Davis, Joseph,M.
'DIED A BRAVE SOLDIER', SAYS 'JOE' DAVIS' CHUM
"All is Well Above; I Have No Fear," One of his Last Utterances
Further details of the death of Private Joseph M. DAVIS, a son of the
late Benjamin F. DAVIS, a former superintendent of The Standard Union
press room, which as announced on Thursday, have been received by
the young private's family.
Under date of Oct. 8, a letter written by Private Delzie DEMARES, a
member of the Ninety-seventh Company, Sixth Regiment, U.S. Marine
Corps, Private Davis' company, is an account of how he fell in action.
Private DEMARES wrote:
"As requested by your son, Joseph, I am writing you these few lines.
Joe was my dear friend ever since we had been in the Ninety-seventh
Company and promised to write my folks if anything should happen to me.
"He was killed on the battlefield about 8 o'clock, Oct. 3. He and I were
in the same squad and he was about four feet from me when a machine gun
bullet entered his heart. He fell to the ground and never said a word. I took
from his person a wrist watch, a New Testament, fountain pen, some
pictures, two letter which he had written but could not send, marine
emblem and about thirteen francs. These I am going to send to you,
either through the Red Cross or bring myself. I can't say anything
about any other personal property he had, but these are all he had with
him. If you know of any other I would be very glad to see to it for you.
"Joe was always a jolly boy and great for singing. We were in the same
truck moving to the front a week ago Sunday night, and he was the leader
of the singing. I have bunked with him in trenches and woods and always
found him very good-natured. He had no bad habits and often told me
he owed it to his home and the little wife.
"As you mourn the loss of a son, I, the lost of a friend. You have given
a manly boy to a great cause, so may God's blessing be with each of you.
He died a brave soldier and the day before he died he said 'All is well
above. I have no fear.'"
Private DAVIS was born twenty-one years ago on Staten Island. He joined
the Marine Corps April 16, and was married to Miss Amanda CUBBERLY,
of New Brighton, on April 18. He is survived by his mother, three
brothers, J. Warren DAVIS, assistant foreman in The Standard Union
press room; Clarence M. and C. Arthur, and four sisters, Edith, Marion
and Mildred DAVIS and Fannie CARMICHEL, widow of the late
quartermaster.
