BORO WOMEN put in Practice Free Cooking School Hints
Mrs. CROSS Promises to Head Standard Union Course Again.
Thousands of women in Brooklyn and Long Island today are beginning to put
into practice the week's cooking course given by the Standard Union Free
Cooking School at the Elks Auditorium, Boerum place and Livingston street.
And several hundred of those who attended are enjoying the prizes which they
won; the hundreds of baskets of provisions, the bouquets of flowers and best
of all, the major gifts awarded yesterday at the closing session when the
lucky holder of the winning numbers were presented with a kitchen cabinet,
gas range, electric refrigerator, percolator set, breakfast table and chairs,
handsome secretary desk and many other prizes.
Regrets were expressed by many on the slips of paper handed up for questions
each day, that the school must at last come to a close and all the pleasure
of the sociable, instructive hours be ended.
"But I shall be with you again, next year," said Mrs. Lilla Pauline CROSS,
expert dietitian, who has conducted the school for several years for the
Standard Union.
One interested listener for several afternoons was Gerard DEAN, of 2041
Fifty-third street, an elderly gentleman who with his wife sat right down in
front so as not to miss any of the instructions.
Asked what he had taken the greatest enjoyment in and what he intended to try
out at home he declared "the chocolate cake was about the best."
    CHOCOLATE CAKE THE BEST
He was serious, but his sense of humor bubbled over for a moment and he
added, "I though maybe Mrs. CROSS would give a recipe for a good strong
prohibition punch."
