DR. D.A. GORTON DEAD IN HIS 84th YEAR
Father of "Eugenic Twins" Passes Away at Home in Eastern Parkway
ILL ONLY A SHORT TIME
Married Secretary, Less Than Half His Age, Five Years Ago.
Dr. David Allyn GORTON, father of the famous "Eugenic Twins," died yesterday
at his home, 257 Eastern Parkway, in his eighty-fourth year. The twins, who
were born when he was in his eighty-first year, are David Allyn, Jr. and Leonora.

Dr. GORTON, who was the founder of the Eugenic Society of America, had been
ill only a short time. A few moments before he breathed his last he turned
to his wife and said: "I will now tread the pathway of God."

Immediately after his death, acting on one of his last wishes, his will was
read. In addition to disposing of considerable property, he had directed
that his body be cremated and the ashes mingled with those of his mother,
which are now in an urn in a cemetery in New Woodstock, NY.

Married His Secretary.
Although he had long been prominent for his advocacy of eugenics and was a
Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, in addition to being widely known
as a writer on medical subjects, Dr. GORTON came into public notice when he
married his secretary, Miss Bertha REHBEIN, in 1911. She was less than half
his age, and before marrying her he carefully studied her family history. At
the time it was said that the unusual wedding was a romance, but Dr. GORTON
discussed the union scientifically with his wife before marriage, and they
decided that it should be a practical test of his eugenic theories. On April
25, 1912, about a year after they were married, the twins were born.
Dr. GORTON was twice married and by his first wife was the father of three
children, two girls and a boy. The former are dead, but his son, who is Dr.
Elliot GORDON, of Summit, NJ., survives him.
Author and Editor.
Until he retired from active editorial work in 1886 to devote all his time to
writing and eugenics, Dr. GORDON was for many year years editor of the
"National Quarterly Review," and was also editor of the "Medical Times," a
monthly publication. He was the author of several books, one of which,
"History of Medicine," aroused wide discussion years ago. Others of his
best-known books are "Chips from an Eugenic Workshop" and "The Natural
History of a Family."
Dr. GORTON was proud of the fact that although deeply religious, he never had
a religion. He left instructions that there should be no religious
ceremonial at his funeral, which will consist of addresses by the Rev. A.D.
SMITH, an independent minister; Dr. H.W. MERTON, and Judge Lyman A. SETTEL,
all old friends of his. The funeral will take place at his late home Friday
at 2 P.M.
It was said to-day that the "eugenic twins" would be brought up in the
strictest observance of their father's theories, which would be followed
until they were fully grown.
