SCHOLARSHIP LADS RECEIVE DIPLOMAS 
Interesting Commencement Exercises Held on Board the St. Mary's - The Prize Winners

Twenty-eight  ruddy-cheeked graduatess of the  schoolship St. Mary's, last 
night, received diiplomas which entitle them to become cadets or 
quartermasters iin the American merchant marine. Over 500 relatives and 
friends of the oung  mariners attended the commencement exerccises, which 
were held on the gun deck of theold craft at East Twenty-fourth street, 
Manhattan. Commander G. C. HANUS, U. S. N., retired, who is captain of the 
ship, presided.

The  diplomas were presented to the graduates by James WEIR, chairman of the 
Executive Committee of the Nautical School, who explained how the Board of 
Education found pride in prearing young seamen for the merchant marine. E. H. 
COLE, president of the Alumni Association of the St. Mary's, delivered prizes 
which had been offered by the association.
 
Gregory BENNETT received a silver medal for general excellence; 
Soloman G. ROWE, a  bronze medal for seamanship,
Isaac B. SMITH, a bronze medal for navigation.

Col. W. D. MANN distributed prizes  for proficiency in the economy of rations 
as follows: 
Chester BARR won first prize, a pair of superior field glasses; 
Isaac SMITH won second prize, a fine new octant; 
John R. HAYS won third prize, "Lecky's Wrinkles in Navigation."

E. L. STEVENS, in the absence of City Superintendent MAXWELL, awarded prizes 
as follows: 
First, Lecky's "Wrinkles in Navigation," to John TITTER, for  proficiency in 
steering and heaving the lead; 

Second prize for general excellence, Lecky's "Wrinkles in Navigation," 
to William H. THATCHER, 
 
Third prize, for general excellencem a  copy of Bowditch's Navigator," to 
Soloman G. ROWE. 

A prize offered by Mrs. HAMUS,  wife of the captain of the 
ship, for neaaatness of appearance, was won by Robert DODSON.

Capt. C. D. PARSONS, president of the Maritime Association, delivered some 
timely advice to the young seamen. Roy W. LEE was the valedictorian of the 
graduating class.

The schoolship has just returned from its annual cruise in foreign waters.
