Jeremiah CALLAHAN, of the thirty-second Field Artillery, died last
Tuesday at Camp Meade, Va.  He was born in county Kery, Ireland,
thirty-two years ago and had been a resident of Brooklyn for eight
years, living at 126 Marion street. He is survived by three brothers,
Michael, John and Daniel, and two sisters, Norah and Mrs. M FITZGERALD.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. with requiem mass in the
Church of the Presentation.  Interment at Calvary Cemetery, under
direction of FEENEY & Son, of 1357 Broadway.

William X. CASSIDY, of 347 Sixth avenue, who died suddenly 
Wednesday, was in his twenty-second year and was a graduate of 
P. S. 10 and the Boy's High School.  He enlisted in the United 
States Navy, spent several months at Pelham Bay training station 
and was assigned to the U. S. S. Granite State.
He was the son of Margaret P. CASSIDY, (nee FEELY) and the late Francis
CASSIDY, and the husband of Catherine GORMAN.  He was a member of St.
Francis Xavier's R. C. Church, where a requiem high mass will be celebrated
for him at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.  Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In addition to his mother and wife, he leaves one brother, John, and three
sisters, Elizabeth, Daisie and Josephine.

Private Frank C. CARGULLO was killed in action, Sept. 27, according to
a telegram received by his mother, who lives at 87 Woodhill street, from
the War Department.  Private CARGULLO was born in Brooklyn 21 years
ago, attended P.S. 46 and was employed as a painter in the shipyards
prior to his enlistment with the Fourteenth Regiment when this country
entered the war.  He went to France with the 106th Infantry, Co. D.  Besides
his mother, he is survived by four brothers and two sisters.  One brother,
Thomas, is overseas with the 109th Infantry.

Corp. Casey was killed in action on Sept. 1 and was born Sept. 5, 1892.  He 
attended Public School 72, Maspeth, and after graduation entered the employ 
of the Edison Electric Company as a lineman.  He enlisted early in May 1917, 
in the 47th Regiment.  He was made corporal while the regiment received its 
training at Spartansburg.  he went "over the top" several times.  His father 
and four sisters reside at 1863 Palmetto Street.  His name has not yet 
appeared in the official casualty lists.

Sergeant Benjamin CHESTER, 22 years old, of 129 Alabama avenue, reported
killed in action, lived with his parents on Glenmore near Alabama avenue when
drafted.  His parents have moved to Philadelphia. A brother, Abraham, who
lives at the Alabama address, received the telegram from the War Department
last week telling of his death early in August.  Sergeant CHESTER enlisted
in the Twenty-third Regiment four years ago.  He was assigned to the 106th
Infantry, company unknown.  He was born in Russia and had been in this

SERGT. CHESTER DIES; OVER TOP FIVE TIMES
The family of Sergeant Benjamin CHESTER, of 328 Glenmore avenue,
received word from the War Department to-day that he had been killed
in action on Sept. 2.  The death occurred during an assault on the Huns'
position in Flanders.
On March 20, 1914, CHESTER, who was then 19 years old, enlisted in
the Fourteenth Regiment and was made a corporal, Aug. 6, 1915.  He
served five months on the Mexican border in 1916.
In March, 1917, he was again mustered into the Federal service and sent 
to Spartanburg where he was assigned to the 106th Infantry, Twenty-seventh
Division.  He was made grenade instructor at Camp Wadsworth, and in May,
1918, he received his orders for overseas service.  He reached France in
June and in July he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.  He was killed
when he went over the top for the fifth time.  He is survived by his mother,
father, wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Clark, Nathan
Private Nathan CLARK, of 108½ Douglass street, reported killed in action
Sept. 26, was attached to the 306th Machine Gun Battalion, Company D.
He was born in Brooklyn Aug. 31, 1894, and was a graduate of P.S. 58.
Prior to entering the service he was a chauffeur at the Brooklyn Post
Office.  He was killed in the fighting in the Argonne forest.  In a letter
dated Aug. 21, he said:
"I have seen quite a bit of France by now, and one old street in Brooklyn,
even Columbia street, looks more attractive to me than Paris and the rest
of France included, not that France is a bad place by any means, but
those old pavements of Brooklyn, with the old trolley cars running to and
fro, have become a habit."
He is survived by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

William E. CLEARY, born in Portland, Me., Dec. 8, 1876, a son of the
late Michael and Catherine CLEARY, died on Wednesday at his home, 2
Adelphi street, after a brief illness of acute nephritis.  He was
educated at Harvard University and had served several enlistments in the
U. S. Marine Corps.  His last enlistment expired in July, last, and he
was about to re-enlist when stricken ill.  He was a veteran of the
Spanish-American War, and a gunnery sergeant.  He was a member of the
Sacred Heart R. C. Church and is survived by one sister, Mrs. C. F.
KENDALL, of New Haven, Conn.  Interment in the family plot at Calvary
Cemetery under direction of William DUNIGAN & Son, 201 Park avenue.

Gave Life Bravely, With a Smile, Nurse Writes
Word that his son, William A CLEAVER. had died of wounds received in 
action, was received by Albert W. CLEAVER, of 1730 Forty-fifth street, in
a letter from the head matron of an American base hospital in Havre, France,
at the same time that Mr. Cleaver received the official word from the War
Department.  In the letter the matron said:
"He had been brought in the day before and was resting nicely until
complications arose. He died Oct. 6, bravely, like a true soldier, with a
smile on his face."
Sergeant CLEAVER enlisted in the Twenty-third Regiment in December 1915,
and served on the Mexican border.  He was mustered into the Federal service
in September 1917. A brother, Alfred, is in the Canadian Medical Corps and 
a sister, Elsie, is a yeowoman in the Navy.  Sergeant CLEAVER was
attached to Company A, 106th Infantry.
To-day's casualty list shows that two Brooklyn soldiers were killed in action,
seven died as the result of wounds and six from disease.  Of the thirteen
wounded, five were severely, three slightly and five degree undetermined.
Two Long Island boys are missing in action.

At the home of Private Henry Berthram COHAN, 553 Herkimer street, who
was killed in action Sept. 27, it was learned last night that he was only
seventeen years old when he enlisted in the Twenty-third Regiment, in
June 1916.  He served on the Mexican border and later the regiment was
merged into the 106th Infantry.  He was a member of Young Men's League
of Embury M. E. Church, where memorial services are to be conducted for
him this evening.  He is survived by his parents, Leon and Jennie COHAN,
and a brother Louis, a first-class steward in the Merchant Marine.

Private Hyman COHEN lived with his sister, Mrs. Ida ALPAS. at 329
Lafayette avenue.  He was 24 years old and was called to the colors in
January.  He went overseas with Company H, Fifty-ninth Pioneer Infantry.
He died of pneumonia Nov. 21.  His sister has received no word from
him since he entered the service.  He was born in Brooklyn and attended
the public schools.  Previous to being called for service he was engaged
in the millenery business.

Lured by the great adventure of war, Joseph Cohen, a sixteen year old
freshman in the Eastern District High School enlisted without telling his
parents soon after war was declared.  He told the recruiting officer he was
nineteen years old, his father, Nathan of 228 South First street said
yesterday and went overseas last spring with his Battery  A. Third Field
Artillery.  He died of disease in France Sept. 9.

In a letter to Mrs. Daniel CONNELLY, of 319 Seventy-eighth street, Col.
A. P. V. ANDERSON, commanding officer of the 312th Infantry, informed
her that her son, Lieut Daniel CONNELLY, was killed in action, Oct. 18.
"He died with great valor in an attack upon machine-gun nests, continuing
to advance after he had been wounded several times," Col. ANDERSON
wrote.
Lieut. CONNELLY enlisted at the outbreak of the war and finished his
training in the Officers' School at Camp Upton, after which he joined the
312th and sailed with unit for France.

The father of Private William F. Conwell, 9022 Fort Hamilton Parkway, is of
the opinion that an error has been made in the report by the War Department
that his son died of wounds.  The soldier, who is listed as Connell instead
of Conwell, wrote a letter under date of Sept. 28, the day he is reported to
have died to his father and in it made no mention whatever of having been
wounded.  He wrote that he liked the life of a soldier.  He was 20 years old
and was a member of the Twenty third regiment when it was mustered into
Federal service.  Later he was transferred to Company M, 165th Infantry.  He
was a graduate of Public School 104.  His last employment was with the Morse
Dry Dock and Repair Company as a machinist.

Sept. 29.  He was 21 and enlisted in the old Twenty-third Regiment

Private Howard Peter CRYGLER of the Marine Corps died Oct. 1 on a
United States transport while on his way to France, according to word
received by his wife.  He was born in Brooklyn twenty-three years ago,
and before entering the army, was employed as teller by the Franklin
Trust Company on Fulton street.  He wife, May, lives with her parents at
813 Fifty-sixth street.  He is survived also by his mother and father, 
three brothers and a sister.

Private Sylvester CUCCHIARO, killed in action Oct. 20, was 22 years old,
the son of Mrs. Rosie CUCCHIARO, of 102 Greenpoint avenue.  He was
born in Italy and with his widowed mother, brothers and sisters came to
America six years ago.  He became a barber and was drafted in
September 1917.  In a letter his mother received three weeks ago he
asked her to send him a Christmas box with delicacies and mentioned
what he wanted.  This box had been filled by his mother and all tied up
ready to be mailed when word came from the War Department that he
had been killed.  The mother collapsed and she has since been ill.

Corporal Edward A. CUMMINGS, a son of the late Col. Michael CUMMINGS,
Civil War veteran, and at one time department commander of the G. A. R.,
State of New York, is reported as killed in action.  Late in September he
was reported to be recovering from wounds in a French hospital.  He wrote
from the hospital to his sister, Miss Sarah C. CUMMINGS, of 2 Strong place,
that he was doing finely and added:  "I'll be home for Christmas dinner and
will go New Year's calling."
Corporal Cummings joined the Fourteenth Regiment two years ago and 
served with it on the Mexican border.  
He went to France with Company E,106th Infantry.

Although she has received no official word of the death of her son, Mrs.
Henry CUNDY , of 578 Lexington avenue, mother of Private Harry M. CUNDY, is
satisfied of his death in action, as she received a letter from his pal and
Corporal George HOLMES, stating that we was killed during an engagement on
Aug. 11.
Private CUNDY was a member of the Twenty-third of Brooklyn for several
years and saw service on the border with that outfit.  At. Camp Wadsworth he
was transferred to the 106th Infantry, Company K.  During his stay at the
camp, he took part in the musical revue, "You Know Me, Al."
He was born in Plainfield, N. J., attended the Brooklyn schools and
graduated from P.S. 44.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Before enlisting he was in the automobile business.  A brother, Thomas H.,
is ready to answer the next call to the colors.

Priv. Curran reported killed in action on Sept. 20, was born in 
Brooklyn 22 years ago, the son of the late George Curran and 
attended St. Teresa's School.  He was drafted last April and left 
for overseas last May, a member of the 310 Infantry.  He is 
survived by his mother, two brothers, John, who 
is in France, and Joseph, and two sisters May and Alice.  
He lived at 1026 Pacific Street.  Priv. Curran's name has not 
yet appeared on the official casualty list.

Private Stephen CURTIN, of 83 William Street, Long Island City, 
where he lived with his sister, Mrs. Anna Stutzbach, was 
killed in action on July 29.  He was a member of the 
165th Infantry. Private CURTIN was 24 years old.  He was 
a communicant at St. Patrick's R.C. Church at Long Island City.  
Hew came to America from Ireland six years ago.

Lieut. James F. CURTISS, Jr., of the 106th Infantry, was killed in action Oct.
20, according to word received from the War Department by his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. James F. CURTISS, of 1173 Fulton street, and by his wife and son,
of 177 West street, Flatbush.  Lieut CURTISS enlisted when a boy, in the
Fourteenth Regiment Cadet Corps and later became second lieutenant of
Company D.  He saw service on the Mexican border.
