September
. . . As to the schoolhouses, comparatively little change has taken place in
them since the vacation opened, though a great deal of repairing has been
done, and some of it in the plumbing arrangements, whereby a more wholesome
atmosphere will be found when they are reopened. The principal repairs have
been in repainting Schools No. 4, 5, 6, 9, 27, 28, 29, 34, and Primary No.
5. No. 19 has had a new ventilating apparatus put in, and has been
refurnished.

No. 39, on the corner of Eighth st and Sixth ave, formerly known as
Primary No. 2, will be ready for the reception of pupils in the latter part
of September. The old primary school was held in a hired building on the
corner of Seventeenth st and Seventh ave, but the new building
belongs to the city, and is put on the city's own land. It has cost $48,737,
of which $29,250 was for the mason work, and the balance for carpenter work.

Primary No. 6, on Fifteenth st near Fourth ave, has now been changed
to a grammar school, with primary departments as usual, under the name of
No. 40. The committee consists of Messrs. DUTCHER, RICHARDSON and FISHER,
and the Principal is Eliza FORD.

Primary No. 3 had not room enough in its old quarters corner of Bedford
ave and Jefferson st, and it is probable that the committee will hire
the basement of the Central Congregational Church in Ormond place if it can
be hired for two years or more at an annual rent of not more than $800, and
fitted up at a cost of not more than $300.

In addition to the public school pupils the private schools and academies of
