took up his residence, and there the future Captain George Edward Bryant who
was destined to give his life for his country, was born, and in later years
was State armorer of the Twenty third Regiment. To the home in the armory
he succeeded and there now, surviving him, his widow and two daughters,
Catherine and Marion.
Captain Bryant who was about 45 years old at the time of his death enlisted
in the Twenty third Regiment twenty five years ago as a member of Company F.
Later he became color sergeant. When his regiment started for the Mexican
border he was commissioned a first lieutenant. When the Twenty third
returned from the border he resigned his lieutenancy, since a State armorer
could not be a commissioned officer.
Wilson Confirms Commission.
In April 1917, he was chosen to the captaincy and President Wilson after the
Twenty third had again been sworn into Federal service, confirmed his
appointment. In October of 1917 he went to Spartanburg with his regiment,
and there conducted the regimental school in machine gunnery, at the same
time retaining the rank as captain of the Machine Gun Company, 106th
Infantry.
Captain Bryant was one of the crack shots among National Guardsmen of the
United States and an expert in small arms. He was a member of the rifle
team of the Twenty third Regiment and also of the New York State rifle team
that went to Canada and brought back the coveted Palmer trophy. In the
contest for this cup, Capt. Bryant led the members of both teams, scoring
217 hits out of 225. For this accomplishment the members of the Twenty
third Regiment, on his return, gave him a handsome clock.
When the letter arrived from Chaplain Hanscom yesterday, announcing the
death of the Captain, Mrs. Bryant was busy getting her two daughters ready
to go to the photographer, that their picture might be sent to their "daddy"
in France. The picture was not taken.
The other prominent office of the Twenty third Regiment to die with the
American Expeditionary Forces in France was Lieut.-Col. M.N. Liebman, who
held the same rank in the Twenty third Regiment.
Letter from Chaplain Hanscom.
The following is the letter received from Chaplain Hanscom that told of the
death of Capt. Bryant: "My Dear Mrs. Bryant: By the time you have received
this note you will have learned of Capt. Bryant's death, but I felt that
just a few words from the chaplain may not be amiss. Captain Bryant was
killed by a shell just outside the entrance to regimental headquarters.
Another officer, Lieut. Paris and several enlisted men were standing nearby.
Lieut. Paris was killed and the man all wounded. The news reached me a few
moments later and I was stunned by the announcement, as Capt. Bryant was a
very close friend of mine. His going has been felt very keenly by the
entire regiment even at a time when tremendous casualties were taking place.
Captain Bryant was buried to-day (the rest is missing)
