School Teachers 1890-1910 Brooklyn

Looking for info on an ancestor who was a school teacher or principal in Brooklyn in the late 1800's ? Board of Education of the City of NY 110 Livingston St. Brooklyn, NY 11201. They replied (within a week!) that they did not have 19th century material & suggested I write to the Brooklyn Historical Society or Teachers' College Columbia University The Milbank Memorial Library Special Collections 525 West 120th Street New York, NY 10027 212-678-3072 I chose to write to Columbia first & received a reply in less than a month. They had reviewed the City of Brooklyn's Annual reports and found my ancestor listed as a teacher and principal in the 1870's and 1880's and sent me photocopies of the pages where she was listed (I had enclosed a small donation with my letter). They also said "For further information on the Brooklyn school system and on the roles of teachers and principals, you may wish to visit us to take a look at our holdings." Good luck & happy hunting!
