   THE WILLIAMSBURG HOMICIDE
Inquest before Coroner WHITEHILL and Jury.
The alleged murder of Thomas KENNEDY at the hands of Matthew CONNOLLY, in
the saloon of the latter, on last Saturday evening in North 5th st, a repond
of which appeared in our afternoon edition of yesterday, was last evening
investigated by Coroner WHITEHILL and a Jury in the 4th District Court, 5th
street W.D. The following is the most important testimony taken:
Dr. Joseph CREAMER, who made the postmortem examination, testified that he
examined the body of Thomas KENNEDY, and, on opening the abdominal cavity,
found evidences of recent inflammatory action, commonly known among medical
men as peritonitis; there was an amount of inflammation sufficient to
produce death; he then looked for the cause of inflammation , and found that
the bladder had been ruptured, discharging its contents into the abdominal
cavity: there was nothing to show that the bladder had been ruptured by
abnormal distension; ruptures of the bladder do not take place in the
position in which that of deceased was found; the cause of rupture in this
case he believed was direct violence; there were no extended marks of
violence; such were not necessary to prove the cause of death, as a slight
blow might have produced the rupture.
Dr, Maximillian SHEELER, who assisted at the examination, corroborated the
testimony of Dr. CREAMER, as did also Drs VAN BRACKLE, and Edward H.
DUGGAN. The latter witness saw deceased previous to death: was summoned to
visit deceased on Sunday evening about 9 o'clock; found him in a dying
condition with great debility of the stomach; he told me that he had been
kicked in the abdomen on the previous night in North 5th street; did not
say who had kicked him; he told me he believe he would die, and was
resigned to such ?result.
Mrs. Ellen KENNEDY, wife of deceased, testified that her husband came home
at five minutes past one o'clock on Sunday morning; he was stooped from
pain; he went at once to bed, and commenced groaning after taking off his
shoes and said " I'm killed, and that Mat CONNOLLY did it; he kicked me
twice in the stomach; and that the son of CONNOLLY was there: he repeated a
number of times on Sunday that "Mat CONNOLLY had killed him; he said that
Mrs.CONNOLLY was to blame for the assault upon him by the prisoner; he told
me that he must die, before saying that :CONNOLLY had killed him", he was
sensible, until within a short time before death.
One witness affirmed-- I heard from DRISCOLL that KENNEDY had attempted to
tear the clothing from the body of Mrs. CONNOLLY.
The inquest was adjourned until this evening.

The causes leading to the death of Joseph BOHNER, and the fall of the
building in Division ave, E.D, were further investigated last evening by
Coroner WHITEHALL and jury in the Fourth District Court,. 5th street.
A.V. CANNON,the builder was placed upon the stand, and testified that there
was no agreement made that he should superintend the stone work; he thought
the cellars looked very fair when finished; after the stone work had been
completed there was a thaw, which would have a tendency to soften the mortar
and weaken the bonds: If the weather had been dry he thought the walls would
have stood; he had seen worse walls.
John BRENNAN, the mason, testified that he found the stone walls all right
after the fall, and afterwards stated that there should have been better
material furnished. Witness denied to some extent a statement alleged to
have been made by him to Coroner WHITEHALL on last Wednesday, which showed
that he (the witness) had said that he found the party wall out of line
before the fall, and that SHEPPARD and CANNON had promised him $5 and plenty

that both of the men named had told him that he had better stay away from

The investigation relating to the death of MRS. MARGARETA GAMACH and
her 2 children by the late fire at the corner of Graham Avenue and Boerum,
was concluded last evening in the Fifth District Court. The testimony
produced in the case failed to hold JAMES NELSON responsible for the fire.

Several witnesses were examined, including two occupants of the
building burned, besides MR. NELSON, in whose saloon the fire orignated, the
substance of whose evidence was similar to purport to that already published,

material other than the floor and the woodwork surrounding the room: returned
about 15 minutes to 12 o"clock and then, for the first time was acquainted
with the fact that his house was on fire: as to the origin of the fire he was
loss to account for it; might have told some one that the dog he kept
probably upset the lamp, but did not recollect; did not know weather the dog
was in the saloon or cellar that night; let the dog out of the cellar the
morning following; had offered to sell out his business on different
occasions for various sums ranging from $6?2 to $1,500 and had found business
bad; suffered a loss of from 10 to 15 dollars every month, and it was for
that reason that he desired to sell; was insured for $1,800
covering stock, fixtures, and wearing apparel. On the presumption that the
gas had been turned off, and had allowed to escape, thus causing an
explosion. MR. NELSON was closely questioned, but positively asserted as did
his friend, that the gas was turned off by him at the meter before leaving
the building.
At the conculsion of the evidence the Coroner charged the jury, and
after an hour's consideration the following verdict was returned:
                                 the verdict
The jury found that deceased came to their deaths from injuries by
burns recieved at the fire on the corner of Graham Avenue and Boerum Street,
E.D., the origin of which fire they believe to have been caused by an
explosion of gas, which escaped from one of the pipes in the saloon, and
they found the means of escape from the building totally inadequate tto the
number of tenants.

 THE E. D. DISASTER
Witness denied to some extent a statement alleged to
have been made by him to Coroner WHITEHALL on last Wednesday, which showed
that he (the witness) had said that he found the party wall out of line
before the fall, and that SHEPPARD and CANNON had promised him $5 and plenty
of work to stay away for three days, but in giving his testimony he stated
that both of the men named had told him that he had better stay away from

BETZGER'S DEATH BLOW
Murder in the Sixteenth Ward-- Enraged House Painters Silence an Unwelcome Critic.
The Sixteenth Ward of Brooklyn is notorious for domestic disturbances,
felonious assaults, and murders. The second of exciting events in that
locality for the week just closed presents no less than three felonious
assaults and a murder on Saturday. The latter fearful deed, which was not
without provocation, might have been avoided had a proper indulgence been
exercised toward THE MURDERED MAN
John BETZGER, a German, aged forty-four years and a painter by occupation.
THE ORIGIN OF THE FATAL ASSAULT.
It appears that BETZGER, before receiving the fatal blow, had been drinking
freely of lager in FRIES' saloon, on Bushwick avenue near Varick street,
adjoining the new building in which the difficulty was originated, and is
owned by FRIES. Painters had been employed during the week to give the
finishing touches to the new building. Mrs. FRIES, anxious to ascertain
whether such work was being done in accordance with the contract, selected
the intoxicated and critical BETZGER, by reason of his judgment of painting,
to inspect that portion of the labor upon the building, and to give such
directions as he might think proper to the painters.Mathias KELLER, Andrew
STAKE and Julius WEGNER.
HIS PRESENCE GIVES OFFENCE
BETZGER had no sooner entered the new building then, it is said, he became
offensively critical about the painting, and in addition to ridiculing the
work, applied provoking language to the painters. They became enraged at
deceased for presuming to force his unwelcome comments upon their work, when
they had a master-painter to whom they were responsible. Unpleasant words
finally led to an assault on BETZGER by the angry painters during which the
murdered man received
a fatal blow upon the right temple, with a piece of lumber, which it is
believed was delivered by Mathias KELLER. The injured BETZGER was immediately
taken to his residence, No. 108 Bushwick avenue.
                   UNABLE TO GIVE ANTE-MORTEM STATEMENT
Coroner Whitehill having received information of the critical condition of
BETZGER proceeded to the premises named, on Saturday evening to obtain the
anti-mortem statement of the dying man, but finding BETZGER unable to utter a
word failed to accomplish the desired object.
BETZGER lingered until yesterday afternoon, when he expired, leaving a wife
and two children.
Officer SHORT succeeded in arresting and lodging in the Sixth Precinct
Station-house, KELLER, STAKE and WEGNER, the two latter being secured last
evening.
Coroner WHITEHILL and a jury last evening viewed the body of the deceased
at No. 105 Bushwick avenue, after which it was arranged to open an
investigation this evening into the causes leading to the death of deceased
in the Fifth District Court , corner of Grand snd Ewen streets.E.D.
