Erasmus Hall HS Commencement
Brooklyn Daily Eagle
26 June 1935
DR. LOW MAKES DEBUT WITH GRADUATION TALK
Back to the scene of former good times went Dr. J. Herbert LOW last
night. Standing on the same stage from which he graduated students and
introduced commencement speakers for 17 years, Dr. LOW made his debut as a
commencement speaker.
Students -- more than 750 of them -- who were pupils at Erasmus Hall
High School while Dr. LOW was principal, sat back in the rows of seats on the
stage and applauded their former principal, who returned to them on a
memorable night, their last as students of Erasmus.
Dr. LOW, in his commencement address, reminisced about the past and
compared that "recollected past" with the "obvious present."
"Looking back over the years I spent at Erasmus," he said, "I cannot
help but compare them with today. I find, quite naturally, several great
differences. But the most remarkable change noticeable is that which has
taken place in the student body.
"Students then," he added, "were eager seekers after knowledge, even
as they are today, but then regulations, rules, laws kept them from
developing an individual personality with which to treat their education and
distinguish their culture. Now, self-governing bodies have been introduced
in a majority of the schools and for once the student has learned to
appreciate the value of being self-reliant."
Dr. LOW, in summing up the qualities of both the student of 18 years
ago and the student of today, said that "the student of today is by far the
better, the more desirable, the finer citizen of the two. he is interested
in education in a practical way and he applies education to life with an eye
to the future."
Dr. John F. McNEILL, principal, presided and presented the candidates
for diplomas. George J. DAVIDSON, senior grade adviser, conferred the
diplomas and presented the awards.
