The awful results of the Penny Bridge Collaps..Hugh MARKEY'S body was found

Fully a thousand people are lined along the banks of Newtown Creek, in the
vicinity if Penny Bridge, at Meeker Avenue to day. They are watching four
men and a diver, who were grappling and searching for the victims of Friday
night's bridge disaster, whenn 100 employees of Queens County factories were
tumbled into the cold waters of the creek. Thus far five bodies have been
recovered. At least four men and perhaps more are still missing. Two are in
St. Catharine's Hospital in a critical condition. At noon today the
following revised list of the dead and missing have been compiled.

All night long Isaac OLSEN and a gang of men in small boats moved up and down
the creek in the vicinity of the bridge, dragging big grappling irons and
hooks. A number of times they thought they had hold of another body, but
when the books were pulled up they discovered that they were mistaken. Late
Saturday afternoon the men hooked up the bodies of Con CONNAN and Briody and
yesterday they found the bodies of COOK and BLUM.
It was shortly after 10 o'clock this morning when OLSEN hooked the fifth
body. He was dragging the creek near an old raft of logs where, by the way,
all the bodies have been found, when he shouted:
"Boys, I have got hold of another one this time, sure."
OLSEN was right, and in a few minutes another body was brought to the shore
and turned face upward. It was at once identified by Patrick CRILLY, of 115
Meeker ave., who shouted as he rushed up:
"That's my cousin, Hugh MARKEY. Poor boy he had worked for the chemical
people four years and was doing well.
MARKEY'S body was removed to Conway's Morgue in Long Island City. This
afternoon it will be taken to his late home, at 182 Van Pelt street.
John O'BRIEN a submarine diver of 145 Rockaway ave., began work at this
bridge this morning. He will make a careful search of the bottom of the
creek, and endeavor to find the other bodies. The jury empanelled by Coroner
STRONG, of Long Island City visited the scene of the diaster this morning,
and inspected the surroundings. A temporary foot bridge has been constructed
across the creek. A float has been subsituted for the part of the bridge
that broke down.
