SAW BROTHER DIE ON BATTLEFIELD
107 on Day's Casualties - 61 Fatalities, Mostly Among Members of 106th.
"I saw him fall. He was game to the core and died as a PORTER should die."
is the way Corporal Albert E. PORTER of Headquarters Company, 106th
Infantry, wrote to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. PORTER, of 593
Brooklyn avenue, Flatbush, and related how his brother, Corporal William J.
PORTER, 25 years old, who was in the same company, made the supreme
sacrifice before his eyes.
Corporal PORTER was killed Sept. 27. His brother said that, when he saw
William killed, he saw red and was almost crazed. He later recovered the
body and buried it. In a letter dated Oct. 18 he told of the American advance
troops finding aged men and women bayonetted. "God help the Germans when
we catch up to them to-morrow," he wrote. When the Germans fired in the
hidden tunnel the concussion was so great that it tore the rifle from his
hand, the Flatbush youth recounted in a most interesting letter.
Corporal William PORTER was born in Portsmouth, England, and came to
this country when about 12 years old. He was employed as paymaster by
the Degnon Construction Company when he enlisted in the Fourteenth Regiment
when American entered the war. His brother, Albert, 22 years old, enlisted at
the same time, and another brother, Arthur E., became a chief yeoman in the
Naval Reserve. Corporal PORTER was well known in the Lenox Road Baptist
Church, where he played on the basketball team and was also a member
of Central Branch Y.M.C.A.
The father is employed by the British Government in a storage plant in Tuckahoe,N. J.
