"SON DIED NOBLE DEATH," PRIEST WRITES FINGERS
"He died a noble death," writes Father DUFFY, chaplain of the 165th
Infantry, in a letter of condonence just receivd by Mr. and Mrs. Gustave
FINGER, of 155 Fifth avenue, describing the death of their son, Private
Frederick FINGER. He was killed in action July 29.
FINGER, who was 25 years old, enlisted about three years ago in Company
A, Fourteenth Regiment, and saw service on the Mexican border. He was
employed in the Bliss plant last year when his country called him again and
he sailed for France with the Rainbow Division. Father DUFFY's letter, dated
Sept. 24, read, in part, as follows:
"It will be a source of help to you, as it is to us who daily face a similar
fate,to know that your son died a noble death, gallantly pushing forward to meet
the enemy. His life was not spent in vain; his resoluteness helped to win a
signal victory for our side in a battle which marks a turning point in this
war, and which will help bring the world nearer a lasting peace than any event
in the last four years of strife.
""His death was sudden, but not unprepared, for he had faced it stead-
fastly since first he first enlisted he prepared himself for it religiously
by making his peace with God, and he met it with a high and gallant spirit.
"I buried him on the field where he fell -- his fittest resting place. The
cross marks his grave and the place is properly recorded."
