SALLER DEAD FROM WOUNDS News of the death of Corporal William SALLER was received to-day by his sister, Mrs. Joseph REIDE, of Sutter avenue, Middle Village, in a depatch from the War Department, which stated that SALLER died of wounds received in action, June 22. His name is in to-daay's casualty list. Corporal SALLER had been in the army about eight months, as a member of Company M, Seventh Infantry, and sailed for France early this year. He was twenty-eight years old, and before joining the colors had followed the trade of his deceased father, who was well known throughout Queens as a maarble cutter and polisher. Scanlon, Horace B., Bklyn, 2nd Lt.,Co. K, 106th Inf. Killed in action,September 27, 1918. Lieut. Horace B. Scanlan. That a mistake was made by the War Department in reporting the death of Lieut. Horace B. Scanlan, of Company K, 106th Infantry, supposed to have died on Sept. 3 from wounds received in action, is the firm belief of his relatives. His father, John Scanlan, of 347 Gates avenue, has received four letters from the young officer dated later than the day on which he was supposed to have died. These communications were written Sept. 4, 6, 11 and 15th. In the last letter the lieutenant said he had been gassed, but had fully recovered and was once more on the firing line with his company. SCHENCK is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. SCHENCK, who have received no official word that their son is dead, and who cling to the hope the he is still alive. SCHEULEN, of 1255 Sterling place, born in Brooklyn, a graduate of P.S. 85 and of Commercial High School, was an employe of the Title Guarantee and Trust Company when he was called to the colors a little more than a year ago. He married, said good-by soon afterward to his young wife and sailed away with Company L, 315th Infantry. Two months ago a son was born to him and the glad tidings was hastened to France. The word never reached him, for he was killed in action while the letter was en route. Besides his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. SCHEULEN, survive him. Private Samuel SCHLESS, of 234 Pulaski street, son of Peter SCHLESS, wrote to his father Sept. 1 saying that if the Huns kept up the rate at which they were running the American boys would be in Berlin by Thanksgiving and home by Christmas. The War Department telegram says SCHLESS was killed in action between Sept. 27 and 30. He was a member of the 105th Machine Gun Battalion. Before entering army service he was employed as a clerk for the Standard Oil Company. Brooklyn Standard Union-1 December 1918 Private Samuel SCHLESS, of 234 Pulaski street, reported killed in action between Sept. 27 and 30, was a member of Company D, 318th Infantry. He was a son of Louis SCHLESS and lived with his father and sister at that address. His mother has been dead several years. Prior to his entering the service he was employed in a shoe factory. Killed in action, October 17, 1918. Sergt. Louis T. SCHOLL, Jr., aged 26, of 132 Weldon street, died of wounds, was a member of the 106th Infantry. He enlisted in the Twenty-third Regiment seven years ago and served on the Mexican border. He went to France in May. His mother died from pneumonia two days after he was killed. In a letter written on Oct. 6, Sergt. SCHOLL said he had been wounded by shrapnel and had been over the top five times. Three brothers and one foster-brother are in the service. Funeral services at his late residence, 185 Foxall st., on Friday at 8 p.m. Adolf SCHWAB, connected with the Medical Corps, U. S. A., died suddenly on Tuesday at Fort Slo????, N. Y. He was born in Brooklyn twenty-one years ago and was a member of the Foxall Benevolent Society. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Lillian and Etta, and a brother, Charles. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 8 p.m. at his late home. Interment on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery under direction of Charles C. MAY's Sons. Died of pneumonia at Civil Hosp., Peekskill, N.Y.,October 15, 1918. Dr. Robert H. SCOTT, lieutenant in the Naval Reserves and master of Acanthus Lodge, 719, F. and A. M., died yesterday after an illness of a few days of pneumonia at Peekskill, where he had been transferred from Bridgeport in his official capacity. He was 34 years old and a son of Dr. Peter SCOTT, of 126 New York avenue. Besides his father he is survived by his widow, Florence, and an uncle, Homer L. BARTLETT, of 785 Monroe street. He was born in Scotland and came to the United States when eight months old. He attended the Polytechnic Institute, Amherst College and was a graduate of Long Island College Hospital. After taking his medical degree he was attached to the Brooklyn Hospital and later joined the Naval Reserves. He also was a member of Clan McDonald, the Municipal Club and the Lewis Avenue Congregational Church. Funeral services will be held tonight at his late residence, 128 Reid avenue. PRIVATE JOHN SCUDERO GIVEN MILITARY BURIAL A mass of requiem for the repose of the soul of Private John SCUDERO, of the Twenty-fifth Engineers, A. E. F., in France, will be celebrated at 10 A.M. Thursday in St. Matthew's R. C. Church, Eastern parkway and Utica avenue. Private SCUDERO was killed in action, Oct. In a letter to his father, N. A. SCUDERO, of 263 Schenectady avenue, Lieut William H. MUSTON, chaplain of his regiment, wrote that Private SCUDERO was hit by shrapnel and died as he was being taken in an ambulance to a first aid hospital. The chaplain took charge of his burial with military honors, and took his effects, including a ring, a new testament and some letter, which will be returned to his family. Officially reported to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Shefrin, of 210 Seventeenth street, as being killed in action Sept. 5 word has been received in Brooklyn that Cook William Shefrin who was attached to Company C, 306th Infantry has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action. His parents however have not been apprised by the Government of the valor their son. Whether he performed the heroism in the battle in which he fell they are unable to say. However, in a letter to them dated a few days before he was killed, the soldier told briefly of being wounded while going to the assistance of comrades who were wounded. In performing this act, he wrote, a piece of shrapnel struck him in the head and face. Shepard was the son of the late Frederick Shepard, of Potsdam, N.Y. He was born in St. Lawrence County and was a graduate of the Albany Law School. Entering the second officers training camp at Plattsburg, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was assigned to the Headquarters Company, 316th Infantry at Camp Meade, MO., where he remained seven months. Last July he went to France. Before entering the army he was a lawyer, a member of the firm of Jones, McKinney, and Steinbrink, 189 Montague street. While on furlough last fall he returned home and was married on Thanksgiving Day to Miss Lillian Wilson, who now lives at 213 Jefferson avenue by the Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, of whose church, Central Congregational, he was a member. Aside from the mere announcement of his death, no details were received by Mrs. Shepard. Information has been received by the family in Sayville that the lieutenant died Nov. 2 from meningitis following an attack of influenza. Lieut SMITH, who was 37 years old, was a fighting observer in the aviation service. He was badly injured in a fall last summer, but recovered and went back to duty. He was formerly a lieutenant in the Fourth New Jersey and saw service at the border with that organization. Two brothers are in the navy. SOLOVEI, of the Second Labor Battalion, died from bronchial trouble upon landing in France on Oct. 15. Lieut SOLOVEI won his commission in November 1917, and was assigned to Camp Steward, Newport News. He made several trip to France, as a surgeon on a transport. He left his country on his last voyage Oct. 1. Lieut. SOLOVEI was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Public School 8 and Boys' High School. He won a scholarship in Cornell University. In May 1917, the late lieutenant graduated with honors from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He served as an interne at Bellevue Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital and the Montefiore Home for Tubercular Cures. The dead officer had made his home with his parents, Jacob and Rachel SOLOVEI; his brother, the Assistant Corporation Counsel, and his sister, Sarah SOLOVEI, at 69 Thatford avenue. Another surviving sister is Mrs. Ann B. HEMLEY, wife of Dr. William HEMLEY. Arrangements have been completed to bring the body back to this country where it will be buried with military honors. On to-day's list only two are reported killed in action, while seventeen died of wounds and seven of disease. He had lived in Woodhaven with his parents for nine years. Before being drafted he was employed in the signal department of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Hunt Stevens of 884 Argyle road has made the supreme sacrifice in action. In a letter to his mother the captain of Lieut. Stevens' company says he was killed Oct. 3. Lieut. Stevens was born thirty one years ago at Rutherford, N.J. and had lived a long time in Brooklyn. Lieut. Stevens was educated at Erasmus Hall and went to the first Officer's Training Camp at Plattsburg in April, 1917. He went to France in September, 1917 with the first contingent from Plattsburg, as a member of the Fifth Machine Gun Battalion, Company B. His brother, Edgar, is a lieutenant in the air service and is now training at Kelly field. In addition to parents and brother two sisters survive him. STEVENS, 31 years old, of 884 Argyle road, Flatbush, died of wounds received in action, Oct. 3, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas H. STEVENS. He was attached to the Fifth Machine Gun Battalion, Company H, and received his commission as a second lieutenant at the first Plattsburg camp. He went to France in September 1917. He was born in Rutherford, N. J., was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School and the Western representative of the Trenton Potteries prior to enlistment. Mr. Anna STORCH, of 50 Duffield street, is not certain whether the Private William B. STORCH, reported died of wounds, is her son, Sergeant William V. STORCH. The telegram had the correct address but the rank and middle initial of the name are wrong. Mrs. STORCH will have the matter further investigated through the American Red Cross. Sergt. STORCH wrote home, Sept. 20, saying he was again moving up front and that the boys did not know and did care where they were going. He died of wounds a week later, according to the official report. The mother said: "It is for a good cause, but of course none of us likes to see it. William always wanted to be a soldier. He enlisted with the Fourteenth Regiment when he was seventeen years old, giving a wrong age. He was transferred to the Twenty-third Regiment, went to the Mexican border, and returned a sergeant." He was born in Manhattan twenty-one years ago, but had been a resident of Brooklyn fifteen years and of West New York, N. J., the past six years,living at 595 Bergenline avenue. He was formerly a pupil of P.S. No. 10 and is survived by three brothers, William, Leo and Charles, and two sisters, Josephine and Mrs. W. SMITH. The funeral was held yesterday with a requiem mass at St. Joseph's R. C. Church, of the Palisades, at 9 a.m. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery. Brooklyn Standard Union-5 October 1918 William H. SWARSBRICK, son of Emily and the late William H. SWARSBRICK, died yesterday at his home, 293 Stagg street. He was born in Brooklyn, served three years in the regular army, being discharged as a corporal in the Sixth Field Artillery in Texas in 1915. When the United States entered the war he re-enlisted. While his unit was stationed at Camp Mills five months ago he was stricken with pneumonia. He gradually sank until the end came yesterday. In addition to his mother he is survived by four brothers, Thomas, who is in military service; Robert, Walter and John, and two sisters, Emily and Ethel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Miller, of South Third Street. M.E. Church, officiating. Interment at Lutheran Cemetery.
