Brooklyn's Militia In Civil War Days.

Brooklyn, at the height of the Civil War in 1863 and just beginning 
to have difficulty with the draft, was the headquarters of the 
Second Division, New York State Militia, comprising 
Long Island, 
Westchester, 
Putnam, 
Rockland and Orange Counties.

The Eleventh Brigade was composed of the old 
Twenty-third, 
Forty-seventh,
Fifty-second and Fifty-sixth Regiments.

The colonels in charge of the regiments were:

WOODWARD, John B., Thirteenth
FOWLER, E. B., Fourteenth
BENNETT, Michael, Twenty-eighth Rifles
CROPSEY, William J., Seventieth Calvary
EVERDELL, William, Jr., Twenty-third
MESEROLE, Jeremiah V., Forty-seventh
COLE, M.W., Fifty-second Infantry
TALMADGE, Millard, Fifty-sixth Infantry.
