Church 37-22 Union Street Flushing, New York 11355 718-353-5870 Except from their website: "In the year 1811, the records show that the land for the original site for the Macedonia Church was purchased by the Trustees and members of the African Methodist Society of Flushing, the forerunner of the present Macedonia African American Episcopal Church. Because of a fire in the earlier church, this is the most accurate date that we can attest to, but we believe that the Church was formed many years earlier by free blacks, Indians and whites, who could have also been ex-slaves. Queens, as late as 1790, just twenty-one years before the founding of the Society, had a population of approximately eight hundred free blacks and over two thousand slaves that resided along with whites in the various communities, including Flushing that comprised the County. Needless to say, the free men of color lived in dangerous times. They were at the mercy of whites who could without fear of prosecution, capture any black and return them to slavery.
