DIPLOMAS GIVEN TWENTY-FIVE GIRLS
St. Francis Xavier's Graduates Greeted by an Immense Audience Last Night
PROGRAMME OF HIGH ORDER
Neat Addresses by the Rev. Francis J. HICKEY.

Twenty-five beautifully gowned, happy and smiling girls, composing the
'07 class of the St. Francis Xavier's Academy, ,
received their diplomas last night in full view of hundreds of relatives
and friends who attended the graduating exercises in the auditorium of the church.

Miss Isabelle Marie RUSH, author of the class poem, made a decisive hit
by her witty characterization of her classmates. She set off their
individual peculiarities, praised each as well as gently censuring
them. As she devoted some time to each girl, when in the list several
girls named Mary [May?] appeared, she referred to them in the following
manner.

In closing for the class she paid a little tribute to their parents.

There are so many Mays in sight--I see a maze of Mays to-night--
(In fact the Mays amaze me quite)--it's hard to say just which is which.
Like girls who are disposed to wear (and you will find them ev'rywhere),
A good supply of purchased hair--one can't determine which is switch.

To May, who Virgil knows by heart, and who to Horace could impart
A knowledge of the learned art of writing classic Latin lines,
I simply want to intimate that if she's asked to conjugate,
(I fear the counsel come too late), she's ill advised if she declines.

My late friend, May, whom I adore; for German always late of yore;
Whose car was oft behind before--none such you find where'er you search!
Perhaps her faults I should conceal; but truth compels me to reveal
That when her wedding bell will peal--she'll keep him "waiting at the
church."

To May the third, who bears the name of one who won enduring fame
The day the apple downward came, I'll say a word or two to-night,
The fruit that caused poor Eve to sin, was used to help Sir Isaac win
The high esteem we hold him in--God's gifts are boons when used aright.

Another May (that's number four), like Yorkick, "sets the table roar
With laughter," and, indeed, what's more, her fund of wit can cast a
spell
Man can't resist, howe'er he tries. The merry twinkle in her eyes
Would banish sighs of any size. Though she's not ill, I wish her well.
