1878 Board of Education Brooklyn
9 JANUARY 1878
The Final Meeting In The Old Room Yesterday.
The Helath Committee's Report Discussed and Partly Adopted---The Cubic Feet
of Air and Floor Space Pupils Ought to Have---Colored School No. 3 Wants a
Male Principal---Another Patent Right Suit Against the Board, Etc.

The last meeting of the Board of Education in the old depot room was
held yesterday afternoon, it being announced that the new meeting room in
the addition just erected in the rear will be ready for occupation by the
first of next month.

The old room was stripped of its carpet and bore other eveidences of the
anticipated removal, and dreew fourth general remarks indicative of a
general regret at parting, notwithstanding the frequently expressed wish for
a "mew depot".

The President shrunk back a little at the frist sound of his footfall
on the bare floor, and exclaimed: :Looks rather rough, don't it!"

Mr. BURR glanced at the southeasterly corner, and after turning his hat
over affectionately, observed: "I don't think my old hat will stay here to
day; it's been put in the closet in that corner at every meeting for
twenty-five years past."

Dr. SCHAPPS said the confusion of the room was typical of their meeting,
perhaps.

The President repelled the idea that there was anything to create
confusion in the meeting.

After the meeting was called to order, a communication was received from
John E. MOORE, of 117 South Oxford street, stating that he would
  HOLD THE BOARD RESPONSIBLE
in damages for the infringement of his patent "HYNES" bentilators in using
the same in the School House No. 19, corner of South Second and Tenth
streets, E.D. He claimed $2,000. damages, and notified the Board to
discontiue its use. Refferred to the Ventilating Committee.

A communication signed by E.B. BURDICK, Thomas JACKSON, H.A. Dias, and
sixteen other citizens and taxpayers of the Eastern Districk was presented,
asking for an increase of the grade of Colored School No. 3, and the
appointment of a male Principal thereof.
Referred to Teachers' and Local Committee of No. 3, and the Superintendent.

        THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
reported bills passed for payment for the following purposes:
Local Committee work $ 172.02
Rent of primary school houses 435.00
Work for Committee on
        School houses 3,475.00
Repairs to pianos 40.00
Fuel and supplies 685.81
Warming and ventilation 1,100.00
Printing and advertising 90.85
Books for Evening Schools 3.00
Books, etc., for Library
        Committee 5,389.76

TOTAL $11,901.06
    The report was adopted.

The Finance Committee also reported that the Board of Estimate having
reduced the appropriation for janitor's wages nearly $4,000, their wages
should be reduced in that ratio, with a resolution to that effect.

The President said the reduction amounted to 12 per cent.

Mr. BENNETT thought to indorse the rsolution would be to drive away
some of their best men.

Mr, ROWE said these men have everything in the way of a house free, and
are better paid than men of their position in either departments.

The report and resolution were adopted.

The Committee on Teachers reported the following resignations,

EASTERN DISTRICT OPENING OF A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING
The new building of Public School No. 19, at South 2nd. and 10th sts, will be
opened on Monday next. Since September last the pupils have been scattered
about, the primary department having been quartered at the old South 4th. st.
school, the male Grammer Department at the First Presbyterian Church, South
4th. and 6th. sts., and the female Grammer Department at the Central Baptist
Church, South 5th and 8th. sts. The new building is one of the hamdsomest of
the kind in the city, being of brick, with brownstone trimmings, and 3
stories in height, and is considerably larger then the old school, some 25
feet on either side, which was formally used for yards, being included in its
dimensions. Instead of yards there is s play ground on the ground floor. Both
teachers and scholars express much joy at the near approach of their being
together once more.
