NATIONAL SOCIETY COLONIAL DAUGHTERS OF THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY
1896 The National Society, Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century was formed in Brooklyn in 1896 and later chartered by the State of New York. The Founder and First President of the Society was Mrs. Harlan P. Halsey. Other persons who acted as Incorporators of the Society were Sarah M. Higgins, Isabella N. Talmage, Bertha H. Reed, Jennie B. Davol, Mary Alden White, and Rena I. Halsey. The Society maintains scholarships at Lincoln Memorial University; presents awards to honor graduates at military academies; maintains an historical display at the Zwaanendael Museum in Lewes, Delaware; supports the Orange Orthopaedic Hospital in New Jersey; has restored important papers at the Swem Library of William and Mary College, and has established a Rare Book Fund at the college for the purpose of replacing the books burned in the library in 1705; has published eight lineage books; and has presented a lectern purchased in Great Britain, patterned after the original, to the old Jamestowne Church. At the present time, the Society has twenty-one chapters. O B J E C T I V E S The objectives of this Society are patriotic, educational, Philanthropic and historical. To preserve the memory of the Founders of this nation. To commemorate historical incidents of the Colonial period. To collect and preserve Colonial relics and documents. To erect tablets at places of historic interest relating to the Colonial period. M E M B E R S H I P R E Q U I R E M E N T S Any woman of good moral character and reputation, past the age of eighteen years, lineally descended from an ancestor who rendered service from 1607 to 1699 inclusive, according to the eligibility list as given in the national by-laws, may be considered a candidate for membership in the Society. Membership in the Society is by invitation. An applicant for membership may join the Society either through a chapter or as a member-at-large. Address Mrs. Isaac D.
