Grey, Philip P.,
453 49th St., Bklyn.
Pvt.Co.B. 102d F. Sig. Bn.
Died of wounds, September 25, 1918.
Horseshoer Philip P. Grey, 24
years old, who lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Grey, at 453
Forty ninth street, and who died of wounds Sept. 25. The official telegram
which was received last Thursday was withheld from the father, who was
critically ill, for a few days. When it was thought he had passed all
danger, another son, Sergt. Frank Grey, himself badly gassed at Chateau
Thierry and who is now stationed at Camp Devens giving bayonet instructions
broke the sad news to him the latter part of last week. The elder Grey
suffered a relapse from the shock and died on Saturday.
According to a letter received recently by the sergeant from a pal of "Phil"
the latter met death after displaying unusual bravery. The missive stated
that on Sept. 19, while the battalion was under fire, a messenger was sent
from the front of the line to the rear with an important message. He was
killed before he got far on his way. Bullets were flying thick and shells
were bursting all about when the commanding officer asked some one to
volunteer to deliver the message. Although not part of his job, since he
was a horseshoer, Philip volunteered as courier. He got the communication
to its destination and was on his way back to the front lines when he was
wounded by a bursting shell.
He was a member of Company B, 102d Field Battalion Signal Corps. He
enlisted June 2, 1917, and left for overseas on May 6. He was a graduate of
St. Michael's Parochial School. His brother Sergt. Frank Grey, was a
policeman attached to the Hamilton avenue station before he joined the colors.
In the midst of the sorrows last night, Mrs. Grey said: "It is a great
comfort to me that I could raise two good sons to fight for the flag and I
wish I had more to send over and whip the Kaiser."

Field Artillery, Battery D. He remained a member of that outfit and went to
France with it. But one letter has been received from him since he left for
overseas. He wrote everything was fine and that he expected to be home
soon. The War Department reports him killed in action Sept. 26. He was a
