Progress High School for Professional Careers is one of a trio of schools
replacing Eastern District High School, which had become a haven for gangs and
violence, fights and slashings. In contrast, today, Progress, like the rest of the
building, is a mostly orderly place. Metal detectors are gone, hallways are neat,
and kids who straggle are admonished to get to class on time. Academics have so
improved that in 2001 Progress came off the state's "failing schools" list,
where its predecessor had languished for 12 years before being closed. Although
Progress has much work to do, "it has now become a school of choice and not a
school of last resort," says its personable principal, William Justino, who was
born and raised in the neighborhood and deserves some of the credit for the turnaround.
Other 2 schools in the 850 Grand Street Campus are
The High School for Legal Studies and the
High School for Enterprise, Business and Technology.
The schools share sports teams and other after school activities and some advanced
placement classes. (Pamela Wheaton, May 2003)
