ITALIANS TURN OUT TO HONOR U.S. HERO
Unusual Events Attend Military Funeral of Private CHARLES H. HOLDEN
Parents Receive Comforting Letter from Holy Sister.
The death of Private Charles H. HOLDEN, which was recently unofficially
announced, is confirmed in to-days' official casualty lists. Private HOLDEN,
who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry HOLDEN, of 2168 Sixty-seventh
street, died Oct. 4, in Pase Hospital 102, "Somewhere in Italy", of
pneumonia. His father is a linotype operator in The Standard Union
composing room.
In a letter from Sister Chrysostom, chief nurse of the hospital where he
died, to the parents are given details of young HOLDEN's death. The letter
follows: "Somewhere in Italy, Oct 11, 1918.
"Dear Mrs. HOLDEN and Family:
"The object of this note is to tell you something of the last illness and
death of your dear boy, as I am sure you will appreciate a word direct from
the hospital where he passed away.
"He was admitted to our base hospital on Sept. 1, a very ill boy, having
been sick with pneumonia for days previous. From the very beginning he
seemed to realize that he was not going to recover. The only thing that
seemed to worry him was the grief it would cause his family. He said to
tell you that he loved you all, parents, brother and sister, and that he hoped
to see you again. He was glad to die a soldier, and for his country, and
though he was most anxious to get well and fight with our boys, he was
perfectly resigned to do God's holy will.
"His death on Oct. 4 caused grief and sorry among his comrades, who said
so many lovely things about him. He was buried on Oct. 6, with all military
honors. His funeral was formed of the officers and enlisted men of his
regiment, followed by some officers and enlisted men of our unit; also six
sisters of charity and forty nurses. Many of the inhabitants of the town
(illegible) many of them have been put through the bitter trials during this
war could truly sympathize with your loss. He had many beautiful floral
pieces, each design being with long, wide streamers of ribbon of our
national colors.
"One of the nurses who nursed him secured a piece of ribbon for you, and
I took one of the floral pieces which you will find enclosed. The services
at the grave were performed by a minister of your own faith. After the
service he spoke beautifully of your dear boy, and judging from all that
was said of him, he certainly must have been a dear, young man. Our
Sister De sal(illegible) charge of him during his illness said he was most
grateful to the (illegible) and the nurses for any little attention he received.
"Trusting that our dear Lord will give you and all his dear ones all grace
and strength necessary to hold up under this great trial, our (cut off)
Master has been pleased to send you in the death of your darling boy
with the heartfelt sympathy of officers, sisters and nurses of Hospital
No. 102, I remain yours respectfully,
       "SISTER CHRYSOSTOM, Chief Nurse"
Mrs.a nd Mrs. Holden are deeply touched by the evidences of kindness
shown by the nurses and sisters of charity in Italy, not only to their son,
but to other American boys who have come under their care.
In addition to his parents, Private HOLDEN is survived by a sister,
Florence V. HOLDEN, who lives in Hartford, Conn.

Corp.Co.B, 106th Inf.
Killed in action, September 27, 1918.
Sergt. Edward P. HYNES, 27 years old, of 18 Polhemus place, was
killed in action Sept. 27. He was a member of Company B, 106th
Infantry. He enlisted in the Twenty-third Regiment in June 1917, and
sailed for France May 10 on the President Lincoln. He graduated from
P. S. 128 and Poly Prep. He was a member of the Brooklyn Celtics
and took an active part in athletics at Poly Prep.
In his last letter, written Sept. 17, he said he had been "over the top"
five times and had not received a scratch. He said his company had
done wonderful work and deserved great praise.
On Nov. 12, his family received a letter, post marked Oct. 24, from an
Australian soldier, saying he had found on the field pictures and a regis-
tration card bearing Sergt HYNES' names. His family thought perhaps he
had dropped these from his picket and still had hopes of hearing further
from Sergt HYNES.
Sergt. HYNES was the son of the late John HYNES, a granite contractor.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Sarah HYNES; three sisters, Mary,
Sadie and Gertrude; and two brothers, William and Thomas.
