BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE ..NEWS
1855 16 March 1855 Married: Hawkshurst-Day Frederick Hawkshurst to L. Tivola Day, both of Brooklyn. 1869 23 October 1869 MARRIED. KFILHOLZ - BRESSETT -On Wednesday, October 20th, at South Berne, N.Y., by the Rev. Mr. THORN, Charles C. KFILHOLZ, of Brooklyn to Maggie W. BRESSETT, on the South BERNE, N.Y. NASH - FOSTER - On Wednesday, October 20th, at the State street Congregational Church, by the Pastor, Rev. M.P. GADDIS, Edward NASH, Esq., and Ms. Julia E. FOSTER, all of Brooklyn. POLICE INTELLIGENCE. A Profound Verdict - Yesterday afternoon, Claus WEISCHEN, a Teutonic saloon-keeper, who had previously been arraigned before Justice LYNCH for an alleged violation of the Excise Law, by keeping his saloon open after twelve o'clock, mid-night, when he plead "not guilty," and demanded a trial by jury, duly appeared in Court before and august body of six good and lawful men. The evidence elicited showed that the saloon was open twenty minutes past the prescribed hour, but Claus pleaded that on the night in question his customers had refused to leave the saloon at twelve o'clock, and had thus compelled to violation of the law. The six good and lawful men, after dignified deliberation rendered a verdict, that, notwithstanding the fact that the saloon was open at the time alleged, the accused, having been unable to disburse his customers, was entitled to a verdict of "not guilty" which was duly recorded. Disappointed. - Yesterday afternoon Detective FOLK of Police Headquarters, espied two gorgeously attired women, whom he recognized as belonging to the light-fingered sister-hood, passing through Johnson street, He followed the suspicious duo, who turned into Fulton street, and occupied themselves in gazing into shop windows, placing themselves in unwarrantable contiguity to ladies and gentlemen there standing. Having satisfied himself that the two females were on an expedition, the detective quietly took them into custody, and escorted them to the Station, where they gave the names, ages, and occupations, Mary CASSIDY, 27 housekeeper, and Emma JOHNSON, 25 milliner. No stolen goods being found in their possession they were allowed to depart after due warning. Illegal Hack Ablutions. -Benjamin DAVIS, a hackman, was arrested by P. REILLY, of the forty-eighth Precinct, yesterday for violating a city ordinance in washing his hack at a public hydrant, and Justice DELMAR find him $10. An Operation In Wheat. - Michael A. MULCUM, a steersman on the canal boat "Fred Hawkins," was taken before Police Justice Walsh, by the Atlantic Dock Police, this morning, and convicted of having been caught in the act of stealing for bags of wheat, of the value of twenty dollars, from the cargo of the boat. Michael declared that he was simply moving the grain to a place of safety, in consequence of a leak in the boat. But he failed to prove that the boat was leaking except through the hatchway, and he was, therefore, sentenced to pay a five of twenty-?ue dollars, or sojourn for thirty days and the County Penitentiary. A Useful Tool - The forty-third Sub-Precinct surrounded one last night. It was William TOOL, whose trunk as a fool, who was placed in a cell until he should cool, for what with hot gins and warm whiskeys and such palate-tickling but stomach-teazing potions he was found in the cold and of night with exceedingly "hot-coppers" but coppers, though bringing him in door once will scarcely bring him out. But great will be his dolor when he's multched of many a dollar, or taken by the collar to the cold and cheerless jail, and his children they will "beller” and his gentle spouse will wail, when the office they follow and repeat their piteous tale. Oh, alas, that such a father should prove himself so frail. Human Flag-Stones. - Patrict HENRY, age forty, and John DELANEY, age fifty, two veteran flaggers. having imbibed too much "stone-fence," yesterday, were discovered by Officer Robert BOYLE of the Forty-third Precinct, themselves personating flag-stones, in Hicks street, and Justice DELMAR gave them five days each to continue the hallucination, and compare durability with the flag-stones of the Jail. A Judge Brought To Judgment. - Margate JUDGE was this morning before Justice DELMAR on complaint of Alice TRACY, who accused this jewel of a woman of using language most derogatory to the matronly inmaculateness and the legality of a tender offspring, which caused the trust indignation of the amiable Alice to boil over again spends unjust JUDGE, and in order that the matter might be properly adjudged between them, Policeman Edward REILLY, of the forty-third Precinct was requested to trace Margaret to the haunts and bring her fourth to shine before Justice DELMAR, and prove a charge, or suffer the penalty of an outraged ordinance. She came. She failed to substantiate her base allegations and was accordingly charged by the judicious J.P. to give bonds in $250 to preserve a pacific state and cessation of hostilities for the period of six months toward sweet Alice. Margaret now thinks her conduct ill judged. She stated she was before a JUDGE before and hope she'd never be again. So mote it be. A We think Woodchopper - Frederich HOFFMANN, a Teutonic wheel-wright being in need of the proper curve for the fabrication of the wheel, was casting his eyes about for material to meet his requirements, when his gaze encountered a defunct tree standing forninst(?) the Orphan Asylum on Congress street presided over by Father RILEY, and he said in the words of scripture, "Why cumbereth if the ground," for lo, this is what I need and it is of no use to man, for its branches bring forth no verdure, neither does from emanate from its boughs, nor cooling shade, and he laid the keen ax and the sharp-intended saw at its roots, until it tottered and fell, and stretched its lordly length supine upon the earth. And in like manner fared sundry of its late companions, to whom life was no longer, nor had been for many a day. Now, unknown to Frederick the hewer, this action seemingly innocent, was in violation of a certain statute made and provided which forbids a leveling of many-branched trees without the commission of the city fathers, and Officer CAMPBELL, but the Forty-third Precinct who beheld the destruction of the last other leafless monarchs, laid hands upon the trembling Teuton and brought him to Court. But Frederick pleaded innocency of evil intent and wept, and attend the heart of the Justice melted and though perforce finding Fred guilty he bade him depart in peace and sin no more, while the sentence should remain in suspense as a reminder. 1870 12 October 1870 Marriage VREDENBURGH--FIELD In this city, on Tuesday, October 11, 1870, by the Rev.
