MISS HARRIET SILLIMAN
Her Death from Heart Failure Today, Aged 84
MIss Harriet SILLIMAN, daughter of the late Gold S. SILLIMAN, and sister of
Benjamin D. SILLIMAN, died at her residence, corner of Pierrepont and Clinton
sts, to-day. She had been suffering from an attack of pneumonia, but this
had been overcome, as it was thought, when heart failure ensued, and the end
came when it was unexpected by the members of her family. Miss SILLIMAN has
suffered for several years with a weakness of the heart, so much so as to
cause some solicitude on the part of her friends, This and her advanced age,
84, made it impossible for her to resist the inroads of the disease, which
reduced her vitality.
Miss SILLIMAN was a woman of great dignity and nobility of character. She
had many accomplishments and was well read. Her singularly sweet disposition
and high plane of living impressed every one who was honored with her
acquaintance.
Miss SILLIMAN'S father, Gold S. SILLIMAN, graduated from Yale College in
1796; her grandfather, Gen. Gold S. SILLIMAN, in 1752, while her
great-grandfather, Gen. Ebenezer SILLIMAN, graduated from the same college in
1727. Her brother, Benjamin D. SILLIMAN, graduated from Yale in the class of
1824; and has long been known and honored as one of the first citizens of Brooklyn.
During the past week three prominent Brooklyn people, all well acquainted
with each other, have passed away. These are: A.A. LOW, Mrs. POLHEMUS, and
Miss SILLIMAN.

SILLIMAN, in the 84th year of her age. Notice of funeral hereafter.

11 January 1893
DEATH OF MRS. SQUIER
Mrs. Estella Marshall SQUIER, the wife of Frank SQUIER, who died this
morning, at her residence, on Ninth ave., had been ill for several months,
and spent a portion of last summer at a near-by resort on Long Island Sound,
in the hope of recovery. For many years she was a resident of the Seventh
ward, and within a comparatively short time, had removed to a fine home
erected by Mr. SQUIER, on Ninth ave., and Carroll st., and facing Prospect
Park. Mrs. SQUIER was the daughter of the late Rev. Joseph D. MARSHALL, and
a woman of great personal worth, which endeared her to a large circle of
friends. The funeral will occur at the home, 32 Ninth ave., on Friday at noon.

RELIGIOUS SENTIMENT
Expressed in Letters Found on George D. HYDE, Who Died on the Bridge
At the beginning of the rush hours on the Bridge last evening, George D.
HYDE, aged about 45, was stricken with heart failure on the New York outgoing
platform, and after being removed to car No. 50 and conveyed the Brooklyn
waiting room, died.
HYDE was a native of Mystic, Conn., whither his body was sent in care of his
brother-in-law, E.B. BROWN by Stephen MERRITT, of New York. He had evidently
anticipated a sudden death for a letter found on his person contained the
information that he had heart disease, and gave the instructions outlined
above. A letter addressed to his brother-in-law at Mystic was mailed last
night by Sergeant Edward PHILLIPS, in accordance with a request also embodied
in the first-named missive, which terminated as follows:
For me to live is Christ. For me to die is gain.
Hallelujah to the Lamb forever and forever.
Coroner KENE reviewed the body before it was removed.

DEAD FOR DAYS
John SCHULTHEIS died nearly a week ago, but the body hasn't been buried,
as the widow had no money.
He died at 57 Moore St. in one of the two small rooms occupied by he, his
wife and six small children. The coroner was notified and gave a burial permit.
The undertaker John SCHLITZ was called and informed the widow that he would
bury the body for $15 but had to have the money paid in full. She only had
$2.50 and was unable to raise the money.
The body was left in the only bed in the apartment and at night Mrs. SCHULTHEIS
put her children to bed with their deceased father.
Finally the other families in the tenement complained about the stench and
this morning Mrs. SCHULTHEIS went to the Sixth Precinct and told her story.
She was nearly crazed and it was with difficulty that she made herself
understood. The case was referred to the health officers.

has thrown a tinge of sadness over that portion of the sixteen ward.
The fire started when little Barnett pulled a kerosene lamp off the mantel,
while looking for a buttonhook and the lamp fell into the open stove and
exploded, setting fire to the clothing of the mother and children.
Max SOLOMAN, the husband and proprietor of the paint store, at 121 Boerum
St. was removed to the hospital this morning. He was badly burned about
the face and will lose both eyes. When he learned of the death of his
family this morning, he gave signs of insanity. The Coroner will hold an
inquest this afternoon.

FOR MURDER:EDWARD GEOGHAN ON TRIAL IN THE
COURT OF OYER AND TERMINER.
Edward GEOGHAN, a truck driver, 28 years of age, was
placed on trial this morning in the Kings County Court of
OYER & TERMINER, at which Judge CULLEN is presiding, for murder in the first
degree, in having shot and killed his wife, Ellen GEOGHAN, at the residence
of her sister, Mrs. Catherine BRENNAN, 103 Wyckoff street, on the 8th day of
September last. The case is being prosecuted by District Attorney
RIDGEWAY, while Counselor MCMAHON appears for the accused.
On the day in question, GEOGHAN went to the residence
of his sister-in-law, where his wife was stopping, and
emptied the five chambers of a 32 calibre revolver at her,
two of the bullets took effect, one lodging in the woman's
head and the other in her stomach. One of the bullets, in
glancing off after striking a piece of furniture, slightly
wounded the six-months old child of the couple in the right
thigh, the burning powder from the weapon setting fire to
the child's stocking.Another bullet shattered the index
trigger finger of the murderer.GEOGHAN, after the shooting
threw the revolver into a pail of water in the kitchen and fled
from the house.Patrolman STEABOLD, who lives in the
neighborhood, heard the shots, and on going into the street,
and seeing GEOGHAN in the act of running away, started
in pursuit, and captured him after a short chase.
GEOGHAN on being taken back and being identified by his
wife as her assailant cooly denied that he had done the shooting
or had ever had a revolver; but a carving knife as sharp as a
razor, with which it is supposed he intended to finish the job
if the pistol failed, was found in his breast pocket. The couple
had been married but eighteen months, but quarrels growing
out of the husbands jealousy became so frequent that Mrs.
GEOGHAN resolved to leave her husband. The latter, she said,
had also threatened to kill her and conceived a violent hatred of
her mother.Mrs. GEOGHAN was removed to the hospital, where she died soon after.

When Patrolman Charles L. BROWN, son of Capt. William BROWN, of the
Eighth precinct, died Feb. 4, 1892, he left two widows, consequently
he was a bigamist. He lived with his first wife, Annie, at 218

children. He was a member of the police mutual aid; and his widow
was entitled to $1,000 from the association. He deserted her,
however, and married another woman, Catherine BROWN, and in his will
he left the pension fund to her, notwithstanding the fact that his
first wife after he left her, kept his assessments paid up.
Frederick L. JENKINS, the treasurer of the Police Mutual Fund
Association, paid the money over to the City Court, and both women
have sued for it, and the evidence was heard by chief Judge CLEMENT,
in the Special Term, yesterday afternoon.

ACCIDENTAL
A CORONER'S JURY DECIDES REGARDING FLORIST HILL'S DEATH
In the Eighteenth precinct station house, Forty-third street and
Fourth avenue, last night, a Coroner's jury decided that Richard HILL, the
well-known New Utrecht landscape gardener, had died on the 13th inst. from a
fracture of the skull, accidentally received.
The principal witness was Dr. COUGHLIN, the ambulance surgeon, who
attended HILL when he was brought to the transfer station of the B.C.R.R.
Co., at Sixty-fifth street and Third avenue on the evening of Feb. 4, and who
removed him to the Norwegian Deaconesses Hospital, at Forty-sixth street and
Fourth avenue. Dr. COUGHLIN said that he was the attending and house
physician of the hospital as well as the ambulance surgeon.
When HILL came into his hands the doctor thought he was suffering from
alcoholism, exposure and a few contusions. He was delirious, and kept
calling for gin all through the night. The next morning, Sunday, he raised a
disturbance, and in the afternoon was allowed to leave.
Officer George MEYERS testified that he had been called to the
hospital, and had seen HILL there. The florist did not express any desire
either to leave or to stay. Later he had raised a disturbance at the hospital
and the officer had arrested him.
Sergeant HAROLD of the Eighteenth precinct testified that George HILL,
the son of the dead man, had called at the station house before his father's
arrest. No bail had been offered, he said.
George HILL flatly contradicted the Sergeant. He had offered bail, he
said. The young man related the story of his journey home, during which he
said his father raved continually about being struck, and said something
about a policeman.
The jury found that HILL's death was due to accident, and exonerated
the police and the hospital, authorities from all blame, but recommended that
patients of a similar character get better treatment at the hospital in the future.

25 February 1893
Mrs. Mary J. HALL, 83 years of age, died at the Hempstead a few days ago.
Mrs. HALL was descended from a prominent Scotch-Irish family.

Bernard LEAVY, president of the New York and Brooklyn Brewing Company, and
brother of Matthew LEAVY, head of the brewing firm of LEAVY & BRITTON, died
last night at his residence, 203 Hewes street, of pneumonia. Mr. LEAVY had
been ill for nearly a year, and for six months past has been confined to his
bed. The funeral will take place on Monday from the Church of the
Transfiguration, Marcy avenue and Hooper street. A solemn high mass of
requiem will be celebrated. The interment will be in the family vault in
Holy Cross Cemetery at Flatbush. He leaves two sons and two daughters, all
of whom are grown up.
Bernard LEAVY was one of the most popular and prominent men in Catholic
circles in this city. He was born in County Longford, Ireland, forty-seven
years ago, and came to this country at the close of the war. He afterwards
engaged in the brewing business, and, at the time of his death, was one of
the best-known brewers in New York State. When he was president of the
Emerald Society, ten years ago, he started a fund for the erection of a new
asylum, after St. John's R. C. Orphan Asylum was burned down. He was a heavy
contributor, and succeeded in raising a large amount. He was a member of the
St. Patrick's Society, and the Constitution, Columbian and Hanover clubs, of
this city, and of the Catholic Club and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, of
New York. At last night's meeting of the St. Patrick's Society a committee

F.F. DONAVAN
Declared an Accessory to Miss Manzoni's Death.
The Coroner's Jury find that her death was caused by blood poisoning,
following a criminal operation, performed by Drs. CHASE and DINIER -
the two later held without bail.
Dr. William SAUNDERS, a witness in the inquest in the case of Maggie MANZONI,
testified this morning before Coroner SCHULTZ, of New York, that Dr. CHASE had
informed him that the girl was suffering from rheumatism. Later Dr. CHASE
admitted that the patient had been operated upon, but that the operation had
been performed before she had entered Dr. CHASE's house. Deputy Coroner O'HARE
read the report of the autopsy, and Joseph MANZONI testified as a witness.
The jury found that the girl had died from blood-poisoning, following a criminal
operation performed by Drs. CHASE and DINIER. Florence F. DONAVAN was held as an
accessory before the fact. His bail was allowed to stand, but the two physicians
were held without bail.

Robert CANNING, of 23 Hicks street, died last night without medical attendance.
He was 27 years old, and had been sick for some days.

DIED IN THE CELLAR
About 6 o'clock yesterday evening Peter McKEAGNEY, a liquor dealer of
59 Third avenue, while walking in the cellar beneath his barroom stumbled
over the dead body of Charles KUMMER whom he had employed to clean up the place
early in the afternoon. KUMMER was 50 years old and has been living at
lodging houses. His death was caused, it is supposed, by heart disease.

Leander T. POWELL died at this residence, No. 361 Clinton avenue,
at 5 o'clock this morning. He had been sick for about two weeks and for
the last two days has been in an unconscious condition. He was the only
child of David B. POWELL, President of the National City Bank, and was
forty-eight years of age at the time of his death. He was born in this
city and has always made it his home. His education entire was received
here and the young man left the Polytechnic school to go into the insurance
business. He represented for quite a time the Montauk and
Clinton Insurance Companies. On February 8, 1872, he married
Miss Rebecca B. FRANCIS, daughter of John FRANCIS, the furniture dealer on
Myrtle avenue. After his marriage Mr. POWELL began his career as a
wholesale shoe dealer. He was first a member of the firm of Aaron Smith & Co.,
until the death of Mr. SMITH, when he became associated with Robert CAMPBELL.
The firm's name was Powell & Campbell, and their place of business
was at 122 and 124 Duane street, New York. His relation with this
firm was maintained up to the time of his disease. Mr. POWELL was
well known in the shoe line and his house was one of the largest and
best known in New York.
The deceased was well known in club circles and very popular. He was a
member of the Brooklyn, Oxford and Crescent Athletic Clubs in this city and the
Lotus and Manhattan Athletic in New York.
His fondness for yachts was well known and he owned for a time the
Belle Powell, named for his daughter, which was a racer of some
note and the winner of many prizes. He sold this yacht and purchased
the David B., named for his father, which flew the flag of the
Great South Bay Yacht Club of which he was a member.
In business circles he was well known, being a director in the
National City Bank of Brooklyn and the Washington Trust Company,
of New York City. When the Brooklyn Hotel Company was organized,
Mr. PRATT was a prime factor in the work, and at the time of his death was
a director in it.
Mr. POWELL was a conscientious and hardworking business man, his only
recreation being the spending of the summer months at his handsome country
villa in Sayville, L.I., where, with his family, he sought the pleasures
given by his yacht and horses. He leaves a widow and two daughters,
Misses Belle and Ethel.
For the last two years he has been in failing health from a liver complaint,
which became complicated with other affections. He has been confined to
his house for the last six or eight weeks, his extreme vitality bearing
him over many severe attacks.
The funeral services will be held Monday, at 8pm, and the services
will be conducted by the rector of St. Luke's, and Dr. PRESCOTT, of Sayville, L.I.
The interment will be at Greenwood.

HAMILTON EXECUTED
The Negro Wife Murderer Pays The Penalty For His Crime
Sing Sing,N.Y., April 3.-- James W. HAMILTON, the colored ex-preacher, and
convicted wife murdered, died in the electric chair at 11:10 A.M. It was
10:50A.M.,
when Warden BROWN led the witnesses down to the execution chamber. There was
some delay in getting the dynamo in working order. At 11:10:30, all the
connections were made, and Warden BROWN gave the signal. A current of 1,740
volts turned on, and the victim in the chair jumped upward strainingat the
straps,and remained rigid.
The current was left on for sixty seconds and then turned off. The physicians
stepped forward, listened for the heart-beats, and felt for the pulse. They
declared the subject dead at 11:13:10. The electrocution differed from all
its predecessors,in that only one shock was given. There was no scorching or
scalding of the skin,or steaming at the electrodes, and while the man was
above the medium height and of massive build, it was evideat that death was
instantaneous. Such was the verdict of all who were present, who had seen
former executions in the electric chair.
HAMILTON murdered his wife, whose maiden name was Annie BROOKS, on the
night of May 1,1892. She was the second woman to whom he had been married.
The body was found by two pedlers in a pond half way between Newtown and
Winfield,L.I., with a horrible gash in her throat. A bloody razor and pieces
of a broken cane were found near by. These bits of evidence played an
important part in the trail.
The woman's husband was arrested on suspicion by Capt.HAN?E, of the Flushing
police.HAMILTON had been driven out of many churches for swindling.

FOUR ARE DEAD - Father and Three Children Carried Off in a Single Week.
The father of the household and three children dead in a week- that is
the pathetic record of the FRIERY family, who live in meagre quarters on the
second floor of the tenement, 80 Canton street. Crowds and crowds of people
came to the little home on Saturday evening and Sunday to view the bodies of
the eldest son and two daughters, who ten days ago were in good health, and
Sunday afternoon three black hearses, one following the other, carried away
the remains to Holy Cross Cemetery.
James FRIERY, the father, was 66 years old,and was employed as foreman
in the stables of Hetfield & Ducker, the cracker manufacturers, on lower
Fulton street.
He had been for forty years a resident of the First ward, and was well known
there.
Andrew FRIERY, the oldest son, worked in a furrier's establishment in
NewYork City. Andrew fell sick Saturday,March 18. A bad cold settled on his
lungs, and in less than a week he died. This event occurred Friday,March 24.
The funeral services were held last Monday.
Mary LOCKHART, a widowed daughter, had been suffering with kidney
disease, and the shock of her father's death proved too much for her enfeebled
frame. She expired of heart failure two or three days after the body of her
father was laid in the cemetery.
Andrew FRIERY also fell sick, and quickley developed symptoms of
pneumonia. He was followed by his sister Maggie, who had contracted a cold on
the very day of the father's funeral while accompanying the remains to the
grave. The son died at10 o'clock last Friday morning, and his sister the same
evening between 8 and 9. The four-fold calamity was a terrible blow to the
remaining children. There are six of these, five of them grown-up,and all
living in the one little tenement home.
The Rev.Dr.Donaldson, of St.Edward's R.C.Church, conducted the services
yesterday morning and mass was said for the souls of the dead today.

DR. CHILDS DEAD
Dr.William H.CHILDS,who was taken to New York Hospital last night from 151
West Thirty-fifth street, suffering from opium poisoning, died this morning
at 7 o'clock.Dr.CHILDS was 33 years old, and came from Pittsburg. For a week
he had been living at the above number, in the flat of Mrs.Olive JARDINE. At
10:30 last night Mrs.JARDINE's colored servant went to the West Thirtieth
street station, and asked that an ambulance be sent to the house to remove a
sick man.
Dr.CHAMBERLAIN, of NewYork Hospital, found CHILDS suffering from an overdose
of morphine. He was unconscious when taken to the hospital.
Mrs.JARDINE said that Dr.CHILDS had taken an opiate at 7 o'clock. It had no
effect and an hour later he took a heavy dose of morphine. The drug produced
such an effect that Mrs.JARDINE sent for Dr.DALLAS, of 85 West Thirty-sixth
street, who failed to arouse Dr.CHILDS. Then the ambulance was summoned.
Dr.DALLAS said that Dr.CHILDS had taken the overdose by accident.
Mrs.JARDINE'S flat is locked up to-day.The Coroner will investigate.

SICK AND MONEYLESS, FRANK RILEY ENDS HIS LIFE
Watchman O'BRIEN, of the Atlantic Dock,Erie Basin, noticed a poorly-dressed
young man standing on the dock yesterday evening. Suddenly the man leaped
into the water, and before O'BRIEN reached the stringpiece he had vanished
beneath the surface. He did not reappear, but an old white straw hat,
floating on the water, marked the spot where he had gone down. The officers of
the patrol boat, Judge Moore, were notified, and a search for the body
instituted. It was found some three hours later near the dock. About 4
o'clock this morning, Mrs RILEY, of 252 Van Brunt street, identified the
corpse as that of her husband,Frank RILEY, and it was removed to her home.
RILEY, who has been ill, has been very despondent of late.He would not get

DEBARRED
Two Sisters Refused Admission to View a Dead Body.
Coroner KENE was called upon last night by a Mrs.KANE,of 237 Thirty-sixth
street, who informed him that her sister, Mrs.Annie HOWARD, had died at her
home,330 Pearl street, and she believed that her death was caused by her
husband's brutality; that her body was full of bruises.
Word was sent to the First precinct station house by Deputy Coroner KELLY,
and he was then informed that Mr.HOWARD had applied at that station for
protection from two sister's of his wife.
The names of the sisters are Mrs.BENNETT and Mrs.KANE, both of whom are
known to the police. Police Captain CAMPBELL says that some years ago the
BENNETT woman lived on Bridge street and was driven away by him.She then
located in a house on State street, which the police afterwards raided.
Mrs.HOWARD, who had always borne a good name, would have nothing to do with
her sisters during her lifetime.
She died on Wednesday from pneumonia, following an attack of ''grip''.
Dr.CRUIKSHANK attended her and sent a certificate of death to the Health
Department.
After her death the two sisters came to the house and tried to get in.They
were refused admittance by Mr.HOWARD, and immediately began to raise a
disturbance. HOWARD went to the station house and applied for protection. A
policeman was sent there to preserve the peace, and both women went away. The
funeral took place at 1 o'clock to-day.
Coroner KENE says he will investigate Mrs.KANE'S story, but he has
confidence in Dr.CRUIKSHANK,who declares there is no reason to believe that
Mrs. HOWARD had been subjected to any ill-treatment at the hands of her husband.

after they had gone ashore,a deck hand found the stranger lying on the

AWFUL DEATH
A Machinist Crushed Beyond Recognition by a Trolley Car
Arthur ROGERSON, a young machinist in the employ of the Brooklyn City
Railroad Company, met with a frightful death last night. At midnight,
Clarence SOTIELD, of 137 Vermilyea street, was walking along Third avenue. In
front of the carhouse, between Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth streets, he
noticed a dark form lying just beyond the gutter. He leaned over the figure,
and was horrified to discover that it was that of a dead man. The man's head
was crushed, and his face so battered that recognition was impossible. The
rough overalls that he wore were blood-stained, and there was a trail of bloo
d leading into the carhouse.
SOFIELD cried out involuntarily, and the cry brought several of the stable
hands to his assistance. The body was carried into the carhouse, where it was
identified as that of young ROGERSON.
When last seen alive, the young machinist was crawling under a car, the
machinery of which needed oiling. It is supposed that the current was not
turned off, and that the car started suddenly, that the young man's head was

THREE DEAD
Terrible Result of a Tenement House Fire
In a frightful tenement housefire at 892 Broadway, in the Eastern District,
late yesterday afternoon, a mother and her two children were actually roasted
alive. Other inmates of the house were terribly burned in making their escape
from the burning structure, but as yet only the following are dead:
Mrs.William AINSWORTH, 37 years old: Harry AINSWORTH, 7 years old, and Annie
AINSWORTH, 2 years old. Josie AINSWORTH, 4 years old, is in St.Catharine's
Hospital, where it was stated at noon to-day that the chances are good for
her recovery. Little Josie was partly suffocated and burned about the face
and hands.
It was alittle before 6o'clock last night when a man, passing by 892
Broadway, rushed into Charles FUCHRER'S saloon, which is located on the
ground floor of the building, and told them that the place was on fire.
FUEHRER ran upstairs, where he saw volumes of smoke coming out of the
apartments occupied by Mrs.Kate ADAMS. He first opened the door, and saw
Mrs.ADAMS working hard trying to extinguish a small blaze.
Suddenly, and as if by magic, the whole place was enveloped in flames.
FUEHRER yelled up the stairway to the familes above ,that the place was on
fire, and then he and Mrs.ADAMS made their way down the stairway to the
street. Mrs.ADA'S hair was all ablaze when she reached the street, but the
fire was quickly smothered.
The top floor of the building was tenanted by William AINSWORTH, an
electrician, with his wife Mary, and four children.
John BOCK,and his wife, Eva, and John KEANER, his wife and three children,
occupied rooms in the second and third flats.
Thomas FAGAN, a policean attached to the Vernon avenue station, was on the
roof of a neighboring building at the time, and he called out to
Mrs.AINSWORTH to make her way to the front of the building, and that the
firemen would take her down.Mrs.AINSWORTH started with the three children,
and tried to make her way through the smoke and flames. She evidently only
got as far as the next room, where she and her children were overcome by the
smoke. Here the three unfortunates were actually roasted alive.
Nearly five minutes were lost by the firemen in cutting down the telegraph
and electric light wires, which prevented them from raising ladders, as the
wires passed near the building. Finally, when ladders had been raised, one
brave fireman entered the building, and quickly returned with Josie. She was
still alive, and was taken to St.Catharine's Hospital.
The next trip of the fireman in the building resulted in finding the body
of Mrs. AINSWORTH. It was terribly burned and was removed to Moflat &
Kramer's law offices, at 814 Broadway. Then the bodies of the AINSWORTH
children were taken out of the building. They were also badly burned and
flesh dropped off as they were taken away.
Coroner CREAMER will hold an inquest in the case some time to-day at
Mrs.FORD'S residence, 984 Myrtle avenue. She is a sister of Mrs.AINSWORTH.
The bodies of the unfortunates were taken to Vernon avenue station last
night, and this morning they were removed to Mrs.FORD'S.
The damage to the building at 892 Broadway is not over $6,000. It is owned
by Henry MONDAY, of 311 Third avenue, and is pronounced by all to be a
veritable fire trap.

SHOT HERSELF - Mrs.HARRIS a Suicide Beside Her Husband's Coffin
Mrs.Oscar J.HARRIS, formerly of this city, shot herself through the heart
yesterday at New Haven, Conn. The cause of her action was grief at the death
of her husband, which occurred on Wednesday, as the result of a surgical
operation.
When Mr.HARRIS' condition was found to be such that the operation of
laparotomy would have to be resorted to. Mrs.HARRIS openly declared that
schould the operation prove fatal, she would kill herself.
Although few of her friends thought that she would carry out her
threat, yet she was closely watched. That Mrs.HARRIS' threat was not an idle
one was proved yesterday at noon, when a pistol shot rang through the house.A
servant rushed to the parlor, and found the body of her mistress lying
lifeless at the casket side, a tiny stream of blood flowing from a wound in
the left breast. A pistol ball had ended the young widow's grief.
Oscar J.HARRIS went to New Haven from this city last January with his
bride of less than a year. He was 36 years and his wife was 29. HARRIS made a
great many friends and became president of the law and collection firm of
Snow,Church&Co., of that city. He became prominent not only in mercantile
circles but in society.
An intestinal trouble became so severe two weeks ago that his physicians
declared that the only chance of saving the patient's life was by the
operation of laparotomy.
Mrs.HARRIS appreciated the danger that attended the use of the surgeons
knives, but consented to have her husband taken to the New Haven Hospital,
where the operation was to be performed.
''Remember'' said Mrs.HARRIS, when she had the conversation with the
physicians,''that if the operation terminates fatally I will kill myself.''
The physicians endeavored to reassure her, and thought they had done so. Mr
HARRIS was then removed to the hospital and the operation was performed, but
the patient did not have sufficent vitality to recover from the operation, and
died yesterday.
The duty of telling Mrs.HARRIS of her husband's death devolved upon a
hospital attendant. When she heard the news she broke down and cried:''oh,
I'LL kill myself; oh. I'll kill myself. My poor Oscar, my poor Oscar.'' A
physician was called in and tried to quiet the distracted woman. In the
meanwhile, the dead body of her husband was brought home and placed in the
parlor.
Mrs.HARRIS yesterday morning seemed much calmer. The servant who had
closely attended her seemed confident that her mistress would not carry out
her threat and left her alone for a few moments. The servent was not out of
the room two minutes when Mrs.HARRIS killed herself.
People who rushed into the room found Mrs.HARRIS lying near the body of
her husband, her right hand grasping the stock of a smoking revolver. The
bullet had passed through her heart, coming out in the back. She died without
speaking. The weapon with which she killed herself was one which her husband
had kept in a bureau.
It was discovered last evening that Mrs.HARRIS yesterday wrote letters of
farewell to all her friends and her husband's partner, Fred W.BALDWIN. In one
of the letters she disposed of a $2,000 life insurance policy, which would
have come to her by her husband's death.
Mrs.HARRIS maiden name was Frauces DANYKE, and she was well known in
Brooklyn's social circle. Her husband leaves a father and three brothers.
The bodies will be brought to this city this evening, and will be taken to
KUHIKE'S undertaking establishment, 154 Court street, where they will remain
until Sunday, when the funeral services will be held.

MURDER - A Young Italian Fatally Wounds Two Women.
What will probably prove a double murder took place last evening in Harris
court, a small alley running half a block from Front street between Adams and
Washington streets. The houses in this court are occupied by Italians, over
forty families being huddled together in the half dozen houses in the court.
James PAVARA lived with his wife and mother-in-law. Matalina CASTAQUELLA,
on the second floor of No.2. PAVARA had complained of being sick for some
time, and made this an excuse for not working. His business was that of night
seavenger. His wife and mother-in-law consulted several doctors, and had the
young man examined to find out what ailed him.Every doctor appealed to
declared that the young man had nothing the matter with him,his only aliment
being laziness.
Last evening, while the three were at supper, the mother-in-law told
PAVARA that if he would not work he would have to get out of the house, and a
quarrel ensued. Mrs.CUSTAQUELLA grew very angry, and taking a small mattress
up from the floor, told Pauara to ''take up his bed and walk''.
This angered the young man very much, so he whipped out a 42-calibre
self-cocking revolver from his hip pocket and fired a shot at his
mother-in-law, wounding her in the arm a little above the wrist. The women
both ran out screaming into the hallway, followed by PAVARN.
Frincesco VERAGINO, a tenant, occupying an adjoining room, hearing the
pistol shot, ran out into the hallway, and seeing the danger the women were
in, pulled them into his apartment. As he did so,PAVARA fired two more shots
in rapid succession, one of the bullets taking effect in Mrs.CASTAQUELLA'S
right breast.
VERAGINO then slammed the door of his room shutting the women in. PAVARA
then ran downstairs with the revolver still in his hand, and was met on the
landing by Emanuella DONADO, a woman about 60 years of age. She tried to
impede his passage and threw her arms around him with the intention of
detaining him, then he placed the pistol close to her breast and fired. The
old woman fell in a heap to the floor of the hallway, and PAVARA made one
more attempt to make his escape. At the main doorway he was met by a man
named Pasquale PORZIO, who knew him well. PORZIO is a well-built man, and
caught hold of PAVARA with iron grasp. A struggle began between the two men,
and PAVARA suceeded in relasing himself. He darted down the courtyard like a
deer, and ran directly into the arms of Policeman KEEBAN, of the Second
precinct, who had heard the shots and was on his way to the scene.
Great excitement prevailed among the Italians as the news spread. An
ambulance call was sounded and Surgeon KENT responded. Both women were
removed to the hospital.
Mrs.DONADA only lingered a few hours after her arrival. Mrs.CUSTAQUELLA
will probably die. Coroner KENE was notified and will hold an inquest.
PAVARA was taken before Justice WALSH today, charged with murder in the
first degree and felonious assault. Counselor CARAO entered a plea of not
guity and the hearing was set down for Monday.

IN A BATHTUB,
Mrs.HODGES Drowns Herself While Alone in Her Apartments.
Mrs.Alice HODGES, wife of Charles E.HODGES, of 615 St.Marks avenue,
committed suicide yesterday at her home by drowning herself in the bathtub on
the fourth floor of the building, which is an apartment house.
Her lifeless body was discovered about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and the
discovery was brought about by the fact that the water had overflowed in the
bathtub, and had leaked through the flooring into the apartments below.
Mr.HODGES is manager for Barnard & Co., the sporting goods merchanes of
Bond street, New York. Yesterday morning he left home at 7 o'clock, and his
wife at that time seemed in the best of spirts. She was left alone in the
apartments, as her servants had left only a few days before. About an hour
after her husband's departure
Mrs. HODGES was seen by a domestic named Ellen RYAN, employed by the family
living on the floor above, but so far as is known, she was not seen
afterwards by anyone.
When the water began to drop from the ceiling of the third floor the
bellboy, Joseph HESSFORD, was sent for, to inquire the cause. The boy ran
upstairs, but found all the doors locked in the HODGES apartment. He then
summoned Edson E. JANNING, the janitor and engineer of the flats, who forced
open the door and went to the bathroom to ascertain the trouble. The bathroom
door was also locked, and he burst it open.
A volume of gas came pouring from the room as the door was opened, he
entered the bathroom, raised the windows leading to the airshaft, and turned
off the gas.Looking into the bathtub, he saw Mrs.HODGE'S body lying under the
water, nude. She was dead, and apparently had been for some hours.
On examining the bathroom, it was found that every crevice had been stopped
up with rags, showing a determination on the part of the deceased to end her

committed suicide about 7o'clock this morning, at his home,108 West
Washington place,New York. He cut his throat on the roof and then jumped into
the street below, a distance of three and one-half stories.
Some time after 6 o'clock this morning BUCHANAN arose from bed and dressed
himself. He told his wife that he was not feeling well and was going to the
roof. His wife told him that the cold morning air would hurt him. He replied
that he thought it would brighten him up, and then left the room.

street, was walking along West Washington place. He saw a man standing on the
edge of a roof at No.108.The man drew a razor across his throat and jumped
from the roof.He struck the railing on the stoop and bounced out on the
pavement. The frightened boy ran around the corner for a policeman, who came
hurriedly to the scene. Just as the ambulance arrived with a surgeon from
St.Vincent's Hospital.BUCHANAN drew his last breath.

A FATAL SLIP
A fatal accident occurred last evening on the Atlantic Avenue Railroad, the
victim being Mary MALLON,a servant,36 years old, residing at 515 St.Marks
avenue. She was standing on the platform on the southeast corner of
Vanderbilt avenue and Atlantic, waiting for the east-bound train, when her
attention was attracted to something.Turning suddenly, she slipped from the
platform to the track just as a wild-cat engine hove in sight.
The engine was upon her before she could get out of the way,and the wheels
passed over both legs, mangling them horribly.
The womanws lifted tenderly from her position by two policemen who
witnessed the accident, and was taken in an ambulance to the Seney Hospital.
It was evident to the physicians that the women could not live,so Coroner
KENE was notified to come and take anti-mortem statement.

placed under arrest, and were held to-day by Justice HAGGERTY to await the

BURIED IN RUINS
Two Children Were Injured,One of Them Fatally.
Several workmen have been engaged during the past-two days in tearing down
an old building located at the corner of Bushwick avenue and Forest street,
in the Eastern District.
The children of the locality have been around the place in large
numbers, gathering bits of wood which they carried away to their homes to be
used as firewood.
This morning, while a number of them were running about outside the
building, gathering up the pieces that the workmen threw away, one of the
walls collapsed suddenly,at about 11 o'clock,and two children,were buried
beneath the ruins; one of them injured fatally.
The names of the children were Louis GIBFUE,9 years old,of 10 Montieth
street and Lillian GROVES,10years old,759 Broadway. Both were taken in an
ambulance to St.Catherine's Hospital. The boy's lower jaw was found to be
frctured, and he was injured internally, although it is thought that he will
recover. The little girl also had her jaw fractured, and was injured so
seriously internally that it is the opinion of the hospital attendants that
she will live but a few hours.
Some of the other children who were near when the wall fell, were hurt by
the debris, though none of them received serious injuries, and on the apperance
of the police they ran away to their homes.
People who were in the vicinity when the accident occurred, assert that the
accident was due to the carelessness of the workmen, who had not ''shored
up'' the structure properity.
  No arrest have been made.

(New York Yimes)
July 4th Accident
Edward OSBORG, nineteen years old, of 231 Stuyvesant Avenue, Brooklyn,
was killed by the explosion of a lead-pipe cannon which he had made for
celebration purposes.
About 9 o'clock yesterday morning OSBORG and a number of other boys
took the cannon to a vacant lot opposite his home, where it was loaded with
powder. OSBORG packed the powder tightly, and then lit the fuse. It did not
seem to burn, and, after waiting several minutes, he took up the cannon and
looked down the muzzle. Instantly it exploded and tore off the upper part of
his skull. OSBORG was blown twenty feet away. His mother witnessed the
accident from her house and fainted.
The boys crowded about OSBORG, but did not have the courage to carry
him home. A policeman summoned an ambulance from St. Mary's Hospital, but
the surgeon advised his removal to his own house. OSBORG was taken into the
house and lingered until noon, when he died. He did not recover
consciousness after he was shot.
