Lutheran church records NY Contributor : Judi I was just able to pull out a letter I received in 1993 It stated (please remember this was prior to the merging of the LCA and Evangelical) "Below are given two othe possible sources of information about congregations and pastors of the New York area: I Information about churches of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod can be obtained from: Archivist, The Atlantic District Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, 171 White Plains Road, Bronxville, NY, 18708 II Information about German Evangelical Churches that many German Lutheran immigrants attended near their homes, can be obtained from: Evangelical and Reformed Church Archives 555 West James Street Lancaster, PA 17603" This letter came as a reply to a letter I wrote to "The Lutheran Arcives, Horrmann Library, Wagner Colleg, Staten Island, NY 10301 (718) 390-3100 and the Metropolitan New York Synod-ELCA 390 Park Ave, South New York, New York 10016 212-532-6350 It took me several letters to different locations to get any real answers. The churches that still exist still have their old records but churches that are closed have their records at the archives.

This might be of help : http://www.aal.org/LutheransOnline/Gene_Ex/ According to "The German Churches of Metropolitan NY" by Richard Haberstroh, published by the NYG&B: Gustav Sommer was a pastor at St. Matthew, a Lutheran Church. It was established in 1864 at N 5th n. (near) Driggs Ave in Brooklyn. It was closed after 1940. The records are at AELCA which is: Archives of the ELCA, Metropolitan NY Synod, Wagner College Library, 631 Howard AVe, Staten Island , NY 10301
