Girls High School Commencement

CONCENTRATE ON BEST USE OF CHARACTER ASSETS 
       The qualities of self-knowledge, self-reverence and self-control were 
urged upon the 197 graduates or Girls High School at the commencement 
exercises last night at the school, Norstrand Ave. and Halsey Street.

       The speaker was John LOFTUS, Assistant Superintendent of Schools.
       "With these three gifts, properly used, I am sure you will accomplish 
all that your friends could wish for you," said Dr. LOFTUS.

       Particularly he urged them to check up on their assets of character 
and ability so as to be able to use them to best advantage in business, 
society and at home.

       Dr. Maurice E. ROGALIN, principal, presided, and presented the awards 
and diplomas.

       Elizabeth A. JACKSON, president of the senior class, gave the address 
of welcome.   The school orchestra played several selections, and Jacqueline 
SALA, violinist and graduate, was one of an instrumental trio.

       The awards were:

       Medal and diplomas for co-operation in government, Helen FRANK, medal; 
Shirley V. FINKBEINER and Frances R CONTRINO, diplomas; "No. 15" award for 
greatest improvement during course to Rose M. SIEGFREID; Loyal League medals: 
 for excellence in English to Harriet V. VINOGRADE; for excellence in 
mathematics to Mildred CLUTE; Belding Memorial Association certificate for 
outstanding secretarial work to Edith HASSENFRATS; medal awarded by Science 
Club of the school for excellence in three sciences to Sabina F. BOJARSKI; 
Almeda Sprague Memorial Prizes for good citizenship to Shirley V FINKBEINER, 
Elizabeth A. JACKSON and Harriet J. VINOGRADE; Battle Pass Chapter, D.A.R., 
medal for excellence in American history to Ines M. FORTE; New York Classical 
Club medal for excellence in Latin (fourth year) to Emma L. SMITH; Alliance 
Francaise medal to Harriet J. VINOGRADE ; Institut Francais medal to Leona 
ZIRULICK; medals of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish to Nessie 
P. TRAKTMAN and Dorothy DIAMOND; Bolivar medal (Spanish) to Raquel DE LA 
VEGA;  Steuben Society medal for excellence in German to Harriet J. 
VINOGRADE; medal of the American Association of Teachers of German (given by 
the Steuben Society), to Henrietta S. SZYMANSKI; medals given by the glee 
club and orchestra of the school to Grace M. HURLEY, glee club; Tessie 
ADAMOWITZ and Jacqueline SALA, orchestra; Saint Gaudens art medal to Elsa 
KULA; prizes for excellence in homemaking to Elaine M. THOMSON and Josephine 
R. VIOLETTO; Public School Athletic League medals awarded to Dorothy DOERR, 
Lola L. JAFFE and Katherine E. VOLLAND; Wingate Memorial certificate to 
Dorothy DOERR; the Higgins Memorial award (trip to Washington with school 
party in the Spring) to Harriet J. VINOGRADE.  

       Scholarships -- Sylvia V. FINKBEINER has received a $100 scholarship 
for four years at Susquehanna University, Selinagrove, Pa.; Jeannette F. 
GASTER awarded a Long Island University scholarship of $100 for the freshman 
year; Esther SIMON (on competitive examination), Adelphi College 
scholarships.
