THE RED BALL ORIGINATED IN BROOKLYN
The Park Department has recently received many requests
for information regarding the history of the "Red Ball" symbol which us used
to inform the public that ice skating areas are open for use.
The following is a history of this symbol:
During the year of 1862 public demand for an ice skating area in Prospect
Park, Brooklyn, prompted officials to dam a swampy area in the south end of
Prospect Park for this activity. Improvised wooden sheds were constructed
and wooden planks were installed leading to the skating area from these
sheds.
A city official who was inspecting the area, suggested that a means be
instituted to inform the public when the ice skating area was suitable for
use.
In the north end of the park, surveyors were laying out the area for
future development, and in this area a large hill was situated with a large
wooden pole at the peak. The equipment which the surveyors were using
included some large red discs. These discs were attached to the top of the
pole at the peak of the hill so as to permit observance from distant areas.
The "Red Ball" has been a symbol of ice skating in the park.

JIMMY HINES MASS: FRIDAY
A Solemn Requiem Mass for James J. "Jimmy" HINES, 80,
one of the last of the oldtime Democratic ward bosses and
political kingmakers, will be offered Friday at 10 a.m., at St.
Ignatius Martyr Church in Long Beach, L.I.
Mr. HINES, who defied Tammany Hall in 1932 to help
Franklin D. Roosevelt gain the Democratic Presidential
nomination over Tammany's own Alfred E. Smith, died
yesterday in Long Beach Memorial Hospital of a kidney
ailment.
He had been living in relative obscurity in Long Beach since
his parole from Sing Sing Prison in 1944.
ONLY ONE MOLD
Mr. HINES was cast in a political mold that has all but disappeared.
He never was more than a Tammany district leader--the equivalent
of the old-time ward boss.
But he operated on the give-and-take level of local politics. From
him the needy--and politically deserving--citizens of his district got
food baskets, Thanksgiving Turkeys, jobs, boat rides, picnics. His
home always was open to favor-seekers.
In return, Mr. HINES demanded and got a bloc of Democratic votes
that was the unswerving in loyalty to him. With these he exercised
behind-the-scenes influence in misty political depths and became a
rich man.
HE HAD THE POWER
He controlled cops and judges. It was rumored that he could swing a
mayoralty election by importing thousands of bums and floaters to vote
his way.
By 1932 he was strong enough to default on Al Smith and give Roosevelt
a helping hand toward the White House.
Mr. HINES long had been intimate with prohibition era beer barons and
racketeers -- Owney MADDEN, Larry FAY, Dutch SCHULT's multi-million
dollar numbers racket, but it was not until 1938 that the then relatively
unknown Dewey had him arrested.
On Feb. 25, 1939, Mr. HINES was convicted on 13 counts of partnership
in the assassinated SCHULT'z (sic) gambling syndicate. He was
sentenced to four to eight years in prison. He was paroled after serving
nearly four years.
He lived out his remaining years quietly. He died in an oxygen tent,
along, with no member of his family -- a wife and three sons -- at his
bedside.
