LIEUT. MACHESKI DIED FOR COUNTRY
Had Brooklyn Soldier Lived He Would Have Inherited Polish Estate & Title
"I know of no better way to die than to give my life for my country. If
I should fall, do not make any attempt to recover my body. Let me be
buried in the soil that I fought on for world democracy." This was the
proud, patriotic utterance of Lieut. William J. MACHESKI, of 177 Woodruff
avenue, Flatbush, when, after gaining a commission at the Plattsburg
camp, he left for France. He was killed in action October 15.
Had he lived until the final peace arrangements, with its restoration of
Poland, Lieut. MACHESKI would have become a Polish Count. He owned
a large tract of land there and the title going with it.
Lieut MACHESKI was born in Virginia and came North when a youth.
He married Evelyn McELROY eight years ago. He was in France when
the world war commenced and upon his return was very eager to get into
the conflict. When this country entered the conflict, he went to the
Plattsburg camp and received his commission.
On Aug. 11 he was gassed and slightly wounded but did not mention the
fact to his wife and little daughter, Eve. In his letters, instead,
he told of charging with the men of the 128th Infantry over
No Man's Land and, seeing a lone pansy growing in the otherwise barren
stretch, stooped down, plucked it and then fell wounded. He sent
the flower to his little child as a token. Mrs. MACHESKI heard
from friends of her husband's wounds and wrote to him. On Oct. 15,
the day he was reported as having been killed, she received the last
letter saying he was well and happy.
Lieut MACHESKI was 30 years old and was formerly employed by the
American Company. He was a member of the Plaza and Lambs' clubs.

Mr. Meyer received word that his son had been fatally wounded in action and

born in the old farmhouse where the family has lived for many years. His
grandfather was known as "Strawberry" Meyer, because he sold strawberries in
small baskets. Young Meyer was drafted in September, 1917, and went with
his regiment as a company cook. Later, at his own request, he was
transferred to the firing line.
His name has not appeared as yet on the official list.
Private Henry Randolph Meyer, aged 26 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry R.

Just what regiment Meyer belonged to could not be learned. A relative said
that the young many who was drafted in Sept. 1917 and went across in January
was at first assigned as a company cook and later at his own request was
placed in the fighting lines. Last August the family received word from
France that Henry was fatally wounded in action wand was understood to be in
a hospital. A query was then sent to Washington and last Monday a War
Department telegram came announcing that the young soldier had been killed
in action five months ago.
