Superstition Defied
Midsummer Banquet of the 13 Club

Hotel Brighton
Tuesday, 14 August 1888

In groups of 13, headed by a band of 13 pieces the procession started,
though the long corrider & back eastward, then out on the piazza westward
an open doorway, and so onto the dining hall.
In seating of 13. Two wine cards were at each seating, one an old
fashioned tombstone, with the motto: "Morituri te Salutamus"..
(About to die, we salute you) and at the bottom a scull & crossbones.
The coffin card was more elaborate.."The 13 Club, "Jacet Hic!"  
"But which you have used your breath; there is no drinking after death"
The centerpiece was an urn shaped fabric, with "XIII" on the side and 
surmounted with grapes.
Among those participating were 13 of the founders of the club, only one 
whom had died in 1887.
The club was called to order by Judge David McADAM, it's chief ruler,
father of 13 children
