BOARD OF EDUCATION
The Superintendent's Annual Report 
The annual report of Superintendent Thos. W. FIELD to the State
Superintendent, Neil GILMOUR, with a report to the Board, was read and
ordered printed. The following is a digest of the report:
 
1.     The number of duly licensed teachers employed and teaching at the
same time, for twenty-eight weeks or more during the school year
commencing October 1, 1877 and closing September 30, 1878, was 1,245.
 
2.     The number of children over five and under twenty-one years of
age, residing in the city on the 30th day of September, 1878, was
164,250. 
 
3.     The number of public free schools within the city was fifty-six.
 
4.     The number of private schools within the city (not including
colleges, incorporated academies or seminaries) was ___- (I have no
means of ascertaining.) 
 
5.     The number of pupils over five and under twenty-one years of age,
registered as having attended such private schools some portion of the
school year closing with September 30, 1878, was _____.  (No means of
ascertaining.) 
 
6.     The whole time the public schools were taught within the twelve
months ending September 30, 1878, was forty-one weeks and one day.
  
7.     The whole time the public schools were taught by teachers while
duly licensed during said year was forty-one weeks and one day.
  
8.     Of the teachers employed during any portion of the year the
number licensed by certificate of the (State) Superintendent  of Public
Instruction was twenty-seven.
  
9.     The number holding Normal School Diplomas was twenty-one.  The
number licensed only by local authorities was 1,258.
 
10. The number of licensed teachers who were employed in teaching during
any portion of the school year was thirty-three males and 1,272 females.
Total, 1,305.
 
11. The whole number of children of school age who attended the public
schools some portion of the year was 93,333.
 
12. The  average daily attendance of children of school age attending
the public schools was 50,695.
 
13. The whole number of days of attendance at the public schools of all
the children of school age attending said       schools was 10,330,120.
 
14.     The whole number of days on which the public schools were taught
during the school year - that is were actually open for the instruction
of the pupils, duly licensed teachers having been present each day - was 206.
 
15.     The number of holidays during the terms of school occurring on
the regular school days, but during which the schools were not taught,
was 12.
 
16.     The number of other week-days (including Saturdays) during the
terms of schools, on which schools were not taught, was 41.
 
17.     The number of volumes in the public schools libraries is 28,000;
and their present estimated value is $23,000.
 
18.     The number of school-houses is:  frame, 10; brick, 46; stone,
__; total, 56.
 
19.     The school-house sites are valued at $548,675,?53; and the
school-houses at $4,211, 877.
 
20.     The number of school-houses built during the year is none.
