WOMAN KILLED WHEN COLLISION OVERTURNS TAXI
Skull Fractured in Crash on New Utrecht Avenue
Friends Escape Injury - DRIVER HELD
Mildred ANDERSON, 25 years old, of 37 St. Marks Avenue, was killed when
the taxi in which she was riding with friends overturned at Seventy-Ninth
Street and New Utrecht Avenue about midnight last night.
The taxi was struck by a machine driven by a man described as Harry
ADLER, 38, of 2263 East Fifth Street who was taking members of his family to
a wedding.
Miss ANDERSON, a clerk for an insurance company, was in the taxi with
Hazel MITCHEL, 28, of 657 Fifty Second Street and Harvick STRAND, 28, a
painter, of 511 Seventh Avenue. They were to meet another friend and go to
Coney Island.
The taxi, driven by William A. CAIN, of 471 Fifty Second Street, was
going south on New Utrecht Avenue when ADLER'S sedan struck it in the rear
wheel. As the taxi overturned, Miss ANDERSON fell out of the window,
striking her head. She sustained a fractured skull and was dead on the
arrival of Dr. SCHMIERER, of United Israel Zion Hospital.
Miss MITCHEL and STRAND were shaken up in the accident but otherwise not
injured. Miss MITCHEL, however, became hysterical when informed her friend
of fifteen years was dead. "Why couldn't it be me instead?", she cried.
ADLER, questioned by Detective FITZSIMMMONS, of Bath Beach Station, was
arrested on a technical charge of homicide.

Mrs. VOORHEES, 104, Dies in Her New Jersey Home
Lived in One Section All Her Life - Was Tea Drinker - Ill but Three Times
Asbury Park, June 30 -- Mrs. Matilda BEDLE VOORHEES, who would have been 105
years old next Friday, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William
H. HEYER, of Hazlett, near here. Until last Thursday when she was stricken
with a weak spell, Mrs. VOORHEES was able to be around the house and she
looked forward to entertaining her relatives on her birthday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday at the home of Mrs.
HEYER and later they will be held in St. John's Methodist Episcopal Church in
South Keyport. The Rev. Henry JOHNSON will officiate. Burial will be in

Mrs. VOORHEES was born on July 6, 1823, and had lived in or near Hazlett
all of her life. Her twin sister died at the age of 87. Last Christmas, she
held a member of the fifth generation on her knee and described the first
Christmas she remembered. She was dressed homespun and went to church in a
sleigh drawn by oxen she said.
"I am no prude", Mrs. VOORHEES is reported to have said last Christmas.
"The younger generation is not half so bad as it is pictured. I think
automobiles are wonderful and airplanes and dirigibles thrill me. I would
like to go up in the air with LINDBERGH.
"People have lost the art of getting the full measure of joy out of
Christmas. They don't have Yule logs any more because the fireplaces are too
small and the logs are too scarce. They don't have sleighbells because cars
run so smoothly the bells would not jingle"
Mrs. VOORHEES had only been treated by a doctor three times in her life,
twice for pneumonia and once for a throat infection. Last spring she
received $500. from Sir Charles HIGHAM, of the India Tea Growers Association
as the oldest living tea drinker. Tea was her strongest beverage.
Mrs. VOORHEES joined the Methodist Episcopal Church when she was 15 and
had taught a Sunday school class in the South Keyport Church until she was
80. She was a Republican and cast her first ballot in 1920. Her husband
died when he was 63 years old.
Surviving Mrs. VOORHEES are two great-great grandchildren, twenty-one
great grandchildren, fifteen grandchildren and one daughter. The daughter is
the only survivor of nine children.

Start Three Inquiries in Fatal Trolley Crash
Technical Charge of Manslaughter Made Against Injured Motorman of Bergen
Street Car
Three investigations continued today into the causes of the trolley
crash at St. John's place and Ralph Avenue last night, when one man was
killed, a motorman and a woman seriously hurt and forty others injured.
A technical charge of manslaughter was ordered placed against Martin
JOYCE, 26 years old, of 23 Albany avenue, motorman of the Bergen street car,
who is in Kings County Hospital with both feet crushed, his right shoulder
fractured and internals hurt and a possible fractured skull.
In Ward 9 of the hospital it was said he had spent a comparatively
comfortable night, but that his condition was critical.
Michael KERN, assistant district attorney, said today he had talked with
JOYCE, a motorman of the Bergen street car, at the Kings County Hospital.
JOYCE, he said, at first declared he could not remember whether he had set
the switch on the turn. Then he remembered, according to KERN, that he had
neglected to set the switch by hand and that he had seen it from the platform
when he was ten feet away. JOYCE also remembered that he had increased the
speed of the car, Mr. KERN said.
Under regulations of the B.M.T. a motorman leaves the switch as he has
placed it. It is the duty of the next motorman to change the switch to suit
his purpose.JOYCE DIDN'T LEAVE CAR
Inspectors for the Transit Commission in a report to Chief Engineer William
C. LANCASTER, today revealed there was no evidence to show that Joyce had
left his platform to set the switch at the curve.
The report also revealed the car had been inspected on June 23 and found
in good condition and that the switch also was in good condition. The switch
is a hand one and not electric, as has been stated.
In their investigation the Transit Commission inspectors learned that
GOOLD had been killed by the falling fire alarm box which crashed when struck
by the St. John's place car after the latter car had been shunted off the
rails by the Bergen street car.
First reports said GOOLD was standing beside Motorman JOYCE when the
accident occurred. With the new version he was apparently waiting for a car
when he was killed. WOMAN MAY RECOVER
Also in the Kings County Hospital is Lillian AVNET, 30, of 2031 East
29th street, who was taken to Bushwick Hospital with lacerations of the left
leg and left eye. Later she was transferred to the county hospital where in
Ward 23 today she is showing much improvement.
Most of the other passengers injured are suffering contusions and
abrasions of the legs. Sixteen were taken to various hospitals.
Funeral arrangements are being made for Julius GOOLD, 40 a butcher waiting
for a car when he was instantly killed. GOOLD is survived by his widow Dora
and two children, Paul 13 and Helen 11. He was identified by his brother
Louis GOOLD, of 411 Bristol street.
THINK SWITCH HALF OPEN
In their investigation, the police say they believe the switch at St.
John's Place and Ralph avenue was half open. They said it was the duty of
trolley motormen to inspect the switch before taking cars over it.

Heart Attack Kills Man Motoring With Friend
Seized with a heart attack, John BOLES, 55, years old, of 161 Huntington
street, died suddenly yesterday while riding in an automobile driven by John
CROMPTON, 909 Eighty fourth street, at Ocean parkway and Avenue N. He was
dead when Dr. O'BRIEN arrived from Coney Island Hospital
Woman Dies of Injuries By Hit and Run Driver
Mrs. Augusta CARLSON, 50 years old of 543 Seventy-ninth street died
yesterday at her home from injuries received the previous day when she was
struck by a hit-and- run driver.
While attempting to cross Seventh avenue, Mrs. CARLSON was struck by the
machine and thrown to one side of the roadway. The driver escaped after a
chase of several miles by a passing motorist who saw the accident. The
license number of the auto was not learned. Detectives Michael DWYER and H.
MC QUILLEN of the Fort Hamilton station, are working on the case.
2,500 at UALE Burial; Women Sob at Rites
Wife, Hysterical, Tries to Hurl Self on Grave-- Mountain of Flowers About Vault
As the $15,000. silver casket was lowered slowly in the grave, Mrs. Maria
UALE, the slain gangster's wife, broke from the restraining hold of relatives
and attempted to hurl herself into the steel and concrete vault which claimed
her husband's body.
With 2,500 mourners and scores of politicians at Holy Cross Cemetery, the
body of Frank UALE was placed in its resting place today.
The situation was further intensified by the presence of UALE's second wife,
Mrs. Lucelda UALE. The two women had battled bitterly for possession of the
body, with Mrs. Maria UALE being officially recognized.
The Italian colony between Borough Park and Bath Beach declared a holiday.
Stores were closed and flags were at half mass. Fifteen thousand men and
women, boys and girls thronged the vicinity of St. Rosalia's R.C. Church at
sixty third street and Fourteenth avenue where a solemn requiem mass was celebrated.
It was to this church, a small stucco building holding only
600 persons that Uale gave a contribution of $6500 to its building fund. In
this neighborhood he was a king, a hero. Even the children talked about him.
Many praise UALE.
Those who could not get in told what a good man Frankie had been to them.
They knew where he lived at the tenement house at 6605 Fourteenth avenue.
They went to him to settle their arguments and disputes. He gave them money
with which to pay overdue rent. He was in the nature of a political boss,
but with a power that was far reaching into the depths of the underworld.
At the church too, the police were on guard. Inspector Edward SHELVEY,
Deputy Inspector Cornilus CARMODY, and Acting Captain Edward LAWLOR, of the
Bath Beach station directed the activities of four lieutenants, nine
sergeants and fifty patrolmen. About seventy five detectives mingled with
the crowd.
One of the floral pieces, about four feet long, was inscribed "We'll see
them, kid". Police thought a threat was implied. Another had the inscription
" good-bye old timer" and still another, "Sympathy, friend"
Deputy Inspector CARMODY said police identified about 47 gangsters who were
standing in groups in front of the church before the funeral cortege arrived.
At first they refused to move, but gentle persuasion on the part of the
police won out. There was no trouble.
The gangsters who arrived in high powered, expensive automobiles, came in two
delegations, the police said, one headed by "Little Augie" PISANO, probably
successor to UALE and the other by "Louis the Wolf" of Harlem.
UALE's name as a $1500. contributor toward the building of the parochial
school is still on the signboard in front of the church. A gold star,
meaning that he has paid his contribution in along side of his name. He had
increased his contribution recently by giving $5,000. more.
The celebrant of the mass was the Rev. A.S. SCIOFFI, pastor of the church.
He was assisted by the Rev. Henry PARASGANDOLA, deacon, and the Rev. Eugene
GIANNINI, sub deacon.
VESEY GRILLED AT INQUIRY ON SENTER MURDER WAS SEEN IN HEATED DISPUTE
WITH BOOTLEG PARTNER NIGHT BEFORE BODY WAS FOUND, THEY SAY
Harry VESEY, 28 years old, of 47 Java street is being called upon today
by the police to prove he knows nothing about the murder of James "Hickey" SENTER.
VESEY, according to the police, was a close associate of SENTER and with
him carried on a business of bootlegging in "real" beer. Information brought
to the police has it that, the night before SENTER's body was found, SENTER
and VESEY were seen walking along Manhattan avenue apparently engaged in a
heated dispute. Nobody has been found who could disclose what was the topic
of the argument. The police however, are determined to learn from VESEY the
nature of the dispute he had with SENTER and what he knows of the movements
of SENTER on the night before his body was found. VESEY was taken into
custody yesterday by Detectives STERN and CLAUER at Greenpoint and Manhattan
avenues. NO STRANGER TO MURDER CHARGES
VESEY is no stranger to accusations of murder. A year ago, he was tried
for the murder of John DOMBROSKI, a Greenpoint saloon keeper. A jury at the
first trial disagreed on a verdict, while at a second trial he was acquitted.
In 1924, he was arrested for the murder of "Spuds" MC CABLE, also a
well-known character and saloon keeper in the Greenpoint section. This
charge was dismissed. He was also taken into custody in connection with the
murder of MORRISSEY, in Manhattan, but nothing ever came of this arrest.
The police were looking for Vesey n connection with the murder of
DOMBROSKI when in 1925, he was arrested in Newark on a charge of robbery.
The Newark police did not have sufficient evidence against VESEY in the
charge of robbery. He was surrendered to the Brooklyn police to be tried for
the murder of DOMBROSKI.
In 1918, VESEY received a suspended sentence on a charge of assault, and
in 1920 a charge of grand larceny against him was dismissed.
SENTER' MOTHER TELLS OF SLAIN SON'S CHARITY
Always Bounteous to Little Children She Declares and Faithful to Religion
There is also a tender feeling in the hardest kind of a character.
And so it was with James "Hickey" SENTER, of 247 Kent street, whose body
was found riddled with shots in a vacant lot at Porter and Meeker avenues.
Between sobs, his mother Marie, told of his kindness to the little
children in the neighborhood, how they would stop him on the street as he
left his home and get money and candy from him.
And, expecting the attack of the youngsters, he would always supply
himself with change and candies.
There was another habit that SENTER had that made his mother cry as she
spoke of him.
Never would he leave the house without taking with him his rosary beads
and a crucifix. Often he would forget these and would return to his home to
get them. No matter where he was, as soon as he discovered he had forgotten
his rosary beads and crucifix he would return home for them.
"Often he would say he would have no luck without his beads", said his
brother, Joseph, between sobs. He had many human interest traits that often
showed themselves. Many an unfortunate man would depend on Jim for a night's
lodging and something to eat. And they were never refused.
I have seen him leave the house late at night to look up some derelict,
when he heard the man had been around looking for him. He wanted to make
everyone happy and his thoughtS were often for others. He would give those
who were up against it his last penny. If he didn't have any money, he would
borrow it, so these unfortunates would be comfortable.
"The children will certainly miss him. They will miss the candies and
the money he used to hand out to them. Their "Uncle Jim" is no more."

Find New Clue in Slaying of James Senter
Police arrest Suspect in Sandpit Murder after Throngs Attend Funeral of
Victim - No Bail for Vesey
While the police attended as interested spectators, if not invited guests,
the funeral of "James Hickey" SENTER, whose bullet ridden body was found in a
sandpit in Cherry street between Porter and Meeker avenues, Greenpoint,
Tuesday morning a second man described as Edward JACOBS, a printer of 332
Rogers avenue, was being questioned in connection with the murder today.
The funeral of SENTER, or SANTORA, was not as elaborate as that of
Frangie UALE, yesterday, when thousands of persons lined the streets to watch
a showy cortege go by that bore the body of the leader in gangdom.
Nevertheless, Capt. Joseph BETZ, of Greenpoint station, had his
uniformed men and Capt. Daniel J. CAREY, in charge of detectives, had his men
scattered about while the funeral procession went from SENTER's home 227 Kent
street, to St. Anthony's R.C. Church, Manhattan avenue and Milton street and
thence to Calvary Cemetery.
JACOBS was arrested shortly after midnight while he was wiping his car
in a garage at Nostrand avenue and Sullivan place. Detectives CLAUER,
STERN,SYMTHE,and MEENAHAN, of the Thirteenth District, were planted in visit
for him. They had learned that immediately after SENTER's death, he took a
hurried trip to Sullivan County. Yesterday they received a wire saying he
was on his way back.HAS POLICE RECORD
JACOBS, who the police say has a record that encompasses bootlegging
rather than printing as an occupation expressed surprise when told of
SENTER's death. He knew nothing about it, he said, as he was out of town.
He is a brother of William JACOBS, president of the Greenpoint Branch of the
Longshoremen's Union.
Edward JACOBS' record, the police say, includes a term in Elmira
Reformatory for mischievous conduct as a boy. In 1909 he was sent to
Sing Sing for four years. In 1920 he was discharged on a grand larceny charge
and in 1920 he was discharged on a complaint that he had endangered the
morals of a minor. After being placed in the lineup at police headquarters,
he was taken to Homicide Court for a hearing there.
VESEY Held Without Bail
The first man arrested in connection with the case, Harry VESEY, 28, of
47 Java street, was yesterday held without bail on the charge of firing the shots.
The police charge VESEY was the last man known to have been with SENTER.
They said witnesses would be produced to swear that the men, arguing
loudly, passed along Manhattan avenue, near Greenpoint avenue, between 10 and
11 o'clock Monday night. VESEY, who has been arrested three times before on
murder charges, denied the charge in court.
Guard Against Untoward Act
In the meantime, Inspector John D. COUGHLIN in charge of Manhattan
detectives, bent every effort to forestall any untoward act that might be
involved in the floral threat. "We'll see them, kid", in gilt letters on a
satin ribbon across a column of roses, which formed a center piece in the
UALE funeral yesterday.
Anthony CARASANO, friend of the dead gangster, better known as "Little
Augie the Wop", were in the hands of Detectives John BRODERICK and four
strong armed colleagues who followed them home from the funeral. The five
members of the UALE gang flashed past a traffic signal at Canal street and
the Bowery, Manhattan. BRODERICK's car overtook them in Baxter street just
off Lafayette street.
CARASANO, who was the manager of the UALE funeral, and his companions
were invited to police headquarters, where they were fingerprinted and their
records brought out.
They knew nothing of value in the hunt for UALE's murderer and were released.
MILITARY FUNERAL WITH FIRING SQUAD FOR JACK PHILLIPS
U.S.W.V. and Elks Services at Late Home of Sewer Pipe King
Full military honors, it was announced today, will be accorded John M.
PHILLIPS, alleged head of the Queens Sewer King, who died Tuesday at Atlantic
City, at his funeral services to be conducted from Holy Redeemer R.C. Church,
Freeport, tomorrow.
A requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rev. John O'TOOLE, pastor of
the church and long a friend of PHILLIPS. A firing squad and bugler from
Fort Totten will be at the grave, with a detachment of Spanish-American war
veterans. The casket will be draped with an American flag from Rafferty
Camp, United Spanish War Veterans.
PHILLIPS' body was returned to Freeport last night after a torturous
motor trip through holiday crowds. The ride resulted in the complete
collapse of Mrs. PHILLIPS and she was taken from her car to her room, where
she is under the care of a physician and is denied to all callers.
Those who accompanied the body were PHILLIPS' son, Francis, his
daughter, Helen, and several friends including ex-Assemblyman Andrew ZORN,
Peter B. CAMPBELL, Thomas CALDICOTT and George FRENZ. Those who awaited the
cortege at Freeport included Joseph PHILLIPS, a brother, Frederick CURRAN,
his secretary; Mrs. John BOSSERT, Henry VOLLMER, Jr., Andrew CAPLIS, Albert
DECKER, Mrs. Gloria PYFFE and Mrs. Jennie FEELEY.
PHILLIPS' death brings an automatic dismissal of the indictments pending
against him as an outcome of the investigation in the Queens sewer scandal,
close friends assert. His death will not affect the prosecution of Borough
President Maurice B. CONNOLLY and Frederick B. SEELEY, ex-engineer of the
Queens sewer bureau, according to those close to Emory R. BUCKNER, special
deputy attorney general in charge of the prosecution.
PHILLIPS had not been expected to aid the prosecution and his death does
not weaken their case, it was said. The suit brought by the Federal
government for back income taxes will be carried on against Phillips' estate,
however, it is believed.
Spanish War Veterans and the Freeport Elks, led by Exalted Ruler Matthew
J. MERRITT, will conduct their services at the PHILLIPS' home tomorrow night.
Following the church services on Saturday, the body will be interred in
the PHILLIPS' family vault, constructed last year at a cost of $50,000 in
Calvary Cemetery.

Report on Death of Phillips Not Denied by Doctor
His Own Physician Comments of Atlantic City Diagnosis as Alcoholism
Jack PHILLIPS' personal physician last night declared himself unable to
deny the sensational reports that the Queens sewer pipe king died of acute
alcoholism.
Mr. PHILLIPS had hardly been buried in his expensive mausoleum at
Calvary Cemetery yesterday afternoon when revelations came from Atlantic
City, where he died on July 3.
A transcript of the death record, and a report of Dr. V.E. JOHNSON were
produced by Frank J. HARROLD, chief detective at the famous resort. Both
documents attributed the politician salesman's death to acute alcoholism.
In No Position to Deny It
Dr. Louis H. TAYLOR, of 180 Academy street, Long Island City, PHILLIPS'
personal physician, was informed of the reports last night. He was asked if
he was in a position to affirm or deny the Atlantic City statement of the case.
Dr. TAYLOR said in part:
"I am not in a position to deny it. I wasn't there and don't know what
he died of. I hadn't seen him for five days. He was always a man to imbibe
against my advice. But I was treating him for kidney trouble".
What Dr. JOHNSON Said.
This is a portion of Dr. JOHNSON's Report:
"I saw him for his last illness on June 27.
"I found him in a state of alcoholic intoxication. A nurse was put on
the case, but he refused to take any medication or to stop drinking.
He continued to drink every day until his fatal day when I saw him early
in the morning of July 3, and he became unconscious a short while later,
about 8 A.M. and never reacted from the state of unconsciousness and died at
3 P.M."
The Atlantic City doctor asserted that alcoholism was the cause of death
and that contributing causes were myocarditis and pyonephritis.
Has Imposing Funeral.
More than 300 persons visited the mausoleum where PHILLIPS was interred
yesterday and passed through it after the funeral cortege left.
The funeral cortege consisted of fifty automobiles, seven of which were
filled with flowers. In addition to a brief service by Father John LANAGAN,
chaplain of the cemetery, there were military services in behalf of the
Spanish War Veterans.
PARENTS OFFER UP PRAYERS FOR 3 SONS BELIEVED DROWNED
Police Asked to Search for Brothers Missing from Manhattan Beach
Prayers will be offered today for the safety of three of the five sons of Mr.
And Mrs. Paul OLENDER, 180 North Tenth street, who have been missing since
they went swimming at Oriental Point of Manhattan Beach last Tuesday.
The three missing boys are Anthony, 13 years old, Louis, 12, and
Alexander, 8. With their brothers, Charles 18 and John 15, they went
swimming late Tuesday afternoon. After enjoying a vigorous dip they laid on
the sand while Charles and John went to a nearby store. When John and Charles
returned the three younger boys were absent. The two thought the lads had
gone for a walk, or possibly been taken for a ride in a motorboat, and for
sometime did not seek for them.
When their absence became alarming Charles, who is an excellent swimmer,
dove for two hours in search of the boys' bodies. His frantic search
revealed nothing. He and John put the boys' clothing in a safe place and
came to the Sheepshead Bay police station where they reported the three as
missing. They then went home and told their parents of the lads'
disappearance.
Yesterday the entire family went to the beach seeking clues to the
whereabouts of the missing lads. Their search was fruitless.
{Following story appears 8 July 1928}
Bodies of 3 Brothers Return to Sad Home
Waters Give Up Wracked Frames of Boys Who Drowned While Bathing.
In the modest OLENDER home, at 180 N. Tenth street, yesterday, sad-faced
parents and brothers mourned over three small bodies. They were the remains
of Anthony, 13, Ludwig, 12, and Alexander, 9, who were drowned off Oriental
Point, Manhattan Beach, Tuesday.
The sea washed up the three little forms Friday night and yesterday.
Anthony's body was found at Seaside Park, Friday night. He was identified by
a signet ring his mother, Rose, had given him for his birthday, and by his
bathing suit, on the breast of which was the family initial, a large "O".
Yesterday morning the body of Ludwig was found in the water off Rockaway
Point by Peter PASSOYNE, of 11 North Park drive, West Orange, N.J., who was
fishing. He pulled the body aboard his boat and brought it to the pier at
Rockaway Point where it was put in charge of Patrolman CRIESS, of the
Rockaway Beach station.
Even before the positive identification of the boy's distracted mother,
the body was recognized as that of one of the OLENDER brothers. Like
Anthony, he wore a blue suit with the initial "O" on it.
Alexander's body was picked up by police of the Marine Division off
Norfolk court, Manhattan Beach, near the spot where he was drowned.
Five Brothers in Bathing.
The three boys had been bathing off Oriental Point Tuesday in company of
their elder brothers, John, 15 and Charles, 18. After a swim, Charles and
John went to a candy stand. On their return, they were unable to find their
brothers.
Charles, to allay his parents' alarm, told them that his brothers were
fully clothed when they disappeared, and their absence was reported to the
Missing Person's Bureau. On Wednesday, however, the family visited the beach
and made a futile search for the trio, whereupon Charles, who had been
delegated to take care of his brothers tearfully admitted that when he last
saw them they were in the water. He produced a pile of clothing, which he
had found and hid after their disappearance.
Beach Dangerous.
The bathing beach at Oriental Point, which is open to the public is
dangerous, there being a steep channel about forty feet from shore. The
channel is unmarked and a trap to the unwary. In the past even experienced
swimmers, suddenly plunged into the depths, have become confused and some
have drowned. The OLENDER boys, it is said, were not good swimmers.
"It's all my fault," wept the remorseful Charles. "If I could only
bring them back to life, I'd never let them out of my sight again."

causes that marked the observance of the Fourth of July. Several Brooklynites
were among those reported to have lost their lives while swimming.
Three drownings, which occurred Tuesday, were revealed yesterday when an 18
year-old boy tearfully brought an armful of clothing to his home at 180 North
Tenth street. They had belonged to his three brothers, Louis 12, Alexander
9, and Anthony 13 years old. The three, with their eldest brother Charles
and a fifth brother John, they had bidden their mother, Mrs. Rose OLENDER,
goodbye late Tuesday afternoon and set out for Oriental Point, Manhattan Beach.
After the swim, Charles and John went to a nearby candy store. When they
returned the three other lads could not be found. Charles reported the boys'
disappearance but to soothe his mother, said they were fully dressed when he
last saw them. Yesterday the family returned to the beach were further
search proved fruitless and Charles confessed that the boys were in the water
when they disappeared.

Kills Wife, Shoots Boarder, Turns Revolver on Himself
Morris DE MAER, Estranged Front Family, Ends Differences by Murder -
In Hospital, May Die
Running amuck with two revolvers, Morris DE NAER shot and killed his
wife, Anna, 37 years old, of 415 Forty-fifty street, wounded a boarder in her
home, and then turned one of the revolvers on himself and wounded himself so
badly it is doubted if he will live to face the murder charge which was
placed against him at Norwegian Hospital soon after the shooting today.
DE NAER, who was recently in court on his wife's complaint that he had
been annoying her with visits, although they had agreed to live apart, went
to the boarding house which Mrs. DE NAER conducted to support herself and two
children, Andrew, 17 years old and Angeline, 18.
Mrs. DE NAER was busy getting breakfast for her boarders, when her
husband entered the kitchen.
KILLED WITHOUT WARNING
"Why don't you stay away from here and leave me alone," asked Mrs. DE NAER.
"I'll stay from here all right and so will you," he replied as he
produced two .32 calibre revolvers and began shooting.
Mrs. DE NAER ran screaming toward the front of the house. During the
flight she was struck four times, three bullets penetrating her chest and one
going through the heart.
The noise of the shooting aroused Andrew and two boarders, Charles THEYS
and Oscar MORRISSON. They hurried to the first floor and arrived just in
time to see DE NAER turn one of the weapons on himself.
FIRED AT RANDOM
Their shouts attracted his attention and despite the fact that he had
shot himself in the chest and the right temple, he continued firing at
whatever mark he could find.
MORRISSON and Andrew rushed behind a piano, but THEYS was slow in his
attempt to join them and was struck by four bullets, two in the right hand,
one in the shoulder and the fourth on the jaw.
Andrew and MORRISSON ran to the street as the shooting abated and called
police from Fourth avenue station. Ambulances from Norwegian and United
Isreal-Zion Hospitals responded. Mrs. DE NAER died as she was being placed
in the latter ambulance.
DE NAER and THEYS were taken to Norwegian Hospital, where it is said the
former will probably die within the day.
According to Andrew, his mother wed D NAER several years ago, following
the death of his father, her first husband. The couple got along well for a
time but two years ago decided to separate. Andrew's sister, Angeline, is in
New Jersey on a vacation.
LOONAN Checks Up On Youth's Charge of Police Shooting-
Inspector Joseph LOONAN, in charge of the Eleventh Division today began
an official investigation into the charges made by Antonio DE VIVO, 17 years
old, of 47 Lafayette street, that Patrolman Frederick SCHWERDTFEGER, of
Classon avenue station, had fired the shots on July 4, which resulted in the
death of Mrs. Jennie RICCI, 50, of 224 Tillary street.
Detective William KENNA, of Poplar street station, also was at work on
the case in trying to determine who shot Mrs. RICCI, who was sitting in front
of her home on the night of July 4 and who died in Brooklyn Hospital
yesterday. The patrolman is reported to have been exhonerated by Assistant
District Attorney Michael KERN.
DE VIVO was arrested, Wednesday night in a garage at 68 Prince street
after a chase of several blocks by the patrolman. The chase led past the
place where Mrs. RICCI was sitting. Yesterday afternoon Supreme Court
Justice Byrne released the youth in $3500 bail on a charge of felonious
assault. No pistol was found on him at the time of the arrest and he denied
he ever possessed such a weapon.
But the patrolman said he saw DE VIVO, at Navy and Tillary streets, and
that DE VIVO was shooting a pistol, evidently in celebration of Independence
Day. The policeman says he chased DE VIVO, and that the youth fired three
shots, apparently into the air, somewhere near the RICCI home, which is
between Navy street and Hudson avenue. SCHWERDTFEGER, who does not charge
that the youth shot at him while being chased, admitted he himself fired two
shots after the youth at about the same place, and three more shots at
Tillary street and Hudson avenue which would be beyond the RICCI home.
The shooting, the policeman admitted, took place about 6:30 p.m. which
was about the time Mrs. RICCI was shot.
Another person was wounded by a stray bullet near the same spot the same
night, but this occurred about an hour later, according to the police, and
had nothing to do with the SCHWERDTFEGER-DE VIVO chase. This victim was
Louis PIERNO, 19, of 102 North Oxford street, who was taken to Cumberland
Hospital with a bullet in the leg.

Boy Rescues Chum; Attempt to Save Another Fails
Edward RAHOE, 14, Dives Until Exhausted in Effort to Bring Up Body.
A fourteen year old boy, Edward RAHOE, of 147 Huron street, saved one of
his playmates from drowning and then dove until he was exhausted to recover
the body of a second youth in the East River off the foot of Dupont street
yesterday.
The drowned boy is Charles KULCZYNSKI, 9, of 97 Dupont street, captain of
a youthful ball team of the neighborhood. Charles drowned while Edward was
struggling to get John ARLIN, 14, of 90 Eagle street, to safety.
The boys had been playing baseball in Greenpoint Park, on Franklin
street. Warm from their exertion, a swim was proposed.
The lads rushed to the waters and disported for more than an hour. John
became weary and was resting on the dock when he heard Charles cry for help.
He dove in, raced to the spot and managed to grapple with the boy. John
fought off Charles' embraces and tried to bring him to shore. Both boys
cried for help as they repeatedly went beneath the surface.
Edward heard their cries and also swam to the fatal spot. He managed to
separate the pair and battled through the water with John. He reached the
dock and willing hands lifted John to the pier.
Edward them churned about and went to the spot where he had last seen
Charles. No head bobbed above the water and John dove repeatedly. His
efforts were futile.
Patrolman Richard SINNOTT was called and after calling the marine
division grappled without success for the body.
