LONG ISLAND INFORMATION PAGE

Brooklyn was part of Long Island in the beginnings of our history. Queens did not exist until very late 1800s. It became part of New York in 1898. When searching Long Island remember to include the entire island. For those searching eastern Long Island remember to check Connecticut for very early records. "In 1644 Southampton came under the jurisdiction of the Connecticut Colony, and in 1648 Southold did likewise, but East Hampton remained self-governed until 1657. For this reason Hartford was an active partner in certain legal issues." From "Collections of the New-York Historical Society for the year 1869" There is a lot more info related to Long Island through Newspapers on the main page of BROOKLYN Info Pages
