Brooklyn.

Accidentally killed by auto,July 28, 1918.

Walsh, Joseph
1877 Putnam avenue
Horseshoer Joseph Walsh, whose name appears under the head of those who died
from accident or other cause, is one of three brothers who were wounded in
the present war and one of two brothers who, after receiving wounds on the
field of battle, were later killed by accident. The address given, 1877
Putnam avenue is that of his aunt, Mrs. B. Hughes. Joseph was born in
Waterford, Ireland, thirty five years ago and came to live in Brooklyn
fifteen years ago. He enlisted in the army in 1916, saw service on the
Mexican border and went to France with the Eleventh Engineers, about the
first regiment to go across.
Soon after arriving in France he was struck by shrapnel in the side and also
received a bayonet thrust in the wrist. He met his death while driving a
truck which ran into a pole behind the lines. His companion was also killed
at the same time. Two brothers were in the British army and both were
wounded. One brother, Thomas, after having been invalided to Canada, was
riding in a train when it was wrecked and he was killed. A letter to his
aunt says Joseph is buried in Grave 54, American Plot, Chateaureaux, France.
Wounded several times in action, Private Joseph Walsh a gallant young
Irish-American soldier met death by accident in France. Walsh, who had
lived fifteen years in Brooklyn, left two brothers in Ireland, both of whom
enlisted in the British Army and mad the supreme sacrifice, one on the field
in France and the other, wounded and sent to a hospital in Canada, killed in
a train wreck.
Walsh enlisted as a horseshoer, but the Irish blood in him called for
fighting and he went to the front, where enemy shrapnel "got him." Wounded
several times, he recovered sufficiently to return to duty and drove a motor
truck close behind the fighting lines. A collision of his truck with a
telegraph pole resulted in his death as heroic as if he had fallen in battle.
Private Albert Mausner was among those "Killed in Action" and reports to his
wamily (family?) show he died as a brave man should. For fear that sudden
bad news might kill his aged parents, he gave his address when enlisting at
the home of a married sister. Mausner has six married sisters and a married
brother living in Brooklyn and a family memorial meeting was held which was
attended by every sister with their husbands and children, the brother with
his wife and babies.
