PS#15-Johnstown Relief Fund
Brooklyn Standard Union
1 June 1889

The following list is related to a story on the bursting
of the dam at the lake of South Fork, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pa.
Men, women and children were carried along frantically shrieking for help.
Rescue was impossible. It is said that it was impossible to estimate the
number whose lives were lost in the flood.
The basin contaied water measuring 2 miles across by 5 miles in length
and 70 feet at it's deepest. The people of Johnstown were warned of
the possibility of it's bursting duing the morning, but very few,
if any, of the inhabitants took the warning seriously. Shortly
after noon the dam gave way about five miles above Johnstown and
sweeping everything before it burst upon the town with terrible force.
Houses demolished, swept from their foundations and carried in the
flood to a culvert near the town. Two story houses, barns, stables,
whole forests of trees, outhouses, smoke houses, railroad bridges,
rafts, inverted skiffs, and driftwood by the acre are floating by,
from all of which imploring hands are outstretched out to the banks
wiling but impotent to help.
After, only 2 houses could be seen in the town, The valley towns are
annihilated.

The Standard-Union Johnstown Relief Fund, was started immediatley in
Brooklyn for the survivors of the flood, contributions poored in.
The following is a list from
