Macedonia A.M.E. Church
 37-22 Union Street
Flushing, New York 11355
718-353-5870
Except from their website:
"In the year 1811, the records show that the land for the original site
for the Macedonia Church was purchased by the Trustees and members of the
African Methodist Society of Flushing, the forerunner of the present
Macedonia African American Episcopal Church. Because of a fire in the
earlier church, this is the most accurate date that we can attest to,
but we believe that the Church was formed many years earlier by free blacks,
Indians and whites, who could have also been ex-slaves.

Queens, as late as 1790, just twenty-one years before the founding of the
Society, had a population of approximately eight hundred free blacks and
over two thousand slaves that resided along with whites in the various
communities, including Flushing that comprised the County. Needless to say,
the free men of color lived in dangerous times. They were at the mercy of
whites who could without fear of prosecution, capture any black and return
them to slavery. However, in the face of this daily threat their courage,
until slavery was abolished in New York in 1841 and then throughout the
nation in 1863 is unmatched..."
