishop then addressed the young ladies, congratulating them on
the progress they had made in their studies during the year and
urging upon them the necessity of continuing until they could go
proudly out, carrying with them the highest honors. He also
commended the Mother Superior and her assistants for their
untiring devotion to the cause of education, religious and
otherwise. After the exercises the visitors spent an hour in
examining the drawings and paintings of the scholars which hung
in the parlors, all of which reflected great credit on the executors.

The following is a list of those exhibited, with the names of the authors:
