Brooklyn Mother Doubly Bereaved.
Mrs. Lange Hears of One Son's Death in France as Another Dies at Home.
Mrs. Carrie Lange, a Brooklyn mother, was prostrated by the double
bereavement in the loss of two sons in one day, or at least hearing of the
death of her eldest boy in France on the same day when her younger son died
at home. Mrs. Lange lives at 27 Weirfield street and received a telegram
from the War Department notifying her that her son, Corporal Arthur Lange,
21 years old had died of pneumonia in a French hospital. The message was
received just after the other son, Clarence had died of the same disease.
Clarence was but 19 years old, though he had been married a year, and he
leaves a widow.
When the telegram from the War Department announcing the death from disease
in France came to Mrs. Carrie Lange, the widowed mother of Corporal Arthur
Lange, his brother Clarence was lying dead in their home at 27 Weirfield
street. Corporal Lange died of pneumonia in France Sept. 27 at the age of
21 and Clarence died of bronchial pneumonia on Oct. 14. Both were born in
Manhattan but Arthur lived in Brooklyn and went to P.S. 85. He joined the
army May 1, 1917 and went to France in July. In his last letter home Arthur
spoke in the highest terms of the French people and the manner in which they
treated the American boys. He leaves one other brother, a schoolboy, and
four sisters. Clarence was 19 when he died and leaves a widow. He had been
married one year.

DIED LIKE AN AMERICAN, SAYS LARSEN'S COMRADE
Corporal Tilford LARSEN died like a true American soldier, is the word sent
by his comrade, Corporal R. WALKER, in a letter to his mother who lives at
218 Prospect avenue. Corporal WALKER's letter read in part as follows:
"I have had a lively time, but don't start to worry, as I came off lucky. The
only damage I received was a few scratches and a pair of torn breeches
from the barbed wire, but I am sorry to tell you Corporal Tilford LARSEN was
killed Sept. 29, while leading his men over the top. He was one of the
pluckiest fellow in the company. His heart was all in the game. He never
knew what it was to quit. There were very few things he slipped on and he
played the game to a finish. Up-State and down in Spartanburg he was
always soldiering and never ducked. Many a time I have gotten him out of
a detail, but he stuck to it, as it ran in the game. I certainly regret that
he was one of the good American soldiers to 'go west,' and regret that
as a comrade I have to return to the U.S. without him. I must say that he
died as he lived, a true American soldier."
