CORPORAL JOHNSON DIES HERO'S DEATH
Brooklyn Soldier, Leading His Company "Over the Top" Is Killed
Four Local and L.I. Men Make Supreme Sacrifice
Corporal Theodore Leigh JOHNSON died on the field of honor in France
on Sept. 27. In a letter from a comrade who saw him fall the information
came to his family nearly two weeks ago, but no official word was
received until a telegram from the War Department was received
yesterday saying he was killed in action on that date.
Corporal JOHNSON was 24 years old and was educated at P.S. 12 and
Commercial High School. On the entry of this country into the war
he enlisted in May, 1917, as a member of Troop C and sailed for France
May 17, 1919, with Company D, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, Twenty-
seventh A.E.F., receiving promotion after he had served in the tranches.
His comrade said he was killed while going "over the top" with his
company. He cried out "Come on, boys," and at that moment a bullet
or piece of shrapnel struck him in the stomach and he died instantly.
Two months after his enlistment young JOHNSON was married to
Edna L. M. EHLER, of 110 Ryerson street. He was the son of Charles
and the late Carrie JOHNSON and at the time of his enlistment he was
employed in the foreign exchange department of the Chase National
Bank, Manhattan. His family lives at 117 Sterling place.

Private John F. Jones.
Although the War Department has notified Mrs. Margaret Jones, of 764
McDonough street, that her son, Private John F. Jones, of Company B, (?)05th
Infantry, was killed in action on Sept. 14 she believes a mistake has been
made and that her son is alive and enjoying himself in Paris. The reason
for believing a mistake was made is the arrival of two letters from the boy
written since his "death", one dated Sept. 20 while in a hospital and the
other on Sept. 28, which stated he was then in Paris enjoying himself.
Previous to being called for service he was a painter. He is a graduate of
P.S. 17 and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. He is 23
years old.
