Nassau County Vitals
Death records The collection of Vital Records begin in 1881, and are required to be kept by the city or town, in which the event (birth, death, marriage) occurred and by the state (Albany). There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County and 10 towns in Suffolk County. REMEMBER: It is very important to know in which city or town the event took place. The city or town could be different from the city or town where the individual may have resided. On and after January 1, 1899, the eastern two-thirds of Queens County became Nassau County, and at that time included 3 Towns: North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay. In 1910, Glen Cove incorporated as a city and was made independent of the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1922, the Village of Long Beach (incorporated in 1918) was incorporated as a city and made independent of the Town of Hempstead.
