DERANGED MAN HANGS HIMSELF TO HIS BED Despondent because of ill health and becoming suddenly mentally unbalanced, Christopher SOUTHOFF, a bookkeeper, 32 years old, of 180 Linden street, Ridgewood, hanged himself to the head of his bed with a cord from his bathrobe and was found strangled to death yesterday by his wife, Mary. Milford R. HARPER, of 461 Van Buren street, died suddenly at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., last Wednesday. He was recording secretary of Union Council, No. 25, Junior Order United American Mechanics, which office he had held for five years. He also was Past Councillor and one of the most prominent workers of the council. He was twenty-six years old, and was married to Alice C. HART, on June 4, 1917. He formerly lived for some time at 263 Ridgewood avenue. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Bushwick avenue, near Greene avenue. On Aug. 27, he and his brother William, entered the service at Camp Gordon, Georgia. The two were transferred to the Machine Gun Training School at Camp Hancock, and were well along with their studies when MILFORD was suddenly taken ill on Sunday, Oct. 27. On account of the influenza he was immediately ordered to the hospital, where it was observed that pneumonia had set in, and he died Wednesday night. He is survived by his widow; his mother, Alice A. HARPER, and three brothers, William, Roland, now in the service of the Government somewhere in France, and recovering from wounds received at Chateau- Thierry, and Everett. SULLIVAN, 17 years old, of 200 Centre street, was held without bail to-day for examination Wednesday by Magistrate WALSH in Fifth Avenue Court. John HEINRICH, 29, of 329 Eighteenth street, was shot within a half block of the Fifth avenue station when he remonstrated with a gang of ruffians who were beating an unknown man. Policemen and detectives followed the gang, and were almost on them, when they heard another shot, and saw a man who later proved to be William FITZSIMMONS, 17, of 174 Fourteenth street, fall to the ground. He had been shot through the abdomen and died instantly. ARGUES WITH GERMAN, DIES OF BULLET WOUND An argument on peace talk resulted fatally last night to Victor ZMTRIKEWICH, 38, of Barren Island, who died in St. Mary's Hospital from a bullet would. Victor and a German, also employed on the island, according to the police, argued several days ago on the war and peace, and yesterday afternoon they resumed it. The German, the police say, pulled a revolver and shot Victor in the abdomen. WOMAN, 80, FOUND DEAD; GAS JETS TURNED ON Mary R. KNAPP, 80 years old, of 711 Putnam avenue, was found dead in bed yesterday with the gas jets turned on. The body was discovered by Mary CLARK, a domestic employed by the family. The woman was pronounced dead by Dr. RICH, her nephew, who lived with her. James CONNORS, 40 years old, of 989 Nostrand avenue yesterday was found dead sitting in a chair in a bedroom by Mrs. BAKER of the same address. He rented the room from Mrs. BAKER, who said he had been ill for the past few days. The body was taken to the Kings County morgue. H. W. WEED KILLED IN BRIGHTON WRECK H. W. WEED, one of the victims of the Brighton Beach train wreck on Friday night, was for ten years director of employment for nearly all of the Riker & Liggett stores. Mr. WEED owned a home at 1912 Avenue H and was on his way to his family when he met his untimely death. When Mr. WEED started for home on Friday he was in the prime of life and the best of health. He was a man of strong religious principles, clean in his conversation and his life. SHEA, the oldest moving-picture actor int he country in years of service, died suddenly yesterday of heart disease at his home, 351 Lafayette avenue. He was born in Dumfries, Scotland fifty-six years ago, a son of Thomas SHEA, who was with Farragut in the battle of New Orleans, where he was wounded. He came to Brooklyn when less than a year old, and was educated in the public schools of this borough. His first amateur success was such that at the age of eighteen years he accepted an engagement with Col. John W. Albaugh's stock company in Albany. For the next twenty-five years his experience was varied and with important organization. He supported such stars as Maggie MITCHELL, Edwin BOOTH, Joseph JEFFERSON and a score of others. During the 80's he became well know as an Irish singer and dancer. He had played more than four thousand parts in moving pictures. Margaret REILLY, who died on Tuesday at her home, 109 Nevins street, was born in Ireland sixty-eight years ago and had lived in Brooklyn for thirty-four years. Catherine CLARK, who died on Monday at her home, 160 Wolcott street, was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, and had been a resident of Brooklyn for fourteen years. She was a parishioner of Visitation R. C. Church, and is survived by her husband, John; two daughters, Mary and Delia; a son, William; two sisters, Mrs. Luke KELLY and Mrs. F. G. PARKER, and four brothers John, Thomas, Patrick and Martin GRIFFIN. The funeral will be held to-morrow at 2:30 P.M. with interment at St. John's Cemetery, under direction of Edward H. C. DUNN, 339 Court street. James J. McNAMARA, who died on Tuesday at his home, 112 Nostrand avenue, was a son of Mary O'BRIEN and the late Simon McNAMARA. He was formerly a member of St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Kent and Willoughby avenues, and was a pupil of its parochial school. Mr. McNAMARA is survived, in addition to his mother, by three sisters, Mr. P. SHAW and Martha and Agnes. HARKINS, who was killed by a trolley car on Monday, was born in Ireland eighty years ago, and had been a resident of Brooklyn for more than sixty years. She was a member of the GOLDEN STAR, and is survived by three sons, Albert, James and Henry; three daughters, Mrs. M. MURRAY, Mrs. Esther GREEN and Mrs. Gertrude McCOACH. Church, officiating. Interment to-morrow at 3 P.M. at Greenwood Cemetery under direction of Richard D. HOLMES, of 1320 St. Marks avenue. William L. McGEORGE. formerly Mayor of Corning, N. Y., died yesterday of pneumonia at the Mansion House, 137 Hicks street. The body afterward was removed to the home of his sister, Mr. J. M. LEE, at 29 West 113th street, Manhattan. Mr. McGEORGE was born in Corning fifty-six years ago and he made that city his home for many years. Twenty years ago he was elected its Mayor on he Republican ticket. He was in the glass business and was a member of the Order of Masons and a widower. Wilbur C. MASON, in the awning and shade manufacturing business at 223 Livingston street, died at his home at that address on Tuesday. He was born in Brooklyn on May 15, 1888, and is survived by his widow, Margaret; his father, Isaac D., and a brother, Isaac, Jr. The Rev. L. W. HARKNESS of St. Michael's P. E. Julia O'KEEFE, who died on Tuesday after a short illness at her home, 379 Degraw street, was born in Brooklyn twenty-three years ago, and was a member of St. Agnes' R. C. Church. John WISBAUER died yesterday at his home, 1028 Jefferson avenue. He was born in the Eastern District thirty-nine years ago, and was a button manu- facturer. Peter Arnold BRAEME, whose home was at 69 Yarmouth street, Woodhaven, died on Tuesday at Camp McLellan, Anniston, Ala., of pneumonia. He was born in Brooklyn twenty-one years ago and had lived in Woodhaven for seven years. Before entering the army he was employed by the telephone company. Two days before he was to sail for France he was taken ill. He is survived by his parents, a brother, Robert, and a sister, Josephine. He was engaged to be married to Miss Loretta LITT. DOWNEY, born in Brooklyn fifty-four years ago, and a lifelong resident of the Bushwick section, died on Tuesday at her home, 244 Stockholm street. She was a member of St. Brigid's R. C. Frank ARDITO, who died yesterday at his home, 456 Halsey street, of pneumonia, was born in Italy on March 22, 1890, and had been a resident of Brooklyn for twenty-two years. HUSBAND AND WIFE DIED OF INFLUENZA A double funeral was held to-day for Mr. and Mrs. George LITTLEFIELD, of 714 Halsey street, both victims of the influenza. Interment was made at the Palisades Cemetery, Weehawken, N. J. When Mr. LITTLEFIELD, who was chief engineer of Merritt & Chapman Wrecking Co., was taken ill with influenza, his wife undertook to care for him, although she was suffering with the same complaint at the time. When he died last Saturday, she was very ill and pneumonia developed rapidly. Mrs. LITTLEFIELD was born in Manhattan, a daughter of Louis and Helene MATTHAEL. She is survived by two small children, her mother and a brother, Hans E. MATTHAEL, who is in the United States Army in France.
