WANTED MEN FROM BADEN....1855

Following is the start of the list of wanted people from Baden extracted from
the Grossherzoglich Badisches Anzeige-Blatt for the Oberrheinkreis 1855.

Some of the names repeat from the 1854 list, because there was a change of
editorial practise between 1854 and 1855.

In 1854 "Punishments and sentences" were in a seperate index, but in 1855 they
were included with the "Wanted people" index. This means that someone who
deserted from the army or didn't report for their muster late in 1854,
reappear in 1855 with the imposition of their punishment.

If anyone recognises a name,
I can supply more information, but please be patient.

They are ordered to report here within 8 weeks, and justify their leaving without permission, otherwise their local and national rights will be declared lost, and the legal fine applied. Kenzingen, 5th March 1855. This means that they were "illegal emigrants" who left without permission and possibly leaving debts behind them. The fine would be taken from any money they may have inherited. Under Baden law all children received an equal amount of their parents estate, in land or money, which enabled the fines to be applied, assuming the parents had enough money.
