Two others were treated at home. The experiment resulted in an explosion that wrecked an apartment at 465 Chauncey St. The injured are: William Henry, 14, of 354 Chauncey St., cuts and bruises of the hands, severe cuts of the arms and crushed fingers of the right hand; Kings County Hospital. George SUNDERMEIER, 13, of 475 Chauncey St., powder burdens of the face and hands; Kings County. Grace GUIDO, 13, of 33 Granite St., cuts and bruises of the legs and hands; Kings County. Gregory GALLO, 13, of 90 Hopkins Ave., cuts of the right i.e., legs and almonds; Bushwick Hospital. To Others Slightly Hurt two other children, Evelyn REARDON, 13, of 253 Hull St., and Steve OWENS of 265 Chauncey St., were slightly injured, but did not require hospitalization. The blast occurred late yesterday in the apartment of Laura HULSERT. 80-year-old "grandma' to the neighborhood children, who often entertains the young people of the area. Miss HULSERT, who was in the apartment at the time of the explosion, suffered only shock. The six children came to visit Miss HULSERT yesterday about 530, one of them-police said it was the Henry boy-bringing two bottles containing chemicals and the number of empty gelatin capsules bought at a drugstore. Making ' Atom Bombs ' They sat on the living room floor, Miss HULSERT said, and once she asked what they were doing. Young Henry, she said, told that they were going to "make atom bombs." Suddenly the apartment was rocked by an explosion which through the children across the floor, blew out both front windows and brought neighbors into the street. A neighbor turned in a fire alarm but there was no fire. Firemen gave first aid to the injured children until police and ambulances arrived. Seek Cause of Blast As young enemy was still unconscious this morning police said they were unable to learn what chemicals had been in the bottles. None of the other children knew. One child said the explosion came as the contents of the two bottles had been mixed and the mixture was about to be placed in the capsules. Henry's mother told police she felt sure one of the other boys had the chemicals. A son, she said, never had shown any interest in chemicals and there was no chemicals set in their home. Doctors at Kings County hospital said it appeared four fingers of Henry's right hand will have to be amputated but the arm has been saved. Juveniles ' A-Bomb' Experiment Mains Borough Boy for Life A maimed right hand is the memento of a juvenile "atom bomb” experiment which one Brooklyn boy will carry through life. He is William Henry, 14, of 354 Chauncey Street who is still in a critical condition in Kings County Hospital. Henry was one of six children hurt Sunday night when some unknown chemicals they were mixing in the apartment of Laura HULSERT, 80, of 465 Chauncey Street demonstrated their potency in an explosion which hurled them across the room and blew out the windows. At the hospital physicians amputated four fingers of the boys crushed right ha nd but said they expected to save the rest of the arm, which was badly burned. The other youthful chemists were less seriously injured. George SUNDERMEIER, 13, of 475 Chauncey Street in Kings A hospital, and Gregory GALLO, 13, of 90 Hopkinson Ave., in Bushwick Hospital are being treated for burns and cuts on faces, arms and legs. Grace GUIDO, 13 of 33 Granite Street, who suffered bruises on her arms and legs has been discharged from the hospital. And Steve OWENS, 13, of 465 Chauncey St., and Evelyn RARDON, 13, of 253 Hull St., have recovered sufficiently to return to their classes at Junior High School 73. The collection to buy flowers and fruit for the children still hospitalized is being made a model their Bushwick neighbors by Robert THOROT, 15 a schoolmate and Mrs. Kitty DIGAGINNATO.
